Volume 3, Number 16
Hello, Friends!
I hope all is well with you and you have been enjoying your summer. I am in Nashville at the Purina Dealer Expo and came in early to attend the Horse Owner Workshop’s Sponsor meeting. It will be great to see all of our partners at this meeting.
If you get a chance, make sure you come down to Kansas Reining Horse Assn.’s Sunflower Slide to be held this weekend at the ExpoCentre in Topeka. Purina and Mid America Equine Sales are hosting the Futurity Draw Party and Purina Pro Event on Friday night at the Ag. Center located just north of the Arena. There are three days of Reining starting on Friday, Aug.24th and running through Sunday, Aug.26th. I hope I get to see you at this great event. There are so many great events coming up in the next few weeks, so make sure you check out the calendar section of the newsletter.
Our Fall Edition of Better Horses Network is coming out shortly. I want to thank all of you who advertised in this edition. The theme of this issue will be centered around this year’s American Royal and specifically the Praire Circuit Finals. The dates of this great event will be Oct.24-27 to be held in Kemper Arena. It is going to be a fun time to attend the Circuit Finals and enjoy the Royal.
I would like to welcome the Family Center in Harrisonville, MO and Paola, KS as the newest Purina Dealers in the area. They will be a tremendous addition to the Purina Team!
Make sure you contact your Purina Rep or Dealer and ask about the Strategy Challenge Promotion. This is an excellent opportunity to give Purina’s Strategy a try so you can see the top performance it delivers to your horse. Don’t hesitate to e-mail me or give me a call at (785) 418-6047, and I would be happy to explain the promotion.
Don’t forget to tune in and listen to Better Horses Radio on a station nearest to you. If you have a local station that would be a candidate for our show, let us know so we can contact them to pick up our show. You can always check out our archive of shows by logging on to www.betterhorsesradio.com.
It has been a great week, getting the opportunity to spend some time with our grandchildren and all of our kids. Also we had our first Horse Health Fair last week with a terrific turnout at Premier Farm & Ranch near Raymore, Missouri. I hope I get to see you at some of the Horse Health Fairs that will be coming up. Thanks for all you do and let me know if I can be of help with anything.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tips
DO HORSES LOVE US?
By Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
Not long ago, I had someone ask me, "Do horses like or even love
us?" I feel we should resist the temptation to put human qualities
in horses. Horses are neither naughty nor nice. Horses aren't loving nor caring.
They are not intelligent like humans, nor are they keen to learn new skills, and
they certainly don't treat problems as a challenge. They see problems as a
threat and often panic when faced with new situations. Horses are simply horses.
However, they are very aware of their place in life, and are extremely simple in
their routine, from feeding to fighting. They dislike change. We too often take
the human perspective and change our horse's routine to avoid boredom. I think
this can sometimes be a mistake. Horses prefer to do the same things in the same
way - thereby avoiding risk and jeopardizing their survival. Perhaps we get that
soft nicker when they see us coming because of the carrots we always bring them.
But it sure doesn't mean we can't love them.
Horsey Treat Recipe
For an easy-to-make horse treat, try this recipe (a
good, easy recipe for youngsters to make for their favorite horse):
Easy No-Cook Snaps
Ingredients:
4 cups Bran
4 cups Applesauce
Mix ingredients together. Batter should be doughy. Roll out with a
rolling pin and cut into shapes or use cookie cutters.
Let dough dry and serve.
. . . a simple, easy-to-make delight!
