Volume 3, Number 4

Hello, Friends!  Finally it is starting to warm up! It was so great to see the weather improving on Sunday.  I just finished up the coldest week of HOW meetings I have ever been involved with. We had Jody and Suzan Cunningham for a week of clinics. I was thankful for any Global Warming that we had because we couldn’t have taken it much colder. Despite the cold weather, Jody did a super job. I want to thank the Extension folks along with Hyalogic in helping with these clinics last week.

I am really looking forward to Kansas Equifest this week with it being the 10th Anniversary. They have a great line up of clinicians, and it will be great to see everyone. Make sure you stop by and see us at the Purina booth. We will be located just north of the Main Arena like we have been in the past years.

After Equifest, we will be right back at it with Van Hargis coming to town. Make sure you refer to this newsletter, www.betterhorsesnetwork.com , or www.purinamills.com and see when we will be in your area. Our riding clinic on March 3 is sold out with Van, but we will have plenty of room for auditors.

The new Enhanced Strategy has really been going well. Make sure you stop by and ask your dealer how you can take the “Strategy Challenge”. When you figure that in most cases you can cut your feedings as much as 25-30%, Strategy is still the best buy out there. The bottom line is that the “Best Just Got Better.”  Don’t hesitate to give me a call or e-mail me if I can be of help.

March 9, 10, & 11th plan to attend Missouri’s HorseFest in Springfield, MO. Information is on this newsletter or you can go to www.horsefest.net . We are taking Better Horses Radio on the road and will be running our show from the event.  I hope to see you folks there.

We are planning some great meetings involving Equine Marketing -- “Buying and Selling Horses” along with a seminar on “Working Sponsorships For Your Organizations.”  I will keep you informed when we get them together.

I want to thank you for all you do. Let me know if there is anyway I can be of  help.  Until next time . . .

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Better Horses Network Request:

Every now and then, you find some way to help someone -- sometimes that means just bringing two people together to make a wish come true.  I am delighted to report that we found a wonderful horse for the Nunns who had made a request through our newsletter for a horse for their daughter who had lost her horse to colic.  One of our readers, Diane Franklin, was able to fulfill their request.  Diane read the request from the Nunns in our electronic newsletter and had the perfect horse for them.  She is delighted that her gelding filled their need, but now Diane is a horse shy.  She is looking for a gaited foxtrotter or walker or something on the older side.  Maybe one of our readers can now help Diane.  Please contact her at (785) 817-6303 or
(816) 591-9303 or e-mail dfranklin@kans.com

This is exactly what our Better Horses Network is all about -- bringing all of us together and raising your horse experience to a higher level!  We are so happy that we could play a small part in this happy ending!

Horse Management Tip

Goodbye Bad, Hello Good
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch

Horses seem to learn the things we don’t want them to learn very quickly and the things we do want them to learn very, very slowly. Perhaps horses have it backwards. They most likely think that it is ‘good’ to dump the rider and run back to the barn for feed or refuse to take the lead we have been working on for days. On the other hand, ‘bad’ to a horse could be putting up with an hour of boring flat work where no end to the circle work is in sight.

Remember too, that our moods affect our horses. A ‘bad’ mood day should not be a working day but a pleasure-riding day or even no riding at all. A bad mood on our part can make the much progress slower, as our stress becomes the horse’s stress.

When we get upset or cranky, we lose timing, softness and opportunities that we could have used. Stay calm and your horse will reward your patience.
Don’t let your horse learn that ring work is boring. Teach him that after a good workout, he will be able to leave the ring for someplace that is better for him. Perhaps a short trail ride or maybe some grazing time. That is ‘good’ for him, and ‘good’ for us, too because we both have learned to deal with our ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and will become better partners in the end.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Horse & Dog Cookies

1-1/2 pint (or 500 ml) of molasses
1 jar of applesauce
1/2 c. of corn or vegetable oil
8 c. of large flake oatmeal
4 c. of bran (horse bran or from the cereal aisle in the grocery store, or use a bran cereal)
1/2 c. of salt
1-1/2 tblsp. of baking soda
2 lbs. shredded carrots
10 c. of whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350oF.  Mix all together and check for "cookie" consistency in the dough.  Grease cookie sheets (with molasses in the recipe, this is really important!).  Drop by large, horse-sized spoonfuls onto the cookie sheet.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Air out the house because it will smell like molasses!
