Volume 4, Number 6

Hello, Friends!

Although it seems as though we can’t get things to dry up around here, the good news is we don’t have to break ice. It was good to see many of you at Missouri’s HorseFest a week ago. That event keeps getting better every year.

We have a lot of neat events coming up in the next couple of weeks. All of these are in the calendar in this newsletter. Don’t forget to attend the taping of Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race next week at the Saddle & Sirloin Club in Kansas City, on March 25th & 26th. Then on the 26th come on down to Pleasant Hill, MO that evening and attend Pleasant Hill Pet & Livestock’s Purina HOW Event involving Equine Marketing with Mid America Sales out of Carthage, MO. We will have the same meeting on March 27th in Spring Hill, Kansas with Farmers Union Co-Op.

Then on March 29th, we will be holding a HOW meeting at the Douglass County Fairgrounds in Lawrence, KS with Todd Wright among other clinicians. At the same time over east at the Saddle & Sirloin Club in Kansas City, they have great horseman, Phil Haugen, coming in for two days of clinics and seminars. Personally, I have signed up for the riding clinic with Phil on Sunday, March 30th. They still have a couple of slots available so sign up and come over and join us. It will be a great time. He is one of the best!

I want to thank all of you who attended the Dale Myler Bit & Bitting Clinics. The turnout was tremendous at each one of them.

May is just around the corner, and we would love for you to join us for the First Annual Spring Dream Ride in the Flint Hills. We have plenty of room and we will have a great ride. The ride is May 2, 3, & 4th at the Flying W Ranch near Cottonwood Falls, KS.  I hope you can make it.

As we speak, I am putting together the final pieces of the Spring Edition of the Better Horses Network publication. Our mailing list has reached 25,000 horse owners, and it keeps growing. We sure have a lot of Equine Events coming up that are real exciting. You definitely will want to mark your calendars for the weekend of Oct.23rd thru Saturday, Oct.25th. That is when the American Royal will host their 2nd year of the American Royal PRCA Pro Rodeo the “Home Of The Prairie Circuit Finals”. Besides four PRCA Rodeos going on at that time, the American Royal PRCA Rodeo will be hosting an exciting equine event, the “Unbelievable Horse Happening”.  Make sure you pick up your copy of the Better Horses Spring Edition and learn more about it.

I hope that all of you have a Happy Easter. Let us not forget the true meaning of Easter and that is our Savior, Jesus Christ, died for our sins and has risen.

Let me know if I can be of help.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

The Trail of Least Resistance

The saying, "less is more," is true when we are trying to teach our horse something new.  Sometimes we may expect too much too quickly and push our horse too fast and too hard.  We just assume that our horse is on the same page of the program as we are, when they may not have even agreed to read the book in the first place.  So we push harder and ask more of him because we think he's lazy, ornery or just plain dumb.  Then we really have a resentful, unhappy and sour horse to deal with.  It goes back to "less is more".  Always ask less of him and if he gives you just a little, treat it as if it were more and build from there.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Try this special Easter treat  for your favorite horse:

          Bunny Cookies

Ingredients:
Dry Mix
10 cups flour
1-2/3 cups instant non-fat dry milk
1/3 cup baking powder
2-1/2 tsp. salt
1-2/3 cups shortening
1 or 2 carrots, coarsely grated
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup sugar (optional)

Combine dry ingredients in a large Tupperware container that can be covered and refrigerated.  Add shortening and mix with a blender until mix looks like fine crumbs.  It will last 3 months in the fridge.  Take 3 cups Dry Mix, 1 or 2 carrots coarsely grated, 2/3 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar (optional).  Preheat oven to 425o.  Combine Dry Mix, carrots and sugar in large bowl; gradually add water to make dough soft, but not sticky.  Knead dough on a floured board about 15 times.  Divide roll in half and roll each section out flat, about 1/4 inch thick.  Cut with a bunny cookie cutter and bake about 10 mins. until lightly browned . . . a special Easter treat for a special horse!

Thoughts To Ponder

By Charley Green

Stress

Different folks handle stress in various ways.  Some accept it as a way of life, some as an excuse to avoid the real issue causing their stress and others as motivation to get something done.  For instance, I remember when a young man asked my Dad how he handled stress in his day.  Dad told the young man he'd been too busy taking care of his family and putting food on the table to worry about such nonsense as stress.  Now that puts it in perspective, doesn't it?

Dad handled stress by doing what he needed to do.  He didn't take on unnecessary work or let unimportant things get on his shoulders.  He could say "no" if it was going to interfere with his family responsibilities or putting food on the table.
