Volume 2, Number 23

Hello, Friends!

I apologize for our first December newsletter being late, but with my partner who helps me put this together, JoAnn Riggs, being hit with an ice storm in St. Louis and myself being in Las Vegas for a few days, it has been a little bit of challenge to say the least. I hope all is going well for all of you.

For the first part of December, I had the opportunity to go and work the Purina booth at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. This was my fourth year attending the National Finals, and it is quite the experience. I arrived in Las Vegas right before the foot of snow hit our area, but did not stay out there long enough to give the extreme cold a chance to leave. Although it was very cold, it was still nice to be back home.

By now, most of you have received your Winter Edition of our Better Horses Network Publication. I hope you will enjoy it. Thanks goes out to everyone who helped put the paper together. Don’t forget, beginning in 2007, if you want the paper delivered to your home there will be a $10.00/year charge. You can send your check to; Better Horses Network; P.O. Box 722; Ottawa, KS 66067. If you don’t want to pay for a subscription, you can pick up your free copy from participating Purina dealers or other distribution points.

This past weekend, I spent Saturday finishing up cooking brisket for the upcoming Open House at Lund Quarter Horses near LaCygne, KS. I hope that you can make it this Saturday, Dec.16th, to see the New Equine Aquatred Therapy Unit which the Lunds call “The Swimming Hole”. This is a tremendous asset to the area equine community. The Open House begins at Noon and goes to 5:00 pm. A complimentary barbeque lunch will be served from 1:00 til 3:00 pm. Lund Quarter Horses is located at 23180 Ullery Road, and you can contact Amy Lund if you have any questions at 913/515-4937. We hope to see you out there.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. We will probably send one more electronic newsletter before Christmas, but if for some reason the next letter comes after Dec.25th, I want to make sure to wish all of you a Merry Christmas.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Wintertime Workouts
By Stephanie McAlexander

As winter quickly bears down upon us, our initial reaction is to hibernate indoors and forget about working our horses. However, it is important to remember that our horse friends need consistent work to maintain what we have taught them. From groundwork to full workouts, we can find something to work on in most weather conditions
.
If the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, a day off is warranted, as it’s too cold to be safe for horse or human. If the temperature is above 20 degrees, but still too cold to ride, you can remind your horse of his ground manners. Make sure he is soft at the end of your rope, will move his hindquarters or forehand out of your way when you ask, and is respectful of your space while leading.

Is your horse afraid of the clippers? Is clipping his bridlepath or ears an argument? A cold day can also be used to help him to accept the clippers. Many times we only work on this the day before going to an event, and usually with a “get it done” mentality. By working on clipping at a non-important time, we can spend a little time reassuring our horse that the clippers are not so intimidating. Keep in mind that you do not have to cut any protective winter hair. Usually the sound and vibration are the culprits, so just moving the clippers over your horse can be very beneficial
.
If the temperature is warmer and riding is possible, be aware that your horse will require more warm up and cool down time than he would in warmer weather. Give him time in the beginning of the session to stretch his muscles. Be sure to do a little more flexing to help warm up those cold muscles. Also remember that cooling out before blanketing or returning to the pasture is imperative to avoid pneumonia or tying up.

So as we enter the coldest months of the year, remember that there is more to training your horse than just riding. Reflect on your horse’s abilities and weaknesses and use this time to isolate smaller problems to correct. Come springtime, you will be ahead of the game!
