Volume 4, Number 3

Hello, Friends!

In order to get this to you by this week I am having to write this on Friday. Wow! Where did January go? Even though we sure can get a lot more Winter, we are one month closer to Spring. I am attending the Purina Retail Expo this week in Palm Springs, California and a highlight of the trip is I get to spend some time with our son, Luke. He is stationed close by with the Marines and is scheduled to be going back to Iraq soon. So this is a real bonus getting to spend some time with him.

Our Stallion Edition is coming out in just a couple of days, and I hope that you like it. Make sure that you try to attend one of our HOW Meetings this year. We are starting the equine education series off with a week of Dale Myler Bit Clinics beginning Feb.17th and going through the next Saturday, Feb.23rd. Make sure you check out the calendar for the details. Also our 2-Day Reining Clinic on May 31st and June 1, with Brent Wright and Shawn Flarida is almost sold out for the riding part. As of the time I am writing this, I think we have 14 slots filled out of our 20-rider limit. Make sure you check out the details and give Susan Bershauer a call at (913) 837-8253.

I want to thank all of the clinicians that made last week’s 5th Annual Horseman’s Priority Clinic such a success. This is a great event that involves a lot of great horsemen who are great people. Thanks to you and thanks to our great sponsors for making it such a success.

With grain and feed prices going through the roof, there is not a better time to feed Purina. When you look at cost/head/day along with delivering top performance, Purina feeds will win out. For those of you who are feeding our program, I would like to thank you. And for those of you who are not feeding with Purina, we would love a chance to show you what it can do for your horses.

If you would like to get our Better Horses Network Publication, you can go to our website at www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and subscribe on-line. Also check out our Radio Show at www.betterhorsesradio.com.

I wish you a good week, and I hope to see you real soon!

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Need Your Help -- Stolen Horses!    We have some stolen horses in Oklahoma.  The young woman who owns the horses was gone for cancer treatment when the mares were stolen from her pasture near Stillwater, OK on January 26th.  A sad situation that we hope spreading the word will help.  Please check both these flyers and if anyone has any information -- please contact the Sheriff's department in Payne County or Lynne Neveu as shown on the flyers.

Horse Management Tip

Getting Your Horse Enough Exercise

This winter it’s been very hard to get horses rode and exercised with all of the winter weather. I have several horses in stalls this winter because our outside run pens are too wet and messy. Their turnout time is in the arena, and they love it. They run and play and play some more—even in all of the mud and snow.

A word of caution, though--if you decide to go for a winter ride when you haven’t been riding—even when your horse is turned outside in a small run area, they really don’t have the freedom to really run and play. If you have a bigger safe area where you can turn them out for even more play time—take the time to do that before the ride. Then—warm them up on a longe line even more. Make sure you have all the play and vigor out of them before taking off on that ride. It will be worth your time and make that winter ride fun and enjoyable if you don’t have to “ride the buck out” of your horse.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Want to teach that little foal to eat out of your hand?  Try this special treat . . .

Foal Treats

Mash an apple or puree a carrot (or combine together)
Add 1 tablespoon molasses
Mix thoroughly
While someone holds the foal, use your fingers to rub the mixture on its lips and gums.  Soon the foal will literally be eating out of your hand!

Thoughts To Ponder

By Charley Green

Cutting to the Chase

Lessons on how some folks view success often show up in unexpected ways.  One time I was taking a new client from the airport to a very prestigious part of town.  This man obviously was a person of some influence and success as it became very clear in his attitude how he felt about money and people.  He was on his cell phone talking with one of his friends and responded to a comment made on the other end of the conversation saying, "You're right.  It's the way you and I think is the reason we make millions, and the rest of them remain idiots!"

Ouch!  Regardless of the arrogance, it's tough to swallow when you realize your level of success has everything to do with your way of thinking.
