Volume 2, Number 8
Hello friends! I hope all of you enjoyed a great Easter weekend. I am getting ready to get geared up for about ten days of HOW meetings with our Craig Cameron Clinics coming up beginning on April 18th in Lawrence. Make sure you look at the calendar and plan to attend one or all of them. He and Dusty are a lot of fun to work with.
By now you should have received our Spring Edition of the Checkerboard Corral. I want to thank everyone who helped put it together. A special thanks goes out to Dana Mason, Sally Dwyer, and Jo Ann Riggs. They are the folks that put this Checkerboard Corral program all together.
Our Dream Round-up in the Flint Hills is coming up on the weekend of May 6 & 7 at the Division Ranch. We still have room for a few wranglers to enjoy this great weekend. By becoming an ambassador of the Flint Hills Rodeo, you have the opportunity to be a part of a great event. Give me a call if you would like to participate in this event. Last year’s event was absolutely one of the best times I ever had. Think about coming to this, and give me a call at (785) 418-6047.
This coming weekend try to make it to the “End Of The Trail” Ranch Rodeo Weekend in Ellsworth, KS. It is going to be a great time with Craig Cameron, Gary Pratt, Charlie Trayer, and Geff Dawson all being a part of it. Along with all of the great education and entertainment, you will get to see some great Ranch Rodeo along with Ranch Horse competition.
I want to thank all of you who are using Purina Products. We really appreciate it. For those of you who are not feeding Purina, we would love to have the opportunity to show you “What the Checkerboard can do for you." Purina Mills is the ONLY company that can say, “We feed it to our horses FIRST, before we ask you to feed it to yours”. Research is what makes the difference!.
Let me know what I can do to be of any help. I hope to see you soon!
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Catching a Horse in Pasture
If your horse comes to you in the pasture, he probably thinks you’re a pretty good deal. If not, let’s see if we can figure out why.
Horses like to be with other horses. They want to feel safe and comfortable, and they want to be able to eat when they want to. Some horses like to be brushed, and then some just like to be left alone.
That said, it’s easy to figure out what horses don’t like. Being uncomfortable, being afraid, being in pain, being away from other horses and not be able to eat grass when they want to.
So, what can you offer him? There must be a benefit for him to come to you. Can you meet his needs and desires in a way that will allow him to make the decision and choose you over his friends, his eating grass or just napping under a shade tree?
How do you approach him with the halter? Do you come at him in a hurried way and slap it on him; afraid he will walk away from you before you get it on? You might try not putting the halter on at all. Rub his neck or scratch his ears a time or two, then walk away without haltering him. Or, if you do get the halter on, take him to a nice quiet place and let him graze for a while. A horse can become real smart about associating you coming to get him and going right to work. Give him some nice quiet time; the work can come later.
You need to take time to let your horse realize that you are indeed a pretty good deal and he enjoys being with you.

Horsey Treat Recipe
April always brings April showers! Shower your favorite mare
with this recipe called:
Mare's Delight
In a big bowl, mix:
6 cups bran
2 cups oatmeal
2 cups cracked corn
4-6 cups flour
1 cup sugar
2 tblsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs
16 oz. sweetened apple juice
2/3 cup molasses
6 tblsp. corn oil
Then just roll the dough into one- or two-inch balls and bake at 300o
for 25 minutes or until they are dry and crisp. (The dough is very sticky
-- it helps to dip your hands in water periodically while handling it.)
