Volume 2, Number 17
Hello Friends! I hope all of you had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend. The weather was just remarkable! I did some mowing, took the boys fishing on Saturday night, cooked out on Sunday afternoon, took the family with me to do our radio show, and helped our son, Brent, with his horse. A pretty full weekend!
Better Horses Network is here! The radio show made the change several weeks ago; and shortly, you should be receiving your fall issue of Better Horses Network. We made the decision in June to make Sept.1 the deadline to make the change. The name change better fits the direction our company is going. You will be hearing more from Purina about the statement, “Better Animals”. Purina’s registered statement is “Animals Make Better People and We Make Better Animals." Also you will see on ads, “Horses Make Better People-We Make Better Horses! Thus with all of this, it made sense to change to Better Horses Network!
New Websites! Our website address has changed to www.betterhorsesnetwork.com . The next couple of weeks we will be getting the kinks out of it, but it should be running this week. A new separate website and a link from our home site is www.betterhorsesradio.com. The radio site will also link from www.purinamills.com horse page and www.barrelhorseworld.com. On our radio site, you will be able to listen to a particular show from our archive of shows along with linking up with our sponsors. Also on our betterhorses network site we have added some new features along with a new look. Along with keeping you up on current events, the new site will have pages for the calendar, our Dream Ride In The Flint Hills, link to Old West Cowboy Days, articles from the current publication, Regional Influentials, along with more information! Thanks to my team mate, Sally Dwyer, and Kim Beers from Midnight Productions for making this happen.
We had a great time on our Aug.28-29th Horse Research Trip to Longview Farms in Gray Summit. We had approximately 60 folks attend this trip getting the opportunity to see what differentiates Purina from all of the other competition. Research makes the difference!
Tune in to MONDAY NIGHT LIVE a Nutritional Educational Series Talk Show on Monday, Sept.18th, at 7:00 CST. This is the first of a series of three shows that you can actually call in your questions. The first one deals with horses with the second dealing with cattle nutrition and the third, deer management. “Animals Make Better People, We Make Better Animals." (See calendar section below for more details)
HORSE HEALTH FAIRS ARE COMING! Go to www.purinamills.com then click on Horse Health Fair logo on lower part of page and find the Horse Health Fair nearest to you.
Anything we can do to help take your “Horse Experience To A Higher Level” is our goal. By bringing Better Horses Network to you, I believe it can keep us on that direction. Let me know if I can be of help.
Until next time, take care!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Family Member
Do you think of your horse as a member of your family? You are not alone. Horses bring out the nurturer in many of us. We hug on them, bathe and brush them, give them treats, and bundle them up when it’s cold. In fact, we want to think that our horses love us, trust us, and would never hurt us. But the truth is . . . he out weighs us by 1,000 pounds and can hurt or kill us with a single kick.
Sometimes we lose sight of that danger and of a fundamental fact: he is a horse. He’s wired to behave and react like a horse, not a human. He is programmed to operate on the basis that survival sometimes means a retreat from predators. The spook-and-run behavior is an equine response to danger. You can learn to ride through it, to gain control, but you will never eliminate it completely.
So love him, take care of him and keep him comfortable, but don’t forget he can and will desert you if he perceives a danger that could put him in harms way.
