Hello, Friends!

I hope that you had a nice weekend and know that you probably are getting ready for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I had the opportunity to go to the AQHA World Show this past weekend, and it was great to see so many friends.

Congratulations to John and Barbara Hoffer of Auburn, Kansas and their three year-old halter stallion, Not Kiddin Me for winning the 3 Year Old Stallion Open Championship. They also won the Reserve Amateur 3 Year-Old Championship.

Congratulations goes to Team Brad Lund for capturing the 2007 Super Horse Award with the filly, Shiners Diamond Jill. She is owned by Garth and Amanda Gardiner of Ashland, Kansas. This is the second time Brad has won this award in three years and last year he had the Reserve Super Horse. Shiners Diamond Jill will be reside in Brad’s barn along with the 2005 Super Horse, With All Probability. Brad also won the Open Junior Heading Horse Award riding Jim and Michele Holland’s filly, Right Probably Knot.

Champion halter horse trainer, Denny Hasset, lead Tom and Mary Reed's mare, Sheza One Classy Kid, to the Reserve Open Championship for 3 Year-old Mares.

These are just a few of the great successes that were accomplished at this year’s AQHA World Show. It was a great trip being able to see a lot of friends and enjoying a great breakfast at the Waffle House every morning. It doesn’t get much better than getting it Scattered, Covered, & Smothered!

We have a Horse Health Meeting scheduled for Wednesday night, Nov. 28, at the Family Center in Harrisonville, MO.  Make sure you try to attend this informative meeting. Plans are to have the team from Wilhite & Frees Equine Hospital putting on a presentation. I will also be putting on a session on Equine Nutrition. Information is in the calendar of this newsletter. Also, we have another Horse Health Seminar scheduled on Tuesday, Dec.4th , at the Fairgrounds in Cameron, MO.  Call Luke Jackson at Cameron Cooperative for more information, 816/632-2124.

If any of you plan on going to the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City, make sure you stop by Brent Wright’s stall area on Saturday, Dec.1st. We will be hosting a reception for our customers and friends beginning around 2:00pm. Come by and enjoy a good brisket sandwich along with some fellowship with some friends. I hope to see you.

I would like to take this time to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Let me know if I can be of a help in any way.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Found Horse -- Need Your Help!

Teresa Elkins is looking for the rightful owner of a horse found in Chouteau, Oklahoma.

Someone saw a truck pull up in a secluded area by a lake, open the back of the trailer, take the horse out and run him off and then drive away.  He showed up at the Elkins house a week or so later.  They have reported the incident to the Mayes County Sheriff's office and the Chouteau Police, but no one has come forward to claim him in their county, so they are asking for our help.  They have called 18 other counties with no luck also.  The horse has been posted on the "Stolen Horse International" website, it has been posted on the Oklahoma Foundation Quarter Horse Forum and flyers have been distributed locally.

While the horse will have a home with the Elkins, they would like to do everything they can to find his rightful owner.  He looks to be a Quarter Horse/Palomino and about 18 years old. He has had a vet visit, and his overall health is good.  For additional information, please contact the Mayes County Sheriff’s office at 918-825-3535.  If anyone knows any information on this horse, your input would be welcomed.

Horse Management Tip

LICK & CHEW
by Sally Dwyer
www.SevenOaksRanch.com

I'm sure you have heard the expression "lick and chew", but do you know what it really means?

Actually there are two different thoughts on licking and chewing. Remembering that horses can only think of one thing at a time, one explanation is that he is mentally processing what is happening to him and it is his way of telling us that learning and understanding has just taken place. Then others believe that "lick and chew" just means a release of tension. I believe that both are probably true. I've seen horses "lick and chew" indicating that they have learned a lesson of some sort and then go right back and show that the lesson was not learned at all.

Watch when your horse licks and chews, give him a short time to work his thought process and then go back and ask him to perform the action again. If it is a release from stress, he will most likely lick and chew again. Or perhaps he really has understood what you are teaching him and readily complies with your request.

Horsey Treat Recipe

A great Thanksgiving treat for your favorite horse . . .

Thanksgiving Horse Cookies

In a large mixing bowl, combine:
2 cups sweet feed or equivalent feed
    1 cup white flour
1 cup sugar (white or brown)
2 tblsp. vegetable oil or shortening
    1 cup water

Preheat oven to 350oF.  Grease and flour baking sheet.  Using a tablespoon, drop 2" diameter clumps on baking sheet.  Bake for approximately
20 minutes at 350oF.  Makes about a 5 dozen cookies.

(When warm, they will be soft.  Let sit out for a few days until they are hard and crunchy before giving as treats.)

Thoughts To Ponder

Friends

The folks you hang with (figuratively, rather than literally) make the difference in where you go in life.

The good ones won't rain on your parade (and don't you rain on theirs) and will be there standing back to back with you when it's time to put on the big boy pants and Cowboy Up to the challenges and opportunities of life.
