Turquoise and orange, the colors of the Prairie Sky, is Roy Frey Western's theme for the 2007 BOTAR Tablescapes. Look for the upside down western Christmas tree adorned in turquoise and orange at the South end of the Governor's Hall in front of the glass doors. Our table will be set with the elegant western Montana Silversmith's "Branded" dishware pattern, copper chargers and accessory pieces. We will feature cowhide doilies, placemats, wine holders and hides. Our chairs will be decorated with unique leather purses and pillows and western art. Custom turquoise jewelry, longhorn and equine pewter serving pieces and Montana Silversmith statues will accessorize the tablescape. This is a great event for a great cause – don’t miss it!

Bev King wins Palomino World
We are so happy when our clients do well and we have been a tiny part of their success. This e-mail made us smile and we wanted to share it:

“Camp Coffee” by Bob Sullivan
If you want to read a most enjoyable book about the philosophy, life and times of a “real” Wyoming cowboy, you will want to get a copy of Bob Sullivan’s “Camp Coffee”. I met Bob last year on the Dream Ride in the Flint Hills. He told me about his book and we ordered some for the store. Since then, his book has won the Independent Publishing Book Award! This book would make a perfect present for that hard to buy for cowboy or if you just want to read a really, really good western book to read, we have a copy for you at Roy Frey Western.

Will Rogers Book
Here’s a fun book for that should be on everyone’s Christmas wish list - “Will Rogers: Apropos Thoughts, Quotes & Anecdotes on Elections & Politics” and coming out in late September, “Will Rogers & Charley” both by Charley Green. Charley is from Overland Park, KS and we met at the Extreme Cowboy Race. This book has been selling like hot cakes!

Country Parson Awards/Vote
If you don’t, you should listen to Scott Perkins, the Country Parson, on 94.5 WIBW FM, on Sunday mornings. He has a great radio show. Each fall he has the listeners vote on their favorite artists and songs. You can stop by Roy Frey Western to cast your ballet or vote online at www.thecountryparson.com.

Kansas Museum of History Seeking Clothing Donations
Discovery Place, the Kansas Museum of History’s free hands-on children’s area, has over 12,000 visitors annually --and the most popular section is the cowboy corral and western area (complete with kid-sized horses, cowboy camp and train). The popularity of the corral has worn out the western-themed dress-up clothes, and the Museum is seeking donations of clean, used western wear for replacement. Specific items requested are boots, hats, chaps, vests, overalls and dusters. Children’s sizes (for those less than 12 years of age) are preferred, but adult sizes of boots and hats would be welcome. Please drop of any donations at Roy Frey’s by September 30th. For more info contact: Michelle Stottlemire, Education Program Coordinator, Kansas State Historical Society, 6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66615-1099, 785-272-8681 x 414, 785-272-8682 fax, mstottlemire@kshs.org

What’s Cooking? - Here are some great, EASY, appetizers to make for your next trail ride or tailgating party, courtesy Marilyn Domer.

Raspberry Chipotle Black Bean Dip

2 cans black beans drained
1 pkg cream cheese softened
½ bottle roasted raspberry chipotle sauce (recommend Bronco Bob’s)
1 Cup shredded cheddar

Stir together, bake for 10 minutes at 400o covered.
Stir and bake for 10 more minutes uncovered.
Garnish with jalapeño pepper.
Serve with chips or crackers.

Jalapeno Poppers
What ever quantity of jalapeno peppers you want.
Slice in half and remove seeds – might want to use rubber gloves.
Fill each half with cream cheese.
Wrap a half slice of thin sliced bacon around each half and secure with a toothpick.
Cook on the grill – cheese side up - until the bacon is done. Or you can shape a sheet of aluminum like a tray with sides and cook the poppers on it. This eliminates some of the smoking and potential grease fires. Drain poppers on paper towel and discard grease and foil.

Tortilla Rollups
1 pkg cream cheese softened
1 small can chopped green chilies
Flour tortillas
Mix cream cheese and green chilies together and spread on tortillas.
Roll up and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
Slice into ¾” pieces and serve.

Combine these appetizers with fresh salsa and chips and you will have a tasty party!
