Volume 3, Number 5
Hello, Friends!
I hope all is well with all of you. I am just wrapping up a nine-day HOW Tour with Van Hargis. We will have one tonight at the Sun Rock Ranch and Resort near Junction City and have another one tomorrow night at the Honey Creek Arena near Dawson, Nebraska. If you are close, make sure to drop in. Finally--the weather seems to be starting to warm up. I have to say the weather has been somewhat challenging with the HOW Events we have held the past several days. It was good to see many of you at this year’s Equifest in Wichita. I personally think it was one of the best Equifest Events I have ever attended. Congratulations, Kansas Horse Council, for a job well done!
With the cost of feed consistently going up, it is more important than ever to be as efficient as possible in feeding our horses. As I say at my meetings, don’t evaluate your feed on what it costs per bag, but instead evaluate it on “What it costs per day to feed your horse”. Now is an excellent time to try the New Enhanced “Strategy” horse feed. Make sure you stop by your local Purina Dealer or attend a local HOW Event and pick up your coupon to take the Strategy Challenge. If you have several horses and you would like to try Strategy, you can take the Strategy Challenge with a program we have to offer. Get in touch with your local Purina dealer or Purina Representative to find out more about it.
You will also see on the New Strategy bags a logo called “FeedGuard”. This is the first time in my career that I have ever seen a feed company that has trademarked its Quality Assurance Program. The bottom line is Purina has taken its Quality and Safety in making feed to a “Higher Level”.
If any of you are interested in advertising in the Spring Edition of the Better Horses Network, get in touch with my wife, Connie, at 785/242-8555 or 785/418-2615. You can also e-mail me or call me at 785/418-6047.
Make sure to try to attend HorseFest this weekend in Springfield, MO. Information about this great event is on the calendar. If you do come down, make sure you stop by our Better Horses Radio Booth where we will be taping a show. I hope to see you at this event!
After being gone 30 out of 38 days putting on Horse Owner Workshops, attending meetings, and attending Equine Events, I am looking forward to spending Spring Break with the family. Also, I am planning on going back to Quantico and spend a few days with our son, Luke, who is graduating from another level with the Marines. Somewhere in all of this, I plan to get our Spring Issue out.
It is really great to see you at the events. Let me know if I can be of any help!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Not The Same Clock
Sally Dwyer, Seven Oaks Ranch
Horses are not on the same page as we humans when it comes to the clock. They
don’t learn things at the same rate as people or each other. Some learn rather
quickly and others seem to take forever. When you work your horse, be sure of
your time clock. If you are in a hurry and only have a short time to spend with
him, then don’t take on any task that you can’t finish on a positive note. He
knows by your hurried movements that something is up, and that maybe he should
be worried about something, he just doesn’t know what. Horses tend to take on
the mood of the leader, which hopefully, is you.
There are many things you can work on in a short amount of time. Backing,
standing still, leading or anything he may need a little improvement on. Just be
sure you don’t rush him, his clock is very much different than yours, so save
the longer training jobs for when you’re not in a hurry and end up
short-changing him.
