Hats Off to Heritage Tractor
Our 2005 John Deere gator was stolen out of our horse barn the evening of
August 15th by some low count thieves who brazenly put it in neutral and
rolled it past our bedroom window and loaded it on a waiting trailer parked
just down the road. To our rescue came Keith Colter and Ryan Tenbrink,
Heritage Tractor of Topeka. Sunday morning we called Keith (he was visiting
relatives in Missouri) and cried on his shoulder and begged to borrow a
gator for the next week. We were leaving on vacation the next morning and
our wonderful neighbors needed the gator to take care of our critters! Keith
called Ryan who came to our rescue on a Sunday with a loaner gator! Customer
service doesn’t get any better than this and we greatly appreciated it! We
had a great vacation riding Fort Robinson and the Badlands National Park.
Now the dogs have a new gator to ride around in and life is good again! We
highly recommend Heritage Tractor if you are looking for a John Deere
tractor, equipment, gator, or lawn mower. Thanks so much again, Keith & Ryan
– you are the BEST!

Fashion Warning – Wrangler Discontinuing Cowgirl Higher Rise Jeans
More bad news on the horizon for us cowgirls who don’t like the low rise
jeans! Cruel Girl did away with their “original rise” fit jeans a year ago.
Now Wrangler is discontinuing the higher rise Calgary and Tulsa fits from
their product line and beefing up the style selection in the new Cash, Jet
and Q-Baby Ultimate Riding Jeans. If the Calgary or Tulsa fit is one of your
favorites, better stock up before they are gone. We are happy to special
order these jeans for you if we don’t have them in stock.
The good news is that Wrangler is coming out with a “brown color” Q-Baby right after the first of the year. They are very nice and we have ordered some great coordinating blouses and tanks to go with them!

Hat Sponges – Great for Catfish Bait
The secret is out. The best sponge available for catching catfish is the
orange M & F Western hat cleaning sponge sold at Roy Frey Western. Whether
you make your own sponge bait or use a commercial brand, you want it to stay
on the sponge and you want the sponge to be tough enough to last through
several bites. Our sponges meet that test. Most fishermen simply cut the hat
sponges into smaller sizes, appropriate for the size hook they use, thread
it onto the hook, dip it in the sponge bait and start catching fish. The
sponges sell for $2.99 per two sponge package and may be cut into as many as
two dozen fishable chunks depending on size bait preferred.

Western, get a new hat and have Mike or Dewayne custom shape it to fit your
face. You will be looking your western best.

Fun Fact for October
Horses younger than 4 years can concentrate for a maximum of 10-15 minutes.
From: http://www.tahoemeadows.com/horse_facts.htm
Quote for October
"Don't compromise on obedience. The sooner you convey (or remind) your horse
who's boss,
the better you're going to get along, and the more fun you're
going to have out on any trail."

Liz’s Trail Corner – October Trail Tip
October will be here in all its glory with absolutely wonderful trail riding
weather. It's getting colder at night and we now have fewer hours of
sunshine. You've probably noticed the beginnings of winter's coat appearing
on your horse. That longer coat gives us some new concerns to address.
Girth/cinch area needs more attention; always a concern for riders trail and otherwise--but with a longer coat there can be more chance of irritation in this sensitive area. Make sure that you thoroughly groom this area. Even a small amount of debris can cause a gall. Depending upon your equipment choice--be it the traditional mohair or one of the newer synthetics make sure that you inspect your girth/cinch before riding and that you clean it afterwards. When tightening your cinch--make sure that you're not pulling that possibly longer coat that I mentioned as you tighten the latigo. Slipping your hand behind the latigo and cinching up slowly can alleviate the pulling of the horse's coat. Here's another tip for a horse that might be prone to galling--if you are using a synthetic (neoprene) cinch--lubricate it with aloe vera gel. Aloe vera will not harm your equipment or your horse. If you have a galling problem with a horse, be sure and pick up a tin of Bickmore Gall Salve which is available in our store. Bickmore Gall Salve is one of those good old time preparations which is not widely available, but is a great item to have in your tack room and trailer.

What’s
Cooking? - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles |
Over Labor Day, we went riding with a great group of friends at Kanopolis
State Park. It was a wonderful ride – good horses, good friends, good
riding, and good food.
Sharing recipes is one of the benefits of riding with
this group. The menu was real simple:
Appetizer – everyone brought one and shared
Hamburgers/Buns/ Condiments
Green Salad
Potato Salad
Deviled Eggs
Cowboy Beans
Chips & Salsa
Birthday Cake for Dewayne and Brandi
Becky’s Summer Salad
1 head lettuce
3 tomatoes
1 can Mexican style beans (drained) (I use garbanzo beans)
15 oz bag Taco chips (crushed)
8 oz Cheddar cheese (shredded)
1 8 oz Catalina dressing
Brandi’s Corn Dip
8 oz cream cheese
1 cup sour cream
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup mayo
1/2 tsp Tabasco sauce (more or less to taste)
8 strips of bacon fried and crumbled (optional)
1, 8 oz can niblet corn drained and finely chopped
Onion to taste (I use at least one medium sized onion)
Mix all ingredients and refrigerate overnight. Serve with Frito scoops.
Emmy’s Cowboy Beans – Lanny & Jane Grosland
INGREDIENTS --
< 1/4 lb bacon, chopped
< 1 medium onion, chopped
< Some jalapeno peppers, sliced (optional) (at least throw in some juice
from the jalapeno jar)
< 3 to 6 Oscar Mayer beef hot dogs, sliced
< 1 to 2 hot links, sliced (optional)
< 1 15-oz can kidney beans, drained
< 1 15-oz can pork & beans
< 1/2 cup brown sugar
< 2 tsp mustard
< 2 tsp cider vinegar
< 1/2 tsp salt
< 1/2 cup catsup
< 1 lb Hillshire Farm Hot Smoked Sausage (optional)
< Ice
< Coca-Cola or Dr Pepper
< Canadian Mist (any brand of Canadian whisky will work) or Capt Morgan's
Spiced Rum
DIRECTIONS --
< Combine ice, Coke & Mist (or Dr Pepper & Run) in a glass and sip while
proceeding with directions; re-combine and re-sip as deemed necessary.
< Brown bacon and onion in stockpot.
< Add jalapeno peppers, hot dogs, hot links (optional) and sauté.
< Add remaining ingredients (except optional sausage, ice, Coke & Mist or Dr
Pepper & Rum) and simmer for 30 minutes.?
< Grill smoked sausage over medium heat for 8-10 minutes (optional).
< To serve, cut up sausage and place on top of beans (optional).
< Feed the grilled smoked sausage to your dog.
< Mosey up to the plate and chow down.
< Ensure back cinch is tight before riding out.
Now these are the eat right now directions, which I normally use because
I want to eat right now. You can after you brown & sauté the bacon, onion,
peppers, hot dogs and hot links in a skillet, dump them and the remaining
ingredients (except option sausage, ice, etc) in a stockpot and place it in
the
ice box overnite to let everything kind of mix together. Heat up and eat
the next day.
CAMP FIRE COFFEE – LANNY GROSLAND
INGREDIENTS :
l COLD WATER
l ONE (1) CUP OF GROUND COFFEE
l ONE (1) EGG
l CANADIAN BLENDED WHISKY (OPTIONAL)
DIRECTIONS :
TAKE OPTIONAL SHOT OF CANADIAN WHISKY, WHICH SOMETIMES ENHANCES THE TASTE OF
THE COFFEE. HEAT POT OF COLD
WATER TO BOILING (BOIL ONLY 2-3 MINUTES). PLACE
GROUND COFFEE AND EGG IN MIDDLE OF A PIECE OF CHEESECLOTH AND
TIE THE
CHEESECLOTH INTO A SACK. REMOVE BOOT AND USE YOUR SOCK IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY
CHEESECLOTH AVAILABLE.
A SECTION OF PANTY HOSE COULD ALSO WORK IF YOU CAN
FIND A COWBOY WEARING PANTY HOSE. TAKE ANOTHER OPTIONAL
SHOT OF CANADIAN
WHISKY (ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TO USE THE SOCK YOU WERE WEARING OR TEAR A
SECTION OF PANTY
HOSE OFF THE COWBOY WEARING THEM). BREAK EGG IN THE SACK
AND MIX WITH THE COFFEE BY MASSAGING THE BAG. DROP
THE SACK INTO THE BOILING
WATER AND COOK FOR FOUR (4) MINUTES. ADD ONE-HALF (1/2) CUP COLD WATER TO
SETTLE ANY
GROUNDS.
Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding River Girl Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well
loved” and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls
may only get the opportunity to come to Winding River once a year. They
often do not have boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has
become quite a challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come to Winding
River for the Spring and Fall Program. We would welcome all
sizes of used
boots. Roy Frey Western in Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve
as drop off locations. If you would like more information about Winding
River you can go to: www.theranchatloneoak.com or contact Linda Grimmett
