Drop Off Point for KSU Equestrian Team Tack Donations

The KSU Equestrian Team is in need of good, clean, used or new English and Western tack and grooming supplies. Especially needed are snaffle bits, leather chin straps, headstalls, reins, saddles (for short people) and show clothes. This fall when you clean out your tack room or horse trailer, think of the KSU Equestrian Team and bring your items to Roy Frey Western. We will get them to Head Coach, Teresa Slough. Your support with this tack drive is greatly appreciated.

New Trails at Thompsonville Park – Lake Perry

Dewayne and I rode the new Thompsonville Park Trails at Lake Perry last week. Hats off to everyone who worked on opening this 10-mile stretch of trails! It is wooley, but beautiful! We saw dozens of turkey and lots of deer.

"When I Am Old"

I ran across this poem recently and wanted to share it with my cowgirl friends as it describes me perfectly – how about you? Enjoy - Jo

When I am Old...
I shall wear diamonds
And a wide brimmed straw hat
With silver and leather on it
and I shall spend my social security
On white wine and carrots
And sit in the alley of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out
in the middle of a summer's night
And ride the chestnut mare
Across the moonstruck meadow.
If my old bones will allow.

When people come to call I will smile and nod
As I walk them past the gardens to the barn
And show, instead, the beauty growing there
In stalls fresh-lined with straw.

I will shovel and sweat and
Wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.
And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who look down on me.
They've not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend,
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With nuzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am Old.

2007 Extreme Cowboy Race Comes to Saddle & Sirloin

RFD TV and Craig Cameron are bringing the Extreme Cowboy Race to Saddle & Sirloin Club, Kansas City, Missouri, June 22-24, 2007. More details will follow on how to enter.

2007 National Calvary Competition Comes to Ft. Riley

The U.S. Cavalry Association (USCA) will be conducting its 2007 National Cavalry Competition (NCC) September 13-16 2007 at Fort Riley, KS.

Previous NCC's were held at Fort Sill, OK (2002); Fort Worth Stockyards,TX (2003); Fort Riley, KS (2004); Fort Robinson State Park, NE (2005); and Fort Knox, KY (2006.

The individual competition consists of Equitation on the flat, Jumping, Mounted Saber, Mounted Pistol (both over fences), Bugle Calls, Authenticity of rider and equipment, as well as Platoon Drill for groups.

There are three levels for Equitation and Jumping with ribbons and plaques awarded to top three competitors in each division.

The Directors' Cup Trophy will be awarded to the high point rider.

The Pegasus Memorial Plaque for horse that best represents the Cavalry Horse.

The NCC is open to all who are interested in promoting the Associations' purpose of keeping the Cavalry tradition and spirit alive. The USCA encourages participation by mounted military color guards, cavalry re-enactors, memorial mounted units, mounted police, and others prepared to compete in period or modern uniform. The competition is open to units and individual competitors.

The NCC is held in conjunction with the Annual Bivouac (meeting) of the U.S. Cavalry Association. The Bivouac includes social events at which competitors have an opportunity to meet military veterans, including some who served in the old Horse Cavalry, and other association members, and to participate in traditional cavalry ceremonies.

The public is invited, in fact encouraged, to attend the event and witness history in action.

The USCA is requesting assistance of the Kansas Equestrian community in promoting the event and help in the way of manpower to conduct the event next September.
