March 20, 2006
Volume 2, Number 6
Here it is Friday night, and I no longer have to worry about
myself getting all wrapped up into the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The
Jayhawks fixed that for me!
I am really looking forward to this week to spend some time with my wife and two
little boys who are home for spring break.
I need to share with you that I also hit a milestone in my life this past week.
Our son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Megan, gave us our first grandchild, Emma
Ann. I am also a grandpa now! I will have a picture for you in the next
newsletter.
We had a great two weeks being involved in seven Purina HOW meetings. We had
great turnouts at all of them. They involved Dale Myler Bit Clinics, Larry
Alcorn Arabians, Phil Solum with Mid-America Equine Sales, Countryside Vet
Clinic in Garnett, and a great workshop at the Diamond R Stables in Lees Summit.
This next week’s vacation I am looking forward to.
We still have plenty of room for the “Dream Ride In The Gypsum Hills”. This is
going to be a great time scheduled for the weekend of March 31, April 1 & 2.
Right now, we have about 40 riders signed up. This ride is a joint effort by
many of us to help support area writer and movie producer, Shannon Keenan, in
her upcoming project, Trail End. Barry Corbin, the leading actor in the movie,
is going to ride with us at the Gant-Larson Ranch and be our trail boss. He has
been in many movies and films including Northern Exposure and Lonesome Dove. See
the information in the calendar of this newsletter. It will be a great time with
beautiful riding, great food, entertainment, and clinics.
Don’t forget to join us on April 7th, 8th & 9th for the Teddy Robinson
demonstration and clinics. The dates were wrong in the last e-letter and these
are the correct dates. The demonstration for the public is Friday night at Fred Berschauer’s Performance Horse Training facility at the Eby Ranch near
Louisburg. You won’t want to miss this!
Anyone wanting to take a cruise to Alaska and ride the Yukon? Tom Seay and his
team from RFD TV’s Best Of America By Horseback has invited us to join him on a
cruise this July to Alaska with the opportunity to ride in Alaska’s beautiful
Yukon, July 8th-15th. It will be a 7-night round trip cruise on the Princess
Cruise Line from Seattle which involves a fishing trip and horseback riding in
the beautiful state of Alaska. Several of us are going including my wife and two
sons. It will be a GREAT TIME, and I hope you consider going with us!
All of you take care and let us know what we can do to help you. I will see you down the road.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Break Time
I see people working hard trying to make their horses perform better on a daily
basis. It doesn’t matter on the discipline or the goals you have for
your horse, but what does matter is when you take a break – give your horse a
break! I see people all the time ask their horse to stop; maybe talk to
a friend, answer their cell phone, or maybe the rider just needs to take a
break, yet they are constantly holding the reins tight or pulling back on the
reins the whole time they are stopped. This is not giving your horse a break. If
your horse does not know how to stand quiet on a loose rein, then holding the
reins tight constantly or pulling back on your reins will only make things worse
for him. A lot of the time your horse may be just showing anxiety, when you
stop, because he knows that those tight or busy hands of yours are going to be
causing him discomfort, therefore, he has nothing to look forward to when he
stops.
Remember: When you take a break – allow your horse to take a break!
