Hello, Friends!

I realize the Thanksgiving Holidays are upon us, and things are probably getting a little hectic. I have just put a wrap on putting together my Winter Edition of the Better Horses Network publication that you should receive the first part of December. I had a great time this past weekend participating in the Wilhite & Frees Equine Hospital Open House in Peculiar, MO.  It was great to see so many folks turn out to see this wonderful facility. It is really going to play an important role in Equine Health in the Kansas City and surrounding areas.

After Thanksgiving, things really crank up with the United States Dressage Federation’s convention coming to Kansas City next week. Many of you will be traveling to Las Vegas to the National Finals Rodeo. If you get to the trade show at the Hilton Convention Center, make sure you stop by Purina’s America's Horse Country Exhibit and say hello.

Good Luck to those of you who will be competing at the National Reining Horse Assn.’s Futurity in Oklahoma City that begins this week. The NRHA Futurity is an outstanding event to attend and see some of the greatest young horses in the world. Because of my commitment to work the NFR, I won’t be there, but wish I could.

Make sure you mark Saturday, Dec.16th , on your calendar to attend Brad & Amy Lund’s Open House for their New Equine Aquatred Therapy facility. Information is in the calendar section.  This will be a great opportunity to learn about a new service offered in the area.

With the resignation of George Guastello, head of the American Royal, it should be interesting to see the direction the Royal will go. Personally, I hope that it goes back to the roots of what it really is and should be. With my memories of growing up around the American Royal, it was about families and folks going every year to see horses, cattle, cowboys and cowgirls, and GREAT RODEO.

I hope all of you have a wonderful Happy Thanksgiving Holiday. I am looking forward to traveling to Texas with my family to spend Thanksgiving with our son and daughter in-law and holding our granddaughter, Emma.
Let me know if I can be of any help.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Halters: There Is A Difference
By Sally Dwyer

If you are having trouble getting your horse to lead the way you would like him to: relaxed, knows his boundaries, doesn’t invade your space, lead you or try to choose the direction of travel . . .then you might think about changing your halter.

Leather and webbing halters are too wide and don’t allow the horse to “feel” the halter and the pressure you put on it. A rope halter, however, will get a horse’s attention better and demand lightness. Also the normal 6-foot lead is too short and gives very little room for error and is difficult to use to transfer signals to the horse. A 12-foot lead gives you more room to maneuver and control your horse. Fighting to control a horse on a short lead rope that is invading your space can be very dangerous, as he is way too close for safety.

This doesn’t mean you must always use the rope halter and longer lead, as once the horse has learned how to be responsive to your commands, you may only need to use it every so often to remind him that you are the leader in this relationship.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Thanksgiving Horse Muffins

1 whole apple, finely chopped
1/4 cup water
2 carrots, finely chopped
1/8 cup maple syrup or regular syrup
(if using regular syrup, use a little less)
1 cup cooking oats

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl (the mixture should be sticky but not very sticky)
Use a muffin or "cupcake" pan and grease it (flouring it is better for the horses) and put about 1½ spoons of the mixture in each compartment.  Spread evenly and pack down.  Bake for about 10 minutes at 425o.  Turn off oven and leave treats in oven.  Do not take treats out of the oven until the oven is completely cool or they will get mushy!

A special Thanksgiving treat . . . for that very special horse of yours!
