Celebrate the Western Lifestyle in June!
June is a wonderful month to celebrate the western lifestyle. The month begins
with the Flint Hills PRCA rodeo in Strong City June 6-7-8. If you’d rather be
riding, then don't miss the 1st Annual Old West Cowboy Days Trail Ride, June
7-8, Burkdoll Brothers Cattle Company, Bush City Ranch.
The next week-end, June 13-14-15 (which is also Father’s Day), is the Kansas
High School Rodeo Championship in Topeka. Perfect opportunity to take Dad to
see a great rodeo and celebrate his special day or go to the Symphony on the
Prairie in the Flint Hills. Heartland Ranch, Wakarusa, is hosting an Ultimate
Horseman’s Challenge clinic Sat., and event Sun. Get tuned up for the trails
and compete in the UHCA event the next day.
The Great Overland Station Fundraiser is celebrating the Western Lifestyle
with their theme “Sunset On The Prairie” gala event in Topeka. Don’t miss this
opportunity to dress up “western style”, have a great chuck wagon meal cooked
by Josh & Gwen Hoy, listen to Geff Dawson and Judy Coder perform and see the
talented local artists compete in a “Quick Draw”.
The Extreme Cowboy Race is back at Saddle and Sirloin in Kansas City, June
21-22nd. This is absolutely the most fun event to watch. This year, the Open
event horses will be auctioned off Sat. night. Great chance to buy a “broke”
horse.
June 28th and 29th is Old West Days at Ottawa, KS. An all equine parade at 10
a.m. Sat. and cattle drive down main street begins the week-end of vendors,
clinicians, concerts and lots of fun. For more details on all these fun
events, go to
http://www.royfreywestern.com/events.

My Dad’s Advice
By Nyle Henderson
|
|
I think back a few years to when I was a boy…
Dad bought me a horse instead of a toy.
And he taught me something when I got bucked down-
Not to lay there and whimper but get up off the ground.
“Son,” he’d say, “you’ll never have pride,
If you quit right now and don’t finish the ride.”
First he’d dust off my britches, then catch up my horse,
He’d hand me the reins and start me back on my course.
I probably wouldn’t be a-ridin’ today,
If it weren’t for those words my dad used to say…
They’ve come back to me since time and again,
And I realize now what I didn’t see then:
He wasn’t just talking about a horse that could buck,
But about problems I might try to duck.
So when trouble springs up every once in a while,
I think of my dad and I quietly smile…
I don’t turn my back or run off to hide-
I get up off the ground and I finish the ride.

It is now time to put up the felt had and get out the straw hat and wear it until Labor Day! But, before you put up your felt hat, have Mike or Dewayne give it a tune up – cleaning and shaping to fit your face before you put it in the hat can for the summer. Liz’s Trail Corner
Liz Syverson, our resident trail rider, endurance rider and tack specialist has added many new products to the new “Trail Corner” in the tack department at Roy Frey Western. The “Trail Corner” features new and unique trail riding products such as the light weight Cashel Trail and Trail Blazer saddles in 16” and 17” seats: |
|
|
Also find: Thinline pads; Stowaway cantle packs, Outback
packable rain coats; Hought Endurance headstalls, breast collars and cruppers,
Cashel specialty trail packs
and saddle accessories, EZ-Up Stirrup Extenders, and Stirrup Swivels. Please
don’t forget your helmet; we have a complete stock of Troxel Helmets. Get
outfitted in
new trail riding apparel including jeans, belts, jackets, hats and boots, too!
These items will make trail riding more enjoyable for you and your horse on
the trail and in
the camp. If there is a special item that you have been looking for be sure to
tell us about it.
Dewayne and I have been riding with the Thinline pads, and we can really tell
the difference in the the feel of the saddle seat – it’s much softer. If you
have back problems or your horse gets sore, you might give a Thinline Pad a
try.
Liz's Trail Tips: Dehydration is a factor for you and your horse on the trail. In the excitement of discovering new places on the trail some riders might neglect to offer their horse and themselves a little water. With handy bottled water it is easy for the rider to carry water. For your equine buddy the frequent sips are just as important. Even if your horse seems disinterested in drinking--take a pause at every available source. If you have a horse who is reluctant there are several things you can do to help him with a cooling drink. Sponge him--get a sponge on a string that you can toss into the water source and sponge him down with cool water--starting on the neck and working back. Another strategy for helping your reluctant drinker is to carry either a collapsable water bucket or by recycling a plastic jug; cutting the bottom off at a slant thus creating a "water scoop" the carrying handle can be attached to your saddle with a thong. A word of caution: be sure that your horse is accustomed to the plastic jug hanging on the saddle before you mount up. Many horses can startle when they are surprised by an unusual sound.

Prairie Sunset Glows On Annual Gala
The Great Overland Station celebrates our Western Heritage at its 5th annual
gala “Sunset on the Prairie.” The evening of Western art, entertainment, and
fare will be held on Friday, June 20th, at 701 North Kansas Avenue. All
proceeds benefit the Great Overland Station and the All Veterans Memorial.
The Great Overland Station will transform into the “GOS Ranch” for the evening, which begins at 6:00 with cocktails, dinner at 7:00, plus entertainment and a live auction to follow. Diners will enjoy the Flying W Ranch’s famous “Chuck Wagon Buffet” featuring prime Kansas beef. The evening will also include a “Quick Draw Showdown” featuring well-known regional artists. These artists, Debra Clemente, Judith Mackey, and Stan Herd, will create masterpieces in front of the gala’s guests. The works of art will later be offered, along with other special items, during a live auction. Besides treasures for the eyes, the event will offer pleasure for the ears when Western singer Judy Coder performs at the gala, as well as cowboy poet Geff Dawson.
Kansas was a major part of the “wild, wild West”, known for
lawmen such as Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody, and for outlaws such as
Jesse James. The advent of the railroads through Kansas after the Civil War
greatly expanded trade opportunities and encouraged settlement. The cattle
industry soon became a staple of this region and the cowboy was synonymous
with the West. “Sunset on the Prairie” will recall those adventurous days.
Tickets for the gala can be purchased at the Great Overland Station or by calling 232-5533. Individual tickets are $150.00 each or $250.00 per couple. Patrons may purchase a table for eight for $2,500.00 The Great Overland Station is a non-profit museum/education center which celebrates regional heritage with an emphasis on the railroad’s role in local and national history. The station itself was restored and re-dedicated in the summer of 2004.
New -- Ultimate
Horsemen’s Challenge Association
Want To Have Some Fun? Come Ride With Us!
The Ultimate Horsemen’s Challenge Association (U.H.C.A.) invites you to come ride with us and have fun on horseback in 2008. The events will be similar to the Extreme Cowboy Race with the association providing a regional format with different ability level classes to encourage riders of all skill levels to become involved and sharpen their horsemanship skills.
The founding members of the U.H.C.A. come from both sides of the Missouri-Kansas state line. All are from a diverse background of horses and good horsemanship. The clinics and challenges (events) will be held on both sides of the Mo-Kan state line, however, competitors are welcome from anywhere.
Points for year end awards will be kept throughout the year. Riders need not make every event as points from an individual’s top five finishes will determine the teams (rider/horse) year end standings.
Each challenge will consist of four core classes: Youth 17 & under, Novice Amateur, Amateur and Open. Nominated members of the U.H.C.A. will have points kept by the association secretary for year end awards.
The U.H.C.A. invites you to come learn, ride and enjoy the challenges of the outdoor obstacle courses. We are dedicated to having fun, riding safe and enjoying fast-paced events for riders of any level.
There will be several professional training clinics offered throughout the year. These are designed to help horse and riders with any problems they might encounter and advance their training levels.

A very special “Thanks” to Bob and Brandi Lewis for organizing the event; Trail Boss, Jim Thomas; Paul Pingleton for his entertaining auctioneering; J.D. Drescher and Keith Colter, Heritage Tractor, for the use of their gators and Purina Horse Feed donation; Black Eye BBQ and Fairview Mills for the great food; Jostens; Cheryl Wonnell’s Creative Advertising; TFM Comm Inc; NEA Performance Horses; Eisenhower State Park; and all the wonderful volunteers who help make this ride a success! Be proud because you have touched a lot of kid’s hearts and will make a difference in their lives. The Wright Flight pilots and volunteers are very grateful. Thank you! |
What’s Cooking? - At Roy
Frey Western Lifestyles
A side benefit of helping with the Wright Flight Trail Ride is that the
volunteers camp in Eisenhower State Park West Point Area and share meals, tall
tales, and the rest of the stuff falls under the category of “what happens on
the trail, stays on the trail” sort of thing. Brandi Lewis, the event
organizer, brought some dips that I just about foundered on and I ask if I
could share the recipes so you could enjoy them as well:
Spinach Dip
1 pkg (10 oz) frozen chopped spinach, thawed & drained
1 16 oz sour cream
1 c. Hellmann’s mayonnaise
1 pkg KNORR vegetable Soup, Dip & Recipe Mix
1 8 oz water chestnuts, drained & chopped (optional)
3 green onions, chopped
Mix together, cover & chill 2 hours to blend flavors.
I add 2 c. shredded Swiss cheese
Serve with cut up French bread or chips
Budding Beef Dip
2-3 pkg cream cheese, softened
1 small can chopped black olives
3 T onion (I usually put more in...whatever your preference is)
1 pkg Budding beef or equivalent brand (found in the lunchmeat section)
In a food processor finely chop onion, then add olives, slice beef w/knife then add to onion/olive mixture. Add cream cheese to mixture and allow to blend. Serve with chips or crackers.
Hamburger/Bean Dip
1 ½ lb Hamburger
1 lb sausage
1 medium onion chopped brown together, drain and add:
1 sm can refried beans
1 sm can stewed tomatoes
1 can Rotel
Velveeta to taste (at least 1 ½ lb)
and Salsa to taste
Serve warm with chips.
