January 7, 2008
Volume 4, Number 1

Hello, Friends!

I am writing this message to you the morning of my second day of pheasant hunting in North Central Kansas. Part of my 2008 New Year's Resolution is to make sure that I take time to utilize my vacation days with my company and to take time to enjoy some of things I like to do. Yesterday morning, as I began the day trouncing through 10 inches of melting snow through fields of milo chasing pheasants, I continued to ask myself if I was having fun yet. Throughout the first day of hunting, I came to the conclusion that I need to expand on my New Year's Resolution and that is, I need to get in better shape! As far as giving all of you a report, we got five birds the first day along with seeing plenty of birds. This trip has been really great spending time with my friends Brent Wright, John Duckworth, and folks from Priefert.

We are getting geared up for the 2008 Horse Owner Workshops to be held in the area. Make sure you check our website at www.betterhorsesnetwork.com along with the calendar on this publication for upcoming events and activities. We are working on some real neat events that we plan to hold this year.

One of these events includes putting on the First Annual Spring Dream Ride In The Flint Hills at the Flying W Ranch this May 2,3,& 4, near Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. If you are interested in joining us for this great weekend, call Suzan Barnes at the Grand Central Hotel in Cottonwood Falls at 620/273-6763.

Our 2008 Stallion Edition of the Better Horses Network publication will be coming out in Mid-February. The deadline for ads is January 18th. If you are interested in running an ad, give me a call at 785/418-6047 or call Anna Newman at 866/655-7100.

Don’t miss our Horseman’s Priority Clinic this Feb.2nd & 3rd at the Kansas ExpoCentre in Topeka, Kansas. Check out the information in the calendar section in this issue.

Also, there are still 15 – 12 foot Priefert Utility Panels available to purchase from me that were left over from this year’s World Championship Extreme Cowboy Race that was held at the Saddle & Sirloin in Kansas City last November. They are brand new and are for sale at $75/panel. A tremendous price!

Daylight is approaching for me, and I guess it is time for me to take my Ibuprofen and head out for the second day of pheasant hunting. Let me know if I can be of help in anyway and hope to see you later.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Hat Tip

Have you ever wondered how riders keep their hats on their head either on a windy day or during competition?

In many equine events, there are hat fines if you lose your hat during competition. The ever-popular stampede strings are very wonderful products and if they are installed correctly in your hat, will offer a good secure hold on your hat. I do have another little trick that will help you hold your hat on if you don’t have stampede strings. Your hat needs to fit fairly good and not too loose on your head for this to work. Take a piece of vet wrap, approximately 4-8 inches long and fold it in thirds. Lay it inside your hat between the hat and the leather liner in your forehead area. While your hat fits very snug with this in place, it also acts as a cushion to provide a more comfortable fit with your hat on this snug. Adjust the size of vet wrap you use for how tight you need your hat to fit. You may find wearing your hat this tight for extended period may cause a severe headache . . . but for short-term purposes, it really works!

Ride safely,

Horsey Treat Recipe

Horse Muffins

1 whole apple, finely chopped
1/4 cup water
2 carrots, finely chopped
1/8 cup maple syrup or regular syrup
(if using regular syrup, use a little less)
1 cup cooking oats

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl (the mixture should be sticky but not very sticky)
Use a muffin or "cupcake" pan and grease it (flouring it is better for the horses) and put about 1½ spoons of the mixture in each compartment.  Spread evenly and pack down.  Bake for about 10 minutes at 425o.  Turn off oven and leave treats in oven.  Do not take treats out of the oven until the oven is completely cool or they will get mushy!

A special winter treat . . . for that very special horse of yours!

Thoughts To Ponder

By Charley Green

New Year's Resolution

I called my brother, Hank, the other night and asked if there was anything new, interesting or exciting going on in his life.  Hank replied, "No, and that's exactly the way I like it.  I want things to stay the way they are."

Not everybody wants things to stay the way they are.  For instance, if 2007 was just an average or ordinary year for you personally and you want 2008 to be better, then you've got to make a change in your thinking and doing.  You can't be satisfied with being just ordinary . . . so let go of average kind of thinking and doing and get going on becoming exceptional . . . because the success you want in 2008 won't happen until you start playing in the league of the extraordinary.
