Volume 2, Number 12

Hi, Folks!   I hope all is well with everyone. I am in the middle of putting together this week’s 3rd Annual Old West Cowboy Days in Ottawa held on June 24 & 25th. If you get a chance I would love to see you at this event. Kerry Kuhn is going to do a colt starting clinic on both days along with two days full of neat stuff. The Western Music in the park and at the concert on Saturday night is going to be tremendous. Also, if you want to join us for the cattle drive and parade on Saturday, give me a call at 785/418-6047. Check out the event on www.oldwestcowboydays.com .

Last week my family and I made the trip to Bruner, Missouri to attend the 2nd Annual Memorial Family Rodeo for Brianna Walker. Vinecia and her team did a super job of putting on a great event.

My summer has started off at a pretty fast pace, spending quite a few evenings during the week at the ball fields. Matthew and Brent seem to be really enjoying the summer. By now most of you should have received your “Summer Issue” of the Checkerboard Corral. I hope you have enjoyed it.

Last week I traveled to Florida to visit some of our new “Premier Stores”. Wow! Are they impressive. These stores are to the Equine & small acreage community, what Bass Pro and Cabellas are to the fishing and hunting community.

Our radio program continues to grow, with Houston, Texas starting the show on July 2nd. Along with being on seven stations in Kansas and Missouri, we are now in Lexington, KY, Ocala, FL, & Modesto/Sacramento, CA.

Congratulations to all of the contestants of the Kansas High School Rodeo Finals! You did a super job last week in Topeka. It was great to see everyone.

We are still getting tremendous response on the results of our Ultium and Strategy. If you would like to try any of our products, get in touch with me and we will set you up on a feeding trial.

Let us know if we can be of any help to you or your group. With Purina Products, along with our newspaper, electronic newsletter, radio and events, we can team up together and “take your horse experience to a higher level”.

I will talk to you in a couple of weeks.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Your Space or His?

I’m sure you have heard the expression “keep the horse out of your space”. Just what and where is your space? Well, for your safety, it’s about two to three feet around you, causing an unseen barrier between you and your horse. So why do we need this barrier anyway? If you have ever been stepped on or bumped in the face with your horse’s head, you will know why we need to protect this space with our lives.

If a horse does step on you or bump you with his head or move his shoulder or hip into this space, he is doing so because he has absolutely no respect for you or your silly space. OK, this is fine if you really don’t care about being bumped and stepped on, but to the horse every time he does one of these things he is reinforcing in his own mind that he is the leader and you had better stay out of his way, or else.

Actually, this is really not a happy horse. Horses want a leader and since he is not running free with the alpha mare telling the herd what they can and cannot do, and to mind their manners, you are your horse’s leader and if you want to stop the bumps and sore toes you had better start acting like one.

Make your horse stay out of your space by reminding him with an elbow or a shake on the lead rope that he is to remember that you are the leader and he is not to enter into your sacred space unless invited.
