Hello, Friends!
We had a great time at our 8th Annual Dream Ride in the Flint Hills
last weekend. Although it was a little windy, the weather cooperated with us. It
was so good to see our friends along with making many new ones. Josh and Gwen
Hoy along with the entire crew of the Flying W Ranch did a super job of hosting
the ride and event. The ride, food, entertainment, and fellowship was just
great!
Make sure you get down to the American Royal this weekend to enjoy the barbeque along with the XETC Calf Roping Championships. Information is following in this newsletter and it is basically “Drag Racing” but with Calf Roping. The XETC Championships will be held both Friday and Saturday nights in Kemper Arena.
Good luck to many of you who are heading back to the Quarter Horses Congress. Also this weekend is the “Cancer Ride” at the Bob Foote Ranch near Manhattan, KS. Information is in this newsletter along with being on our website.
We have many Horse Health Fairs going on these next few weeks. On Wednesday, we will be at Y Bar H Outpost and Pet in Olathe, KS and next week on Oct.10th, we will be at Family Center Farm & Home in Paola, KS. If you are in the area, stop by and attend the meeting and dinner. You can go to www.purinamills.com and check any Horse Health Fairs in your area.
I do want to say that I was very impressed with the “Extreme Trail Challenge” that Linda Grimmet put on near Lone Jack, MO. It was a great event with a great turnout! I hope she is planning more of them.
You won’t want to miss Craig Cameron’s EXTREME COWBOY RACE WORLD FINALS AT THE SADDLE & SIRLOIN CLUB IN KANSAS CITY on Nov. 2, 3, & 4th. Information is inside.
Don’t forget to check out our websites at www.betterhorsesnetwork.com along with www.betterhorsesradio.com and check out all what we have going on along with listen to one of our radio shows that we have archived. We want to welcome the KTJJ FM listening area in Festus and Farmington, MO which will start airing our show this weekend. We are excited to be in your market.
I do want to mention that probably in our next newsletter you will get an invitation to join www.goldbucklenetwork.com for three months at no charge. Be looking for the details and if you like what you see, visit their site and sign up for a three-month subscription at no charge.
Let me know if there is any way I can be of help, and I hope you enjoy the newsletter!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Don't Be A Predator
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
www.sevenoaksranch.com
I'm sure you have heard the expression, "from a horse's point of view".
We need to be aware of it when we are working with our horses, as there is a big
difference between your horse's point of view and yours.
He is a prey animal and at the bottom of the food chain. He has no claws or
fangs to protect him. Only with his keen perception and quick departure can he
survive in the wild. However, these 'instincts' never go away, they can be
suppressed, but they are always there and can surface whenever he perceives to
be in danger.
Since humans have predator characteristics, such as binocular vision, being able
to judge distance, which a horse cannot do, you need to approach him slowly and
softly, not upright and straight on. Until he feels safe in your presence, you
should not look him in the eye as a lion would, instead look down and give him
the chance to realize that you are probably not going to kill him and have him
for dinner.
The less you act like a predator, the sooner you will have his confidence and
your horse will begin to learn what you are teaching him.

Thoughts To Ponder
By Charley Green
Close Enough
Back in the days when I was in the construction business, my
excavation contractor was a gruff-talking, opinionated and likeable character
who took pleasure in letting me know how this building business needed to be
done. His saving grace was his skill and ability to figure out how to
complete the tough jobs.
This excavator had a favorite saying he always told new builders.
When it came time to finish digging a basement, he'd say, "If we're within six
inches on a house and twelve inches on a barn, we're close enough."
Doggone if the first time or two he told me this, I didn't get suckered
into double checking his work because my tolerance standard was a whole lot
closer than six inches. He was always right on the mark and I learned a
lesson about taking folks so seriously based on what they said before checking 'em
out on what they could do. Of course, I brought a smile to an excavator's
day.
