Hello, Friends! 

I hope all is going well with you. The next few weeks will be packed full of great events at this year’s American Royal. The Livestock Show, Junior Rodeo, & PBR go on this weekend with the Junior Rodeo and PRCA Dodge Prairie Circuit Rodeo going on the 24th thru the 27th.  Also, make sure you stop by and see us at our booth inside Hale Arena and visit our Better Animals® Exhibit in the Governor's Building. I am writing this letter to you while I am attending the Kansas Cutting Horses Assn.’s Futurity in Hutchinson, Kansas.  My hat goes off to Jim & Patty Kier for putting on such a nice event.  It is great to see all of the cutters!  I am looking forward to seeing all of them again at the American Royal Cutting on November 7th.

This Thursday night, Oct.18th, we will be holding a first at Heritage Tractor in Topeka, Kansas, Brummel Farm Service in Garnett, Kansas, and Premier Farm & Ranch in Raymore, MO.  We will be holding a Purina Horse Health Fair meeting at 6:30 pm via satellite at each one of these dealerships. This is definitely “cutting edge” in the industry whereas you will get to hear a presentation put on by our Equine Nutrition Nutritionists, along with Veterinarians from our Research Farm in Gray Summit, MO.  There will also be a live call-in after the meeting.  Make sure you get in touch with the dealer closest to you and join us on Thursday night.

Don’t forget the Extreme Cowboy Race National Finals with Craig Cameron will be Nov.2nd, 3rd, & 4th at the Saddle and Sirloin Club in Kansas City. They have a great weekend lined out packed with a lot of fun.  More information is inside or call Bill Hull at (913) 208-6381.

Also, don’t forget the Dennis Reis No Dust Tour Stop in Lyons, Kansas at the Celebration Centre on Oct.20-21st.  Contact Lisa Clark at lc@tlcentz.com for more information.  The Kansas Foundation Quarter Horse Registry Assn. Horse Management Tip

Keep One Step Ahead

Every time we are with our horse, we are training him. We need to be aware of just what he is learning. Sometimes things seem so subtle that we don't notice that he is learning what we will accept, and not what we want him to learn.

Let's say you're working on getting your horse to come to a complete stop. He stops but takes a couple of extra steps; you let it go because it was a pretty good stop. Now, what did he learn? He learned that he should stop, but that it was ok to dribble on a few more steps. The same goes for teaching your horse to stand still. He may stand quietly for a few seconds, then start to move sideways or back up. If we allow this, then we have taught him that this is really what we want and the next time we ask him to stand still, it will surely only be a short time before he begins to move about. The correction needs to be immediate if we are to obtain the results we are looking for.

We need to always be one step ahead of our horses and sometimes, maybe two steps.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Trick or Treat Carrot/Apple Horse Cookies

1 cup sweet feed
2 cups bran
1 cup flax seed
4 large carrots (shredded)
1 cup molasses
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup applesauce

Mix molasses, brown sugar, carrots and applesauce in one bowl.  Mix the dry ingredients in another bowl.  Slowly combine the wet and dry mixtures together.  Add only enough wet ingredients to form a thick dough.  (Add more bran if necessary.)  Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil.  Using a tablespoon, drop batter onto the cookie sheet and flatten slightly to form portions about the size of a silver dollar.  Bake at 300o for about one hour.  Flip and bake for an additional 45 minutes -- until they are dried out.  (Keep checking to make sure they don't burn.)

Depression

The home building business taught me the realities of economic cycles, particularly regarding debt and loss of income when the "recessionary" times showed up.  Other builders experienced similar challenges and some had a different attitude about it.

During one of these down cycles, I met a friend of mine in the business and asked how he was doing in these tough times.  He replied, "My business has been so bad for so long, it's taken me into a state of depression.  So, to make myself feel better, I went out and bought a new pickup . . . on credit!"

Folks, when times seem the toughest, that's when you need to buckle up and not let 'em get any tougher by doing things that'll wind up taking you further down.
