Volume 3, Number 11
Hello, Friends! I hope all of you are getting a good start on enjoying the summer. Memorial Day weekend, I was able to take our son Brent and his horse Peppy to the annual horse show in Lyndon, Kansas. Actually we both took our horses and had a great time. However, there was an incident that had everyone concerned. A little girl named Holly was competing in the rescue race and as she and her partner were heading home, her horse began to buck and she fell off hitting her head. What a very scary few minutes, but I understand that she is going to be just fine. I am convinced that all kids, and probably adults should be wearing helmets. Wearing helmets to ride is a good practice and glad that our kids will not ride unless they have a helmet on.
Extreme Cowboy Weekend is coming! This is the last newsletter before the Extreme Cowboy weekend at the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Kansas City on June 22-24th. Make plans to spend the weekend in Kansas City and attend this. Along with some great riding competition, there is going to be a trade show along with all kinds of stuff for the kids to do. On Saturday night you won’t want to miss the barbeque with Western Music Duo of the year, Belinda Gail and Curly Musgrave. Make sure you click on to the event in our calendar section below and check it out. You can call Bill Hull with the event at 913/208-6381.or go to www.saddleandsirloin.com to get directions and more information.
You should be receiving your Summer Edition of the Better Horses Network publication. I hope that you like the new format with the feature picture on the front. I did take the option to mail this issue out in bulk mail with the present subscribers receiving it by first class mail. I hope that you enjoy the issue.
Better Horses Radio is growing! Recently we picked up KLUP in San Antonio, Texas and it looks as though WCGA in Sea Island, Georgia will be picking us up also. Check us out at www.betterhorsesradio.com and let us know your UNBELIEVABLE of the week. We might use it and get you something for it! Also if you have a question or a topic you would like us to address, let us know.
Have you checked out www.royalfantasyrodeo.com? Tied to the Praire Circuit Finals and the American Royal, it is a fun contest play. Log on and try your luck. Also make sure you check out Purina Mills’ www.betteranimals.com.
Whether it is competing at your discipline, trail riding or just riding around, I hope that you enjoy this summer. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Leading: Deserves Another Tip
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
When leading a horse you have two choices, the so-called “old way” or the “new
way” (Natural Horsemanship if you will). I have to say the new system does work
and horses learn the system far quicker than humans.
The majority of horses trained by people who are the product of the “old way”,
lead while holding the rope about 6 inches from the halter. How close you want a
horse to you while leading depends on what you are going to be doing with him.
It doesn’t matter where he is, as long as he is not walking all over you or
trying to barge in front.
If you try to restrain the horse with your strength, even though you can’t, you
will never have a horse that leads lightly and with respect for your space. If
you man handle the horse, push or pull, you will never feel the experience of
walking along with a horse that you can’t feel on the end of the rope.
Horsey Treat Recipe
Try this delicious Burrito recipe for a summertime treat for your
favorite horse:
Burrito Surprise
Ingredients:
1 soft burrito
1 carrot sliced lengthwise in 4 pieces
carrot green tops
1/2 cup bran
1/2 cup molasses
Lay a burrito out flat. Put carrots side by side on top. Add a few carrot
greens and set aside. In a bowl, mix bran and molasses together. Pour mixture
on top of carrots and roll the burrito tightly. Wrap a green carrot top around
burrito to tie it closed.
