Hello, Friends!

I just got back from the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City, and WOW was it exciting! Congratulations to Shawn Flarida on another win. It came down to the last horse. My neighbor and good friend, Brent Wright, had three in the finals and it was fun to be able to watch him. While I was gone for three days from home, it was nice to see it never did freeze. It is always a lot better when the family doesn’t have to break ice while doing chores.

We have a Horse Health Meeting this Tuesday night, Dec.4th, at the fairgrounds in Cameron, MO. If you are in the area, we would like to see you. You can call Luke at 816/632-2124 to give him your reservation.  (Details are in the calendar section)

This week I am also heading out to Las Vegas to attend the NFR. It is a great time, and I am looking forward to attending. I hope I see some of you out there.

In 2008, we are getting some new rides scheduled. We are planning on having a Spring Dream Ride in the Flint Hills the week of May 3rd and May 4th. Details will be coming in the Stallion Edition of our Better Horses Network. Also, we are planning a Saturday and Sunday ride in June to benefit Old West Cowboy Days that is held in Ottawa, Kansas. Plans are to hold it at the Silkville Ranch near Williamsburg, Kansas.

By now those of you who have subscribed should have received our Winter Edition of the Better Horses publication. If you did not subscribe, you can always pick it up at participating Purina dealers. This year’s Winter Edition completes our eighth year of the paper. It has been real rewarding to see how it has grown.

The holiday season is my favorite time of year. I hope that you really get a chance to enjoy it with your family and friends. Let me know if I can be of help.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

ONLY ONE THING AT A TIME, PLEASE
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch

Horses can only focus on one thing at a time. They can either give or receive information, but not both at the same time. If you are working on some training process with your horse and abruptly do something to distract him, either unintentionally or on purpose, you will lose him as to what you were working on.

For example, you are trying to get him to take the left lead into a canter and he keeps missing it, so the next time you ask for it and he misses it again, you smack him pretty hard with your crop. Where does his mind go? To the crop, of course, and how it hurt. This kicks in his predator/survival instinct and he forgets all about taking the correct lead and you have to start over. Always keep in mind his one-thing at a time thought process and try not to distract him to another situation until you are ready for him to move on the something else.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Stocking Stuffer Treat

2 carrots, shredded
1 apple, shredded
1/3 cup molasses
1/4 cup bran
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup regular oatmeal
2 tblsp. salt

Mix all ingredients thoroughly.  Should be thick and doughy.  Add more bran if needed.  Press onto a greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 400o for approximately 30 minutes.  Cut into bite-size pieces while still warm.

A special stocking stuffer Holiday treat . . . for that very special horse of yours!
