Volume 2, Number 14

Howdy to everyone! I am trying to get my bearings together after being gone for a week with the “Best Of America By Horseback” on their Alaska trip. The cruise and trip were great and the scenery was Unbelievable! I am writing this letter a day late and after my 45 exercise walk. I can’t understand that how is it that it takes me 60 days to take five pounds off and only seven days to put it back on?? Even though we came back to 100 degree heat, it still is great to get back home!

Don’t forget, for those folks that prefer feeding a sweet or textured feed, Purina is in full swing with their Horseman’s Edge Sweet 12 promotion. The formula has been improved by adding more fat and increasing the lysine along with a great price. Contact your local Purina dealer about the Buy 2 Get 2 Free promotion.

We have a lot of neat things happening in the area. Don’t forget to attend the Kansas Reining Horse Assn. 2006 Sunflower Slide which will be held Aug.24-27 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. Go to www.kansasreining.com for more information.

Also, you might want to attend the Cowboy Dressage Clinic by Eitan Beth-Halachmy which will be held at the Janet Green Stables/Liberty Meadows facility near Liberty, MO. Call Teresa Thompson at 816/750-4681 or go to www.chestnutacres.org. This will be Sept. 16-17 and will be very informative.

Make sure you plan to attend one of our Equine Health Days that will be held this fall. Keep on the lookout for a meeting scheduled this fall near you.

Look for a name change in the Fall Issue of the Checkerboard Corral. The new name will be Better Horses and the new website beginning Sept.1, 2006 will be www.betterhorsesnetwork.com. This will tie our publication, e-letter, events, and radio shows all together.

Our deadline for ads in the Fall Issue will be Aug.20th. Let me know if there is anything we can do for you to help raise your level of experience with your horse or horses! I will talk to you in a couple of weeks.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

ANGER: Leave it at home

By: Vicki Rhaesa

Humans have emotions. Some of our emotions are better than others. Unfortunately, anger, is one of our less appealing emotions that all of us have experienced at one time or another. From childhood to adulthood, we have all been angry! Since everyone is familiar with anger, then answering the following questions should be easy.

How do you feel on the inside when you are angry? How does your body appear on the outside when you are angry? I am sure your answers went something like this: you didn’t feel well on the inside and your outward body appearance was tense, tight and rigid. In detail, your eyes are hard, your jaw is tight and all of your upper and lower body parts are rigid. When your body is in this form, how can you feel your horse’s response to what you are trying to teach him? When someone is angry they don’t have a good feel of the horse. It doesn’t matter whether you are teaching him, ground work with a lead rope and halter or if you are in the saddle with reins in your hand, your feel for the timing is going to be late. There is a big difference between being firm and hard. There might be a need to be firm, but think of a soft firmness as opposed to a hard tightness with your arms and hands. Anger also makes humans REACT instead of RESPOND. There is a big difference between reacting and responding to a situation.

To everyone who has a good partnership with their horse, keep up the good work. If you have a less desirable partnership with your horse, please stop and ask yourself if ANGER could possibly be a factor. If you think anger might be an answer, just try leaving your anger at home…you might be surprised how much more you will feel!
