April 2, 2007
Volume 3, Number 7
Hello, Friends!
I hope all is well with everyone. I enjoyed the couple of weeks I took off spending time with the family and enjoying the boy’s spring break. If you have not subscribed to the Better Horses Network publication, you will be able to pick up your Spring Edition at your local Purina Dealer in a few days. To subscribe and get it mailed directly, go to www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and click on registration center.
With April here, we will be gearing up for some good events coming up. On April 14th, we will be celebrating the Grand Opening of Premier Farm & Ranch at the junction of 58 Hwy and Hwy 291 near Raymore, Missouri. (If you can make it over on Friday evening, April 13th, for the sneak preview and brisket dinner, let us know at 816/987-2362.) Make sure you come by and enjoy the festivities at the Grand Opening! Details are inside the calendar. Also, the April 14th weekend is the Ellsworth Ranch Rodeo weekend in Ellsworth, KS. On Saturday, there will be a special Ranch Horse Class for the area ranchers that should be exciting.
Stop by and meet our new dealer at Louisburg, KS. Chris Corsair and his family have just opened up Circle C Country Supply. They handle a full line of Purina Feeds along with other neat stuff.
Have you stopped by Lloyds Dog and Horse in Olathe, Kansas lately? If you haven’t, you need to stop in and meet Jamie and Dennis Young, the new owners of the now called Y Bar H Outpost and Pet. They have totally remodeled the store; and, WOW, does it look great! Mark your calendar for May 5th for their Grand Opening.
Make sure you attend one or both of the Equine Marketing Meetings to be held on April 24th and 25th of this month. On Tuesday, April 24th, the meeting will be held at Heritage Tractor in Topeka and on Wednesday night, April 25th, it will be held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner. Headed up with a session by Phil and David Solum of Mid America Equine Sales in Lamar, MO, it will be a fun and educational evening...Plus, you will enjoy a fantastic steak dinner. For details see the calendar below.
I was up at the Ray County 4-H Equine Trade Day yesterday and met a nice lady that is in need for a horse to buy for her young daughter who has some health problems. I told her to write up her story and send it so I can put it in our newsletter. There might be someone out there who has a horse that can “fit the bill” for this mother and daughter. I know, in many cases, people are hesitant to let a horse go because of concern of the type of home it will get. I hope we can find this little girl a horse.
I had the opportunity to meet Phil Haugen of Weatherford, Oklahoma. I heard so many great things about this trainer. His place sounds like a great place to attend one of his clinics. We are working on getting him up here. Go to www.philhaugenhorsemanship.com and learn more about him..
DON’T FORGET TO TUNE IN TONIGHT, APRIL 2, TO RFD-TV’S MONDAY NIGHT LIVE AT 7:00 PM CST FOR PURINA’S BROADCAST ON FEEDING SUPPLEMENTS. (See calendar section for details on program.) You will also learn about the Nature’s Essential Contest.
Isn’t this horse thing fun??!! If I can be of help, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or give me a call. Until next time . . .
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Timing Is What It’s All About
By Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
In our everyday working with our horses, we are consistently applying
pressure, asking them to do things for us. However, sometimes our timing gets
off and we neglect to offer the reward to the horse quickly enough. Reward for
the horse is the simple release of pressure from what you are asking of him as
soon as you see progress. But timing is so important. If you release too late,
you have lost the positive reinforcement you are looking for.
I remember a rider in a show whose horse missed a lead. He did nothing in the
ring, but after the class he began smacking his horse with a crop. What could
this horse possibly have learned? Nothing, except to fear his
rider, and he surely would miss that lead again.
It doesn’t matter if you are in the show ring or on the trail, the release of
pressure must be instant, thus providing the reward for the horse.
Horsey Treat Recipe
April showers are here! Shower your favorite mare
with this recipe called:
Mare's Delight
In a big bowl, mix:
6 cups bran
2 cups oatmeal
2 cups cracked corn
4-6 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tblsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs
16 oz. sweetened apple juice
2/3 cup molasses
6 tblsp. corn oil
Then just roll the dough into one- or two-inch balls and bake at 300o
for 25 minutes or until they are dry and crisp. (The dough is very sticky
-- it helps to dip your hands in water periodically while handling it.)
