Volume 3, Number 6

Hello, Friends!

You caught me in between the first and second week of some personal time I have taken off.  The first week I got the opportunity to go back to Quantico, Virginia and see Luke, one of our twins, graduate from the The Basic School with the Marines.  I, like all parents, are proud of our kids.  During last week I also worked on our Spring Edition of Better Horses Network.  For those of you who have subscribed, you should be receiving it around the first part of April. If you have not subscribed, make sure you go by your participating Purina Dealer and pick up your free copy. You can go on-line at www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and subscribe or send your name and address to Better Horses Network; P.O. Box 722; Ottawa, KS. 66067.

I want to congratulate the folks at Farm Talk Magazine for doing such a fine job with HorseFest in Springfield, MO.  Better Horses Radio had a good time putting on our show at this event.  Speaking of Better Horses Radio, we were excited to get the news that according to the Radio Arbitron Ratings, Better Horses Radio is the second most listened to radio show in the Topeka listening area with an average of 3300 listeners every Sunday morning.  If you look at the total time period between 6:00am until noon every Sunday, Better Horses Radio is the number one AM show listened to.  That is truly UNBELIEVABLE!  Thanks to all of you faithful listeners out there.

Our Strategy Challenge is going very well.  If there is any of you who would like to give Purina’s new enhanced Strategy a try, don’t hesitate to give me a call.  With the cost of feed where it is today, there is no better time than now to make sure you are on the best program.  Strategy still delivers Top Performance at a fair price.  Give me a call or e-mail me to let me show you what the Checkerboard can do for you.

Mark your calendars for April 24 and April 25th and try to attend one or both of our Equine Marketing Meetings.  Phil and David Solum from Mid America Equine Sales will be featured talking about “raising the bar” on buying and selling horses.  Professional trainers, Brent Wright, Fred Berschauer, Brad Lund, & Jim Dudley will be on hand to assist the Solums.  Jo Turner, owner of Roy Frey’s Western Lifestyles, and myself will put on a presentation involving “Sponsorships-From the Retail & Corporate View."  Also Dr. Katie Young, equine nutritionist from Purina Mills, will be talking about “Feeding to Win." The meeting will begin with a great “strip steak dinner."  The first meeting will be held at Heritage Tractor in Topeka, KS, and the second will be held Wednesday night, April 25th , at the Johnson County Fairgrounds.  Be watching out for more details.

If you have horses, equipment, stallion service, or something you want to advertise, make sure you contact us and put it in the Better Horses Electronic newsletter. The results have been positive!

I better sign off now and start getting ready for my first granddaughter’s first birthday! Until next time,

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

CINCHING UP!

In our recent trip to Equifest, I heard Craig Cameron refer to turning our horses into peanuts when you cinch them up.  Over the years, this has been one of the more common mistakes we see horse owners do as well--it seems to be very common. Riders throw the saddle up and immediately cinch it up "as tight as they can get."  This is one of the worst things you can do.  Have you ever seen a horse flip over backwards or lay down just after cinching.  Some horses cannot handle the tight pressure immediately in their girth area.

Take your time cinching up your horses.  Do a little, go back and do a little more, walk them around with just barely snug until they let go of that 2 inches of air they seem to come up with when you are saddling.  Do it gradually and your horse will be much more comfortable and you'll have a much safer saddling experience with all of your horses.

Ride safely,

Dawn & Geff Dawson

Horsey Treat Recipe

A special burrito treat for your favorite horse . . .

Burrito Surprise

Ingredients:
1 soft burrito
1 carrot sliced lengthwise in 4 pieces
carrot green tops
1/2 cup bran
1/2 cup molasses

Lay a burrito out flat.  Put carrots side by side on top.  Add a few carrot greens and set aside.  In a bowl, mix bran and molasses together.  Pour mixture on top of carrots and roll the burrito tightly.  Wrap a green carrot top around burrito to tie it closed.
