Volume 5, Number 16

Good Morning!

I hope all is well with everyone. We have so much going on this fall it seems difficult to keep up with it all. Our son, Luke, and daughter-in-law, Jonel, were back last week before his tour in Afghanistan. We had such a good time with them and Luke’s two little brothers. It was a weekend of shooting clay pigeons, fishing, and spending great time together. Please keep him, along with all the other servicemen and women in your prayers.

I was able to attend the Missouri Fox Trotting Horses World Championships in Ava, Missouri a week ago and had a great time. We met a lot of great folks . Where else can I go work a show and take off on the show grounds for a two hour trail ride?

Congratulations goes to Bev King of Ottawa, Kansas on winning the $2000 Added Open Class at the NRHA Tulsa slide a couple of weeks ago. She had a tremendous run!

There is still time to sign up and join us for our 10th Annual Dream Ride In The Flint Hills this coming weekend at the Flying W Ranch near Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. It is going to be a great time. Call me at 785/418-6047 or Suzan at the Grand Central Hotel at 620/273-6763 if interested in joining us.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Oct.22nd thru Oct.25th to attend the American Royal for the great Western Weekend. We have the following going on that weekend:

        1. American Royal Pro Rodeo- PRCA Prairie Circuit Finals.
        2. Two Great Concerts following the Rodeo on Friday and Saturday nights- Pat Green and Sara Evans.
        3. The Unbelievable Horse Happening—The largest Open Horse Show Around!
        4. American Royal Equine & Ranch Expo- First Annual Colt Challenge with Kerry Kuhn, Cindy Branham, and Cal Noyons.

This weekend at the American Royal will be UNBELIEVABLE!!!

We still have some room left on the buses that will be taking us on our “Amarillo By Morning” bus trip to the WRCA’s World Championship Ranch Rodeo on Nov.12,13,14, & 15. If you are interested on joining over 100 of us for a great weekend give me a call at 785/418-6047 or email me at ernie@betterhorsesradio.com .

Better Horses Radio has now expanded into Texas with the initial airing of our show being this Sunday at 7:00am on Country Legends 92.1FM radio station in Fort Worth. We had a blast taping an interview with World Champion Bull Rider, Justin McBride. His interview will air on the weekend of October 3rd & 4th.

The positive results we continue to get from our feed trials keep rolling in. Now is a great time to try Purina products if you are not already on them. Go to www.purinadifference.com and sign up for a test. You can call me at 785/418-6047 or email me at ernie@betterhorsesradio.com, and I would be glad to help show you what Purina Can Do For Your Horses!

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you, and I hope to run into you soon.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

                                The Right Approach

I can’t remember if I used this tip taken from Al Dunning’s book,
Al Dunning-The Ultimate Level of Horsemanship. If I did I think
it is worth hearing again. You can order this great book by going
       to www.aldunningsadtack.com.

When approaching a horse, never be loud or quick in your move-
ments. Remember when you meet a horse for the first time, the
horse is sizing you up also. Don’t position your body in a threatening
position, but approach him calmly and with confidence and gain his
respect from the get-go. If you can, it’s best to let the horse first come
to you out of his own curiosity rather than approaching him at all.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Try this fall treat for your favorite horse –
can be made into cookies or cut into
     brownie-type servings . . .

Chargers Crunchies

Ingredients:

    3 cups pelleted horse grain
(soaked in 3-4 cups of water until mush, 1-2 hours)
1 cup bran or cornmeal or alfalfa meal
    1 cup molasses
    1 cup brown sugar
    1 cup corn oil
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tblsp. salt
    2-4 cups flour

Mix all ingredients except flour. Then add flour (or oatmeal) 1 cup at a time until mixture is very doughy. Take a softball size amount of dough and roll out
on a floured surface until ˝ inch thick. (If you are looking for wheat-free, use cornmeal or oat flour.)

Use cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Decorate or top with cracked corn, crimped oats or crushed peppermint. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 325o until
dry. For the more time-constrained, place in large shallow brownie pan or large cookie sheet, decorate, score and bake.

Thoughts To Ponder

                       By Charley Green

                                       Residual Income

When in Monte Carlo, Will Rogers observed the benefits casinos contributed to the
         sovereignty, which ruled this principality.

       T
he old prince
(of Monaco) has got a great business.  It works while he sleeps.

                                                                            - Will Rogers

Will didn't rely on just his stage performances for income, especially when other opportunities
presented themselves.  He ventured into the movie business, keynote and after-dinner

speaking, radio shows and syndicated news columns.  If one area began to falter, his other

endeavors would help pick up the slack.  A great example of creating multiple sources of

income as a way of keeping beans on the table, clothes on the kids and money in the bank.

When I was in the construction business a number of years ago, one of the subcontractors

owned a backhoe business for trenching and footing work.  Talking with him one day, I

asked what he did for income when the weather or economy was bad and he couldn't work.

       He said,

"Well, I own a small trailer park in addition to my trenching business.
I keep the park in good shape, fully rented; and every morning, rain or
shine, when my feet hit the floor, that old trailer park deposits a net one
hundred dollars on my door step.  It requires a little extra work, but it
pays off, and the profits go into my rainy day account."

Having money coming in while one is sleeping or away doing other meaningful things makes
"cents" to me, especially when it involves vacationing, shopping, fishing or
hunting -- not necessarily in that order.
