June 18, 2007
Volume 3, Number 12

Hello, Friends!  I hope all is well with all of you. What a great weekend and Father's Day it was for me, spending it with the family along with our son and daughter-in law, Nick and Megan. I also got to see my grandson, Aiden, for the first time and spend time with Emma, my granddaughter. I think I am going to have a cowgirl in the family with the way Emma loved to ride the pony. Pushing close to 90 degrees it might have seemed as though the weather was warm, but you know I won’t complain if it gets 15 degrees warmer, last February is still close in my memory.

The next two weekends will prove to be a great time for the horse owner. The Extreme Cowboy Race is finally here in Kansas City at the Saddle & Sirloin Club. Beginning Friday, June 22nd and going through Sunday, the 24th, this weekend will showcase 60 riders competing for the chance to win and make the finals this fall. Along with the competition, you will have lots of fun by enjoying the trade show and exhibits. You won’t want to miss the Barbeque On The Lawn on Saturday night. Along with talking to the contestants, Craig Cameron, and Jerry Diaz, you can listen to Western Music Duo Of The Year, Belinda Gail and Curly Musgrave. For more information look at the calendar in this issue or call Bill Hull at 913-208-6381.

The following weekend you can join us at the 4th Annual Old West Cowboy Days in Ottawa, Kansas. It all starts with the Earl Kuhn Art Show, Sale and Reception on Friday night, June 29th, at the Carnegie Center in Ottawa. The parade and cattle drive begins the next morning and we want the riders to turn out to be in the parade. Saturday and Sunday will be filled with Western Music, Cowboy Poetry, Colt Starting, Stock Dog, booths, trade show, and you name it. Also on Saturday night we will feature an evening concert with Belinda Gail & Curly Musgrave. Also performing with them on Saturday Night will be Cowboy Poet, Geff Dawson, and Western Music Singer Delbert Shields. Sunday will be centered around the “Dutch Oven Cookoff."  It is not too late to enter the Dutch Oven Cookoff.  For more information, click on the event in the calendar or go to www.oldwestcowboydays.com or you can call 785/242-1411.

Our Better Horses Radio Show continues to grow! If you have anything you would like for us to cover on our show, your recommendations are always appreciated. Plans are in the works to take our show to some of the events across the country and area. If you have not yet caught our show, you can always log in to www.betterhorsesradio.com.

If you have not taken the Strategy Challenge, make sure you sign up by July 1. If you are not feeding Purina’s Strategy or have not tried it, this is an excellent opportunity to give it a try to show you how it works. The feedback from owners feeding Strategy has always been positive, but with new “Enhanced” Strategy it has been tremendous. My hats goes off to the Purina Horse Research Team for the what they are doing. Because of Purina’s Research we can say, “We feed it to our horses first, before we ask you to feed it to yours."

Let me know if there is anyway I can be of  help and I will talk to you in a couple of weeks.  I hope to see you at these upcoming events.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Biting, Fix It Now!
By Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch

Horses, by nature, are very oral. They interact with other horses by grooming, scolding, and caressing. The old saying, “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” works great with horses, but not with humans. Correction for nipping must be swift, but not severe nor with anger, however, your response time is critical and the horse needs to be sent out of your space and put to work immediately, perhaps on the longe line, letting him know that biting or nipping means work on his part.

So every time your horse thinks you are his peer and tries to take a nip out of you, remember three responses, react fast, but not severely, and then put him to work. With consistency, you and your horse will overcome his desire to bite and you can then be partners on your terms and not his.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Try this simple cookie recipe for your special horse . . .

Summer Treat Cookies

1 cup uncooked oatmeal
1 cup flour
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp. salt
1 tblsp. sugar
2 tblsps. corn or vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup molasses

Mix ingredients in a bowl in the order listed.  Make small balls and place on a greased cookie sheet sprayed with Pam.  Bake at 350o for 15 minutes or until golden brown.  Horses (and people) love 'em!
