Volume 1, Number 4
We are in full swing with shows, futurities, trail rides, sales, and Purina meetings this fall. I hope everyone is doing fine. I am in the process of getting some help in the district with the hiring of Cindy Foster from Emporia. Many of you know Cindy from seeing her working at our trail rides and trade shows. She is responsible for many of the nice ads you see in the Checkerboard Corral which she has produced. She will be a great addition to the district.
Our radio show keeps growing by the week. It is great to have Dawn Dawson

I hope you are enjoying our Fall Edition of the Checkerboard Corral. If you see something we need to add to it or have an interesting story, give me a call.
We are really getting anxious to have our son, Luke, get home from Iraq. We have not heard from him in a few days but talked to his friend who recently spoke with him. That is good news. He should be home around the first of October.
If we can help with your feeding program, we would love to have the chance to work with you and have a chance to show “What The Checkerboard Can Do For You”.
Enjoy this fall and I hope to see you soon.
Happy Trails,
Ernie

Feeding Management Tip
Measure feed by weight, not volume. Although many people use the ubiquitous
“3-lb” coffee can to measure their horse feed, a coffee can of oats is not the
same amount of feed as a coffee can of corn! The can of oats may hold 2-4 lbs of
grain, while the can of corn is actually 4-5 lbs of corn. Further, since corn is
more calorie rich than oats, the can of corn may contain 2-3 times the energy as
the can of oats. Also, coffee cans come in different sizes. For instance, a can
that holds 2 lb 7 oz of coffee holds 4 lbs of Strategy or Ultium, but a can that
hold 2 lb 2.5 oz of coffee only holds 3 ¾ lbs of Strategy or Ultium. For only $5
to $10, the purchase of a fish scale may be one of the most important tools in
the barn. With the help of a plastic bag (I prefer a tall kitchen handle tie
garbage bag), the horse owner can measure not only the amount of feed in the
coffee can or the feed scoop, but also a flake of hay. Many horse owners have
never weighed their hay, and a flake of hay can weigh anywhere from 2 to 6 lbs.
It seems that the majority of horse owners feed a can of feed and two flakes of
hay twice a day to their horses, but when you start to weigh the feed and hay,
and take into account the calorie densities of the various feeds, there is a
large range of nutritional variations in this feeding schedule. To get a good
understanding of how well you are meeting your horse’s nutritional needs, you
must weigh the feed and hay.
If you want to run an ad in our Checkerboard Corral Publication
for the 2005 Winter Edition, we need it by 11/15/05. Our publication is in its
sixth year, and our circulation has exceeded 23,000, with over 20,000 mailed
directly to the horse owner. E-mail us or give me a call at 785/418-6047, and we
can give you the details.
Don’t forget, if you are interested in seeing what the Purina Program can do for
your horse, take the Purina Challenge. E-mail us, and I can get your Purina
representative in touch with you to match the right feeding program for your
horse or horses and TAKE THE CHALLENGE! When it comes to Equine Research, Purina
Mills is the company that can say, “WE FEED OUR FEED TO OUR HORSES, BEFORE WE
ASK YOU TO FEED IT TO YOURS!”
