Volume 3, Number 8
Hello, Friends!
It seems as though it has been longer than 2 weeks since talking to
you. However, the cold and wet weather we have experienced the last eleven days
has sure added to making it feel that long. The four inches of wet snow that
fell on my tent Friday night really sent this past winter out with a bang. After
feeling like I made it through Friday night without high winds, I had no idea
that my tent would collapse because of snow. It was completely destroyed.
However, despite losing my tent, we had a Super Grand Opening at Premier Farm
and Ranch near Raymore, MO. It was great to see everyone. Congratulations to
Sara Peterman from Cleveland, MO for winning the riding mower!
“Like father, like son” . . . yesterday, I had a great time with my 10-year-old son, Brent. Brent and I took advantage of the great weather and went for a nice ride. As we were coming close to the end of the ride, I heard some extreme splashing. When I looked back there was Peppy and Brent in the middle of a pretty good pool of water and Peppy was pawing the water. Fearing the horse was ready to roll, I hollered “kick, kick, kick!” Thinking he was in a serious situation, Brent did his father’s “Preventative Medicine” method and launched himself off the horse right in the water. His horse just stood there wondering, what is he doing. What a great time we had yesterday!
I know several of you that have subscribed to Better Horses Network have not yet received your copy. We are presently looking into that and feel confident the problem will be resolved. If you have not received the Spring Edition, make sure you pick it up at your local Purina Dealer. Don’t forget to attend one or both of the Equine Marketing meetings coming up next week. On the 24th of April we will be at Heritage Tractor in Topeka and on Wednesday, April 25th we will be at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner. It will be a very informative and fun evening, details are below in the Calendar section.
Also, make sure you mark your calendar for Saturday, May 5th. Y Bar H Outpost & Pet, formerly Lloyds Dog & Horse, will have their Grand Opening on that day. Make sure you come in and see the new look, specials, and new stuff they are handling. Information is below.
The Ellsworth, Kansas Ranch Horse Rodeo and Ranch Horse Competition scheduled for this past weekend has been rescheduled for this coming weekend at the fairgrounds in Ellsworth, KS.
Since last talking to you, I have had the chance to attend an American Royal Rodeo committee meeting. They really have a lot of exciting things planned for 2007. I am looking forward to being a part of it.
If you have not tried Strategy or one of our feeds, make sure that you get in touch with me, your local Purina Rep., or your dealer and let us set you up on a Feeding Trial. I always preached our research and development along with our FeedGuard (Quality Control Program) is what separates us from the competition. If you have the opportunity to go through one of our Dealerships who have utilized our Premier Services retail development program, like Premier Farm & Ranch near Raymore or the new Y Bar H in Olathe, that will show you how we are heads and tails above all the rest when it comes to the retail feed business. Along with these great stores, we have a tremendous team of core Purina Dealers in the area that are committed to serve you and I am proud to be a part of them. Let me or your local Purina Dealer know if we can be a help to you and your animals.
Take care and I will talk to you in a couple of weeks!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

NEED YOUR HELP!
Please help Terry & Chuck Southard of Louisburg, KS if you can . . . During the night of Thursday, March 29, two people went in their barn and stole two saddles. One is a Billy Cook roper, 16" seat and matching equipment and the other is a lightweight pleasure saddle with lots of buckstitching approximately 15 years old. The Southards can identify both items. A report was made with the Miami County Sheriff, and the Southards were told that there is a group out there stealing saddles and taking them to Oklahoma and Texas. There is a reward for anyone who has information leading to the return of the equipment. If you have any information, please contact Terry or Chuck Southard, 13515 W. 247th Street, Louisburg, KS. Call (913) 879-2291 (home; (913) 284-1372 (cell); or (913) 888-1955 (office).

Horse Management Tip
To Scratch 0r Pat
Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
You see it all the time; a horse has done something that his rider is pleased
with. Won a ribbon or reacted correctly to a command, then the rider will slap
the horse on the neck conveying that the horse has done a good job. But, what is
the horse really thinking? Did I do something wrong, because I get slapped when
I do something bad? Watch what horses do when out together in the pasture. They
stand head to tail scratching each other’s withers. It’s one way of showing
comfort and pleasure because it feels good.
Next ime your horse makes you happy with something he has done, try scratching
his withers or neck to let him know that you are happy with what he has just
accomplished. He will thank you for it, and it may clear up some confusion on
his part about if he just did something good or bad.
Horsey Treat Recipe
Spring has sprung! Time to breathe the fresh air and spend a
great spring day with your horse!
In celebration of spring, prepare these cookies as a special treat for your
favorite horse!
Sweet Feed Cookies
1 cup sweet feed
2 cups bran
1 cup flax seed
4 lg. carrots, shredded
1 cup molasses
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup applesauce
Preheat oven to 300oF. Mix molasses, brown sugar, carrots and
applesauce in one bowl. In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients.
Slowly combine the molasses mixture with the dry ingredients. Add only
enough molasses mixture to form a thick dough; add more bran if necessary.
Line cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Using a tablespoon, drop batter onto
cookie sheet and flatten slightly to form portions about the size of a silver
dollar. Bake for about one hour, flip and bake for an additional 45
minutes -- until they are dried out. (Keep checking to make sure they
don't burn.)
