Volume 2, Number 21

Hello, Friends!

I hope all is well with all of you.  We have been busy with our Horse Health Fairs this fall where it has been good to see several of you.   If any of you are around the Paola, Kansas this Wednesday night, Nov.8, make sure you come out that evening to the Double W Ranch on 29975 Indianapolis Rd.  The Wiseman’s are great folks and look forward to seeing their new facility. We had a slight change where we cancelled having a Horse Health Fair in LaCygne on Thursday night and combined it with our Horse Health Fair at the Wiseman’s on Wednesday night. Information is in this newsletter.

This past Saturday and Sunday I spent a few hours cooking brisket for a couple of neat events coming up.  You won’t want to miss the Open House out at the Wilhite and Frees Equine Hospital on Saturday, Nov.18th. Located in Belton, Missouri it will be a great asset to the Equine Community. To find out more about the Open House you can contact Liz Goede at wilhiteandfreesequine@comcast.net .   Also while you are marking down dates in your calendar, make sure you mark Saturday, December 16 to attend the Open House for the Swimming Hole, an Equine Aquatred Therapy facility just built at the Brad Lund Quarter Horses Facility near LaCygne, KS.  Look for more information to come about this event on the electronic newsletter along with our next publication.

Along with our Horse Health Fairs this and next week, our deadline is coming up for the Winter Edition of the Better Horses Network, I am still planning on heading down to the Flying W Ranch for three days and two nights to drive 30 head of Longhorns across the Flint Hills. The long-range weather forecast, above temperatures during the day and night-YES!

Just a reminder -- our deadline for advertising in the Better Horses Winter Edition is Nov.13th.  If you are interested in advertising, give Connie a call at 785/242-8555.  If we can be of help, don’t hesitate to give me a call.  I will be getting back in touch with you in a couple of weeks.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Pattern Perfect
By Stephanie McAlexander

Showing horses can be exciting and frustrating at the same time; especially the pattern classes like showmanship, horsemanship, and equitation. These classes require precision, cadence, and flow to achieve the look of seamless interaction between horse and rider.

Most patterns are a combination of transitions usually called for at markers. To perfect these transitions one must practice patterns at least a couple of times a week. The challenge with this is to keep your horse fresh and not anticipating your transitions at the cones. Varying your routine by using other things in your arena can help. Lope to a fence post for example; or circle using a rock or a weed as your marker. Stop half way to a marker instead of at it. The important concept is that your horse responds when you cue him. To assure proper response to your cues, your horse must be moving in a collected or cadenced manner. Even in showmanship, where you are leading the horse, your transitions will be improved if your horse has forward motion.

Collection means that your horse is driving from his hindquarters and staying balanced in his shoulders. When the horse is collected, transitions become much easier for him to do. Envision trying to stop your own body running down hill versus running on flat ground. By combining these two elements, your patterns will flow from one maneuver to the next giving them that look of team interaction. When you have confidence in yourself and your horse, you can move through the patterns with ease!

Stephanie McAlexander has coached youth to the AQHA Youth World in showmanship, and to a hunter under saddle championship at the ABRA World Show. She has trained youth to the top ten at the Palomino World Show in showmanship, horsemanship equitation and hunter under saddle. She is training at Seven Oaks Ranch, Spring Hill, KS.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Easy Horse Cookies

1 cup grated carrots
1 apple grated
2 tblsps. corn oil
1/4 cup molasses
1 tsp. salt
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup flour

Preheat oven to 350o.  Lightly grease cookie sheet.  In a large bowl, mix carrots, apple, corn oil and molasses together.  Then fold in salt, oats and flour until well mixed.  Spread dough out in one big piece on the cookie sheet.  Score dough with a knife to make it easier to break apart after baking.  (Or you can roll dough out and cut shapes with cookie cutters.)  Bake for 20 minutes or until brown.  Let cool, break apart and serve.

A very special fall treat . . . for that very special horse of yours!
