July 3, 2006
Volume 2, Number 13
Hello to Everyone!
I hope that you are enjoying (or enjoyed if this gets to you after the 4th) the fourth of July weekend. The summer has officially been declared here with myself getting to enjoy my first homegrown sweet corn. I think I foundered myself.
We just finished up our 3rd Annual Old West Cowboy Days in Ottawa last weekend. It was a huge success beginning with the Cattle Drive and Parade on Saturday. The Western Music was great along with the horse activities! I hope many of you made it.. With Josh, Gwen, & Newt being there with their rig from the Flying W Ranch it really made the event “authentic”. Also thanks to John King and his family for bringing their beautiful 6-Horse Hitch of Clydesdales to participate in the parade and have on display representing Rocky Ridge Clydesdales out of Odessa, MO.

Keeping you up-to-date with happenings going on with Purina Mills, we are kicking off our “Horsemen’s Edge promotion”. This will be an excellent opportunity to up-grade from our Country Acres products. It is more fortified than our Country Acres Sweet 12 and has more fat and calories. The price will be good and the product will perform. Be watching for the details of this promotion at your local Purina dealer. Also if you want to raise the level of fat and calories on your rations, Purina has come out with “Amplify” a 30% fat, and very low starch supplement. The fat is derived from vegetable oil, flax seed, and rice bran. Amplify is the patented nugget found in our Equine Senior and Ultium. The positive testimonials keep coming in with Ultium and Strategy! If you are interested in giving our products a try, give me a call or e-mail. Remember, Purina Mills is the only company, that “will feed their feed to their horses first, before we ask you to feed it to yours”.
We are making a lot of positive changes with our Radio, Publication, and Electronic Newsletter. Plans are to have our name changed to “Better Horses”. Our radio show has made the change to “Better Horses” and we look for the rest of the operation to be changed by Sept.1. When you see where Purina Mills is bringing to us, you will have a better understanding of why the change.
I am looking forward to traveling with the “Best Of America By Horseback” team to ride in the Yukon. We will be leaving by ship from Seattle and traveling by boat to Alaska. I look forward to this opportunity. For now I need to sign off and go to the Dressage Show in Kansas City where we are serving barbeque. Let me know if there is anyway I can be of a help. Enjoy the summer!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Ear Watching
Most of us do a lot of chattering to our horses, saying things like “what a good boy”, “atta boy” and various other things to communicate our commands and wishes to them. Our verbal talk to them is natural for us humans; it’s our way of communication with other humans. However, from your horse’s viewpoint, usually the only “talk” he understands are the commands conveyed by your body through direct contact, posture and gestures. During this physical conversation from us, he will be speaking to us as well. Watch his ears.
A horse that is paying attention to the rider will have his ears in neutral, just cocked a little toward the back so as to listen to the rider. The horse will tend to turn his ears toward the focus of his attention, whether it is the pressure of your leg or the shifting of your weight. The forward pricked ears are certainly not focusing on you or your commands. Although a horse with ears forward is a far prettier picture than one who has his ears focused on the rider.
Years ago when I was showing 5-gaited Saddlebreds, the trainer would dilate the horse’s eyes making him boogie at his own shadow. The idea, of course, was to get him to carry his ears forward and look bright eyed and bushy tailed. And since he couldn’t see very well he was listening for anything that might harm him. I always felt a little relieved that I was still in the saddle when we came out of the ring.
It helps to understand how horses hear. They, like us, have binaural hearing, which means they can hear sound concurrently. However, the horse’s ears are much larger and act as if you were to cup your hand to your ear to gather more sound. He also has the ability to hear a wider range of high-frequency tones. When you are riding and he spooks for no apparent reason, it may be from something that he hears and not something he sees. This is the hearing of a prey animal. He can hear the slightest snap of a twig from under a big cat’s paw and take flight before the prey animal is ever seen.
So, watch his ears, they will tell you where his mind is, “because where his mind is, is where he will be”.
