"National Day of the American Cowboy"
This is a day we set out to give praise
To those who honor the Cowboy ways.
The American Cowboy is a true hero,
Who helped our nation to thrive and grow.
The cowboy was a true pioneer,
Who braved the wild western frontier.
Not only did he tame the American West,
He stood for the values which we think of as best:
He believes in hard work, and playing hard too,
And in honoring women in all that they do.
To be independent and stand up for what's right,
To be courageous and honest and not run from a fight.
To be brave and loyal, to ride for the brand,
And be a good steward of his livestock and land.
Those are timeless values that still hold true,
Still used every day in what modern cowboys do.
Now the U.S. Senate has voted to have a day
To honor the American Cowboy in this way.
We give thanks for all that cowboys and cowgirls do,
To keep the Cowboy way alive and true.
So we honor this legacy for the values it will employ,
As we celebrate the National Day of the American Cowboy.

Liz’s Trail Corner
Liz Syverson, our resident trail rider, endurance rider and tack specialist
has added many new products to the new “Trail Corner” in the tack department
at Roy Frey Western. The “Trail Corner” features new and unique trail riding
products such as the light weight Cashel Trail and Trail Blazer saddles in 16”
and 17” seats:
|
|
Also find: Thinline pads; Stowaway cantle packs, Outback packable rain coats; Hought Endurance headstalls, breast collars and cruppers, Cashel specialty trail packs and saddle accessories, EZ-Up Stirrup Extenders, and Stirrup Swivels. Please don’t forget your helmet; we have a complete stock of Troxel Helmets. Get outfitted in new trail riding apparel including jeans, belts, jackets, hats and boots, too! These items will make trail riding more enjoyable for you and your horse on the trail and in the camp. If there is a special item that you have been looking for be sure to tell us about it.
Dewayne and I have been riding with the Thinline pads and we can really tell the difference in the feel of the saddle seat – it’s much softer. If you have back problems or your horse gets sore, you might give a Thinline Pad a try.
Liz’s Trail Tips: Severe Weather Safety Tips--
I know that we don't want to think about this possibility, however, here are a
few tips from Ridecamp Archives that might help you out in a bad weather
situation.
If a tornado is approaching your area what can you do to protect yourself and your horse? Get off and get low. Get in a ditch, culvert, behind a large fallen log, If you can detect the path of the tornado and you are in an open area; try to travel perpendicular to its path.
Hail can panic a horse. Get off!
Lightning: avoid being in open area. Thickly wooded trails are safer as long as you are not on top of a hill. Avoid hilltops in open meadows. Don't take shelter under a lone tree.
If you are caught in the open by a rapidly approaching
lightning storm; get off, tie the horse if you can, but get away from your
horse. You can get low; the horse can't. If you are holding the reins and the
horse is struck by lightning the lightning can be conducted to you.

New Lucky Bucky “Tree Hugger” Tee Shirt
The original idea for the shirt "My Horse is a Tree Hugger - Leave Only
Kneecaps Behind" shirt was based on Donna Taylor’s (owner & designer of Lucky
Bucky tee shirts) own experiences trail riding in the woods. She wanted
something to remind riders to help take care of our trails (don't leave trash,
junk, etc. on the trail - only kneecaps). "Kneecaps" is in reference to
sometimes when riding, the trail is so narrow that you can bump your kneecaps
on trees if not careful.
Donna became aware of the STEP (Stewards for Trails, Education and Partnerships) program from Mardell Smith of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association and thought the program would be a natural tie-in and a way to help promote STEP and the shirt. The cut tee shirt is intended to create rider AWEARNESS about the STEP program and to encourage people to learn more about what they can do to help preserve and maintain riding trails in America.
Roy Frey Western has the new “Tree Hugger” tee shirts in stock.

Women and Horses Event to be Held in Sedalia
![]() |
A three-day event will be held Oct. 24-26 in Sedalia, Mo. that
is geared toward women involved in the horse industry. The event is a
celebration of Women and Horses. It is aimed at horsewomen, whether they are
first-time horse owners, long-time horse owners, horse enthusiasts,
professional horsewomen or horse-related business owners.
The concept for this event came out of the Women and Horses
Mind, Spirit and Body seminars that are conducted by Cheryl Childs and her
staff. The seminars deal with assisting women in overcoming fears and bad
experiences that may be stopping them from enjoying their horses.
“It’s about how women relate differently to their horses, and
to problems with their horses, than most men do, Childs explained. Out of that
came the concept for an event aimed at horsewomen. “
Women are just going crazy over this event said Childs, owner
of New Visions Marketing & Promotions, an equine advertising/marketing
business that is co-producing the event. We are getting calls from all over
the country from women wanting to attend, participate and be vendors, she
said. We have had women call and say they heard about the event while they
were riding with friends.
It appears that horsewomen are willing to support this event in every way they can whether it’s attending, participating in breed or discipline demonstrations, being vendors, presenting, or lecturing. Women represent 80 percent of the market and want to be recognized as the driving force in the horse industry by companies that they patronize.
Along with a trade show featuring the latest and most
innovative products for horses and their owners, there will be breed
demonstrations, a stallion showcase, stallion parades, and a daily parade of
breeds. An Equine Art contest and a Women and Horses Stall of Fame honoring
horsewomen and their accomplishments are being planned for the run of the
expo. There will be a host of speakers and lecturers presenting a wide variety
of topics.
Julie Goodnight, of RFD-TV’s Horse Master television show,
will be presenting several times during the event. Singer/songwriter Templeton
Thompson will perform with her horse Jane. Imagine a Horse will entertain and
inform with enlightened trick training. Cheryl Childs of Women and Horses,
Mind, Spirit and body will speak during the event. Claudia Misner, who is a
German trained dressage rider and judge, will perform dressage demonstrations
at beginner and advanced levels and Lyn Walker of Lynwood Equine will be
joined by other guest speakers. Gary Norris of Quarter Ridge Trailers will
present Trailer Safety and Backing demonstrations (men are welcome). The Royal
Friesians of Kansas City, an all-Friesian, all-woman drill team, will perform
daily.
Corporate sponsors for the event include 2010 World Equestrian
Games sponsor Alltech, as well as Smartpak and Agrifresh, maker of an odor
eliminator for horse stalls. Watch for more corporate sponsors in anticipation
of the success of this event, and find more information at www.

The Ultimate Horsemen’s Challenge Association (U.H.C.A.) invites you to come ride with us and have fun on horseback in 2008. The events will be similar to the Extreme Cowboy Race with the association providing a regional format with different ability level classes to encourage riders of all skill levels to become involved and sharpen their horsemanship skills.

Points for year end awards will be kept throughout the year. Riders need not make every event as points from an individual’s top five finishes will determine the teams (rider/horse) year end standings.

What’s Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles
I watched Sunny Anderson on the Food Network make these potatoes and they
looked easy and tasty. So I tried this recipe for a family get-together and
they were the hit of the evening! They are easy, look great on the plate and
are fun to make! Enjoy!
Garlic Hasselback Potatoes with Herbed Sour Cream
16 ounces new red potatoes (two-three small/medium sized potatoes per person)
3-5 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
4 Tablespoons butter, melted
2 Tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Preheat oven to 400o F.
Using a wooden spoon as a cradle, place each potato in the spoon and make several parallel slits into each potato top making sure not to slice completely through. Place 3 garlic slices between slits at the corner of each potato. Toss in a medium bowl with butter and olive oil. Place on a baking sheet and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Bake until tops are crispy an potatoes are cooked through, about 1 hour. Transfer to a platter and top with Herbed Sour Cream.
Herbed Sour Cream:
½ Cup sour cream
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley leaves
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Combine ingredients in a small bowl. Season to taste. Serve warm.
