Volume 1, Number 9

I hope all of you are doing well and had a nice Thanksgiving. I am sitting in my hotel room in Las Vegas attempting to get you updated on what is going on. Thanks to Rich Davis and Randy Miller of Brainstorm Media, Mark Scales, one of our equine specialists and I have the opportunity to do our “Checkerboard Corral COWBOY-UP DATE” from the NFR. It is a ten minute update of the NFR standings, interviews, and unbelievables that are going on in Las Vegas and is being broadcast from about twenty-five radio stations across the country. About fourteen of them are in Kansas, Missouri, & Nebraska, so be listening for it. I will list them in this newsletter, so see if it is in your area.

Last week I had the opportunity to be involved with a great program involving Best Of America By Horseback, the RFD TV program. They did a Christmas special for the families of the troops that are being deployed to Iraq. They were entertained by some great Western Music and Cowboy Poetry. Our own Geff Dawson did a super job with his original Cowboy Poetry along with some great music by Gary Pratt and TJ Casey.  Gary debuted a Christmas song
written specially for this event. Believe me when I say this will put him on the map!

You should be receiving our 2005 Winter Edition of The Checkerboard Corral real soon. Katie Young did an excellent job with her article “Safe” Options For Feeding Horses. The edition is packed with some good and useful information.

We have some great events scheduled for the 2006! Craig Cameron is set for Tuesday, April 18th, through April 26th. Check out the details in the Winter Edition of the Checkerboard. Just scheduled! Craig will be in the area Feb.21-Leavenworth, KS, Feb.22-LaCygne, KS, and Feb.23rd-Sedalia, MO.  I will be getting you more details later.

I would like to invite you folks to attend our 3rd Annual Horsemen’s Priority Conference scheduled for Feb.4th & 5th at the Kansas ExpoCentre in Topeka. A full-page ad is in the Winter Edition. There is even an opportunity to bring your horse!

TEDDY ROBINSON “FENCE WORK” CLINIC SCHEDULED!  I did get Teddy scheduled to come back to the area for a weekend of “cow horse education”. This 7-Time Reined Cowhorse Futurity Champion will be here April 7th, 8th, & 9th. Tentative plans are to hold this event at Fred & Susan Berschauer’s training facility in Louisburg, Kansas. I need to firm this up. Owned by the EBY Ranch, this new facility is one of the nicest in the area. We will be taking 15 riders for this event along with auditors.

For those of you feeding Purina products, we thank you! For those of you who are not, we would love the opportunity to show you what our feed can do! Purina Mills is the ONLY COMPANY that feeds it to their horses first, before they ask you to feed it to yours.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Ground Work

As we all know, everything you do with your horse starts on the ground. Please take this part of his education seriously. This means every moment he is in your presence, because he is taking every moment seriously.

There are several questions I like to ask myself every time I have finished by groundwork. I ask myself, "how is he feeling inside?"  I like to look for relaxation. Is his head and neck low?  Are his eyes soft?  Are his ears forward and attentive?  Is he resting a hind foot?  Have I seen him doing any licking and chewing? These are some indicators I look for. If the answer to all of these questions is yes, then it makes me feel that I ended on a good note.

I don’t want his session to end with him confused -- therefore ending his session with anxiety.  I want the horse feeling comfortable so he will want to work with me again. Think about yourself being around someone who makes you feel uncomfortable.  Chances are, given a choice, you would choose not to be around that person.

We all love and want the best for our horses, so please acknowledge how your horse is feeling from the inside...to him this is very important.

Next time you work with your horse, ask yourself the questions mentioned above;  then look at your horse for the answers to the questions. This could change your relationship together in a very positive way.
