Hello, Friends!  I hope all is well with all of you. I just got back from working the booth at the 2007 NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City. I saw a lot of great horses and got my Waffle House fix while down there. I had the opportunity to see a lot of old friends and met some new ones.

Horse Management Tip

Human Logic vs. Horse Logic
By Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch

When a horse is afraid, he tenses and his head goes up. Now human logic says that to get the desired drop in head carriage, all the human has to do is to put a tie-down on the horse until he understands his head is suppose to stay there. However, if the horse is tense because he didn’t understand what is expected of him and is confused by the tie-down, then this will make it all worse. From the “horse’s point of view”, the tie-down is only another threat or a discomfort for him. If the human were to allow the horse to relax, the head would end up with the desired carriage without the use of mechanical aids.

I once knew a young lady who had a tie-down on a horse she was attempting to mount. The horse reared up and the lady inadvertently pulled the horse over on top of her. She did not live to ride another horse. Be very careful with tie-downs, they should only be used in the hands of a professional.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Lone Ranger Horse Cookies

Ingredients:
1 cup sweet feed
2 cups bran
1 cup flax seed
4 large carrots, shredded
1 cup molasses
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup applesauce

Preheat oven to 300o F.  Mix molasses, brown sugar, carrots and applesauce in one bowl.  In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients.  Slowly combine the molasses mixture with the dry ingredients.  Add only enough molasses mixture to form a thick dough (add more bran if necessary).  Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil.  Using a tablespoon, drop batter onto cookie sheet and flatten slightly to form portions about the size of a silver dollar.  Bake at 300o for about 1 hour.  Flip and bake for an additional 45 minutes until they are dried out.  (Keep checking to make sure they don't burn.)

Save for a special treat for your favorite horse!
