June 5, 2006
Volume 2, Number 11

Hi folks!  I hope all is well with all of you. I am hurrying out of here to get down to the Flint Hills Rodeo in Strong City. Good News! It doesn’t look like they are going to have to put up with the monsoon rains this year.

You should be getting our Summer Issue within the next few days, and I hope you enjoy it. I would like to invite you to join us for the 3rd Annual Old West Cowboy Days that will be held in Ottawa this June 24th & 25th. Purina and John Deere are the major sponsors of this event and it is packed full of neat stuff for two days along with some great Western Music. I need help in getting folks to represent the horse industry in the parade. The parade will Kick-off the event on Saturday morning at 10:00. We will again be driving 80+ head of cattle through downtown Ottawa. Give me a call to get in the parade 785/418-6047.  We need to make this a big one!

Our radio show is growing since the last time I talked to you. We are now being aired in Ocala, Florida, Lexington, Kentucky, Sacramento, CA, and possibly Houston. I need to make you aware we are in the process of changing our name. The radio show is now called “Better Horses” Radio and you will see within the next few months us slowly changing the electronic newsletter, and our publication to “Better Horses”. Our new website will be www.betterhorsesnetwork.com, but for now it will stay www.checkerboardcorral.com . With the radio station going cross-country so quick and the direction my company (Purina Mills) is going, it was a better fit to make this change. It will be all the same content, folks, events, just a different name. I really believe you will like what will be coming down the line in the future.

I appreciate those of you who are doing business with us and those of you who are not, we would sure like to team up with you. If you are interested in taking the Purina Challenge and give our horse feed a try, e-mail us and we will get you a coupon to try it. You will see the difference. Be watching for our Horseman’s Edge promotion that is coming out. Horseman’s Edge is our line of sweet feeds and pelleted feed that will fall between Strategy/Omolene line and our Country Acres Line. It will have more fortification than our Country Acres, but not at the level Omolene and Strategy will have.

I am going to sign off for now. Let me know if there is anyway I can be of help.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Helping Your Youth Rider Get Direction

I always remind our riding students that no matter how old you are whether you are 3 or 83, that while you are working with a horse or riding a horse, you are training your horse. You might not be training them good things, but you are definitely training your horse whenever you are horseback or even handling them on the ground.

Often, we see younger riders hop on their horses and go here and there and nowhere in between. They ride, but they are riding aimlessly and usually their horses are making most of the decisions such as which direction they are headed, what speed and sometimes whether they will even go forward or not. You can help your youth rider become a better horseman by simply helping them “map out” a riding plan. Give them some destinations, some exercises, a plan in riding. Set up some cones, barrels or landscape ties to walk across or through. Help them make a warm-up routine that they can enjoy with their horse and, very soon, you have a young rider who is training their horse the “correct” way to go where they are asked to go. Direction and that the rider should be making all of the decisions are two of the most important things they need to learn. These exercises not only help the horse, but they are teaching the rider to look up where they are going—make a plan where you want your horse to go and then do what it takes to get them there.

Here’s an idea to use the next time your child chooses to ride. Set up 2 barrels or cones, approximately 75 feet apart. Add a couple cones approximately 20’ off to either side of the pattern. Start the rider doing a circle around one of the barrels asking them to stay the same distance from the barrel all the way around (approximately 20 feet). Doing this small exercise is the beginning of learning perfect circles—a very important part of the training process for any horse. After they have circled that barrel several times, ask them to head to the next barrel and turn it the opposite direction. They can turn that barrel several times and then head for the cones and weave through them back up to the first barrel they turned. They need to do this several times until they can gain control and direction in their horse. Once they have completed the exercise, then send them off and ride for fun. Change the exercise pattern often for a young child so that it is fun.

Help your child learn direction and plans in their riding—no matter their age. They are sure to have fun doing it.
