Volume 2, Number 10
Howdy!
I am running late getting this message written for this newsletter. I just woke up this Sunday afternoon from what seems like a “coma” after eating a wonderful fried chicken, potatoes & gravy, creamed corn, & all that wonderful stuff that my lovely wife, Connie, fixed for Mother’s Day. I know what you are thinking, “Why didn’t that Ernie take his wife out for Mother’s Day?” I really would have, but she wanted to do this for her mother and we all got to enjoy the wonders of her homemade fried chicken dinner. The way it hit me after eating it, I would almost accuse her of “drugging” the gravy.
We had three wonderful clinics last week with Scott Dailey from Arkansas City, Kansas. Scott did a super job of showing his techniques in starting the young horse. My hat goes off to Doug Putnum and Todd Wright who did clinics at these events also. They all did a super job.
This coming 10 days will be “crunch time” in getting my 2006 Summer Issue of the Checkerboard Corral done. If any of you are interested in placing an ad in this issue, contact Connie at 785/242-8555 or myself at 785/418-6047. This is an excellent way to advertise to the horse community. We are now mailing this publication to over 21,000 horse owners in the area.
We are so fortunate to be able to “partner up” with www.barrelhorseworld.com and www.horsetrailerworld.com . Dave and Gail Mattern who own these sites are great folks and plan to get more involved in our events. Also, they are just getting up and started www.workinghorseworld.com . This is going to be another huge site covering everything from reining, cutting, working cow horses, ranch horses, etc., etc. We always talk about “Taking Your Horse Experience To A Higher Level." Teaming up with Dave and Gail and their websites will definitely take a huge role in helping make this happen.
We had a great weekend in which my son Brent and I were able to do some riding on Saturday and Sunday. After riding on Saturday, we put a fire in our “fire ring,” and the family and I sat around that evening eating a little pizza and listening to some “cowboy music” by TJ Casey.
Speaking of Cowboy Music, make sure you mark your calendars to attend the 3rd Annual Old West Cowboy Days in Ottawa. It is going to be held this June 24 & 25 at Forest Park in Ottawa, Ks. Go to our website at www.checkerboardcorral.com and click Old West Cowboy Days. Bring your horses and ride in the parade!
The Strategy and Ultium proof keeps rolling in! If you would like to take the “Purina Challenge,” get in touch with me and let us show you “What the Checkerboard Can Do For You!”
Take care and I will be talking to you in a couple of weeks. Let me know if I can be of help.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
A Promise to Your Horse
How often do you blame your horse for his not doing as you ask? You may say he’s stupid or mean or that he doesn’t listen to you. We are quick to blame the horse when the problem lies with the human. Leave a horse alone and he never has a problem. He’s a horse and he deals with things in a horse manner.
Be honest now, how often do we up the pressure when something is not working instead of backing off, starting over and thinking who really is at fault here?
The next time your horse doesn’t respond as you want, promise your horse that you will stop, start over and perhaps ask him in a different way what you want him to do. He may not have understood the first time just what you were asking of him. Promise him that when he does do it as you wish that you will reward him for each try with a release from the pressure. Promise him that you will do your best to learn his language.
