Volume 3, Number 17
Hello, Friends!
I hope that all of you had an enjoyable Labor Day Weekend. We had all the kids and grandchildren home which was really a bonus. On Friday night, the boys and I went out for a little fishing. Didn’t catch much but was still a great time out there fishing. On Saturday morning, my son Brent and I joined my friend, Allyn Mann and his daughter Helen, for a morning of riding at the Silkville Ranch near Williamsburg, Kansas. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Congratulations to Brent Wright for his third place at Ariat’s Slidezone Futurity in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I also heard that Brent took second in the Open Class behind another “Ride For The Brand” teammate Craig Schmersal. Also congratulations goes to Bev King for her success at the show. I heard the show was a great show!
You won’t want to miss the WRCA (Working Ranch Cowboys Association) Ranch Rodeos this coming weekend, Sept.7 & 8th, at the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Kansas City. The Rodeos will start at 7:00pm each night. Saddle and Sirloin is located at 14401 Holmes in the south part of Kansas City. Open to everyone on Saturday, is the Ranch Horse Competition. Entry fee is $50 and the Ranch Horse Competition will begin at 10:30am. Then on Sunday, September 9th, the Saddle and Sirloin will host the Women’s Ranch Rodeo. For more information give Bill Hull a call at (913) 208-6381.
I did get word on Friday that our Better Horses Radio show will be expanding to the Festus and Farmington, MO markets. Make sure you check out our website at www.betterhorsesradio.com.

Horse Management Tips
FLY MASKS
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
www.sevenoaksranch.com
So, you went out and bought a new fly mask for your horse, huh? Looks nice and clean and fluffy. But what will it look like in a few weeks, after your horse has rolled in the mud and the mask has been chewed on by other horses? Where it is suppose to be fluffy and contour to your horses face, it will be flat and dirty. To be very honest with you, I have yet to see a fly mask that does what it is supposed to do without constant care. In order to keep it doing its job, you need to wash it every couple of days, and check to see if there any openings that flies can crawl under.
The problem is an old or dirty fly mask can allow flies to crawl up under the fleece and become trapped under the mask, allowing them to wage war on the horse's eyes. The horse then looks for a place to try and rub the flies off and uses a tree, another horse or even his own leg to try to get rid of the constant irritation of the flies biting at his eyes. Most fly masks are made of a coarse material in order to be stiff and curve out away from the horse's eyes. But when a horse is rubbing the mask on an object, the mask will invert and can cause eye injury. I feel that nature did a pretty good job of making a horse able to shake his skin and head and use his tail or a tail of another horse to free himself of insects.
If you do use a fly mask, be sure to keep it clean and replace it with a new one as often as possible.
Horsey Treat Recipe
My Horse's Birthday Cake
1 plastic bowl (Cool Whip bowl will work fine)
2-3 large carrots, chopped up lengthwise
1 large apple, chopped up
molasses
brown sugar
white sugar cubes
Take part of carrots and put them in bottom of bowl. Add apples, then do
one more layer of carrots. Pack the top with some brown sugar. Then
take some molasses and drip it over the top. Add a few sugar cubes over
the top for decoration.
Now invite some of your horse's friends over for a birthday party (as this may
be a little too much for just one horse)!
