Montana Silversmith's Steve Miller Signature Collection Statue
December Feature Statue – The Highest Price For Beef

       "The Highest Price for Beef"
                  MSRP $262.00
19.75" Long x 8.75" Wide x 11.25" Tall

When a cowboy signed up for a cattle drive north, it was for half a year at a time. They got paid when they got the herd to the end of the trail. They got a bonus if they made good time, and if they lost a minimum amount of cows. “Shrink” was not acceptable to the owners or the cow boss who hired the men to tend them.

But it was more than money that called these men to the trail, it was adventure and cowboy pride. Pride in doing the job he was being paid to do, pride in his horsemanship, and his ability to handle anything the trail or the weather could throw at him. They were honor bound, they gave their word, and any good cowboy would die for their honor or their word if it came down to it.

Life was slow and boring most times, it moved at the pace of a tired, thirsty cow. It could be hot and dusty, so dusty it would dry your throat and mud your eyes. It might be cold and rainy, a rain that would chill a man to the bone in minutes, all in the same day. It was lonely. Most cowboys worked out of hearing distance and sometimes even sight of each other riding point, herd, or drag. And town, well that was at the end of the trail.

But on those rare occasions when things went sideways, it could get exciting real fast. When thunder or lightning, a grizzly or just plain "cow ghosts" spooked a herd of 2,000 half wild cattle the prairie would literally shake with the pounding, and the entire ground as far as you could see would begin to move faster and faster, the whole herd feeding on the frenzy of itself until they could run no more, or until they plunged into a wash or gully or river. That could cost hundreds of lives and bankrupt the whole endeavor.

Any young cowboy worth his salt, put spur to hide, with no thought of the danger, to try to ride down and turn the herd. If he can get the leaders to slowly turn, the rest will follow and they can be run in a huge circle over safe ground until they wind themselves and are forced to stop.

In an instant, quick as the lightening itself, a scared calf trying to quit the herd puts both in a deadly situation.

In terms of dollars, cowboys sold their time cheap, but for duty and honor some young boys paid "The Highest Price for Beef."

AG am in Kansas– Channel 13 WIBW – 4:30 am – New Show
Watch for us “Cowgirls” on the new AG am in Kansas TV show on WIBW Channel 13 airing in January at 4:30 am (or set your recorder and watch it later or watch the various segments on the internet). The web site www.agaminkansas.com is under construction and will be completed in January.

We met Heather Newell and Brian Hollman this fall and they introduced us to their new TV show. Heather was a great sport and accepted my invitation to come to the Fall Cowgirl Camp to learn to ride a horse and be a cowgirl. We outfitted her from head to toe and she did great. She rode Dewayne's horse Everett (Smokes Boston Beamer) across the beautiful Flint Hills of the Bar U Ranch. A little white knuckled at first and then Heather settled right in like someone who had ridden all her life. She made a comment that she might be a little sore the next day (this was after about 2 hours of riding) and I told her I promised her she would be sore! What fun for everyone! Heather also got to visit the Flying W Ranch and Jim Bell and Sons while in the area. Watch for this segment!

Heather also did a segment on "Western Warm" starring Marilyn Domer, our famous store designer. Rumor has it, the segment turned out really good and it will be run in January as well. Also watch for Ernie Rodina and Dawn Dawson’s Better Horses segment.

For a preview of the show go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDy5TMcGQ90&NR=1 and listen to Diane Gillenwater's beautiful fiddle music and see a glimpse of Jo and Kramer riding at the Bar U Ranch in the Flint Hills and Dawn & Ernie’s “Horsing Around” .

Western Warm
Keep your feet western warm this winter with insulated and water proof boots from Ariat and Muck Boot Companies. These boots are comfortable, dry and light weight. While you are at Roy Frey’s get a pair of Heatrac gloves for only $14.99 – what the feedlot cowboys wear to keep their hands warm! Protect your neck and face with a colorful wild rag. Roy Frey Western has winter vests and jackets for dress or chores.

Muck boots are lightweight, flexible, buoyant and waterproof top to bottom. The lining provides superior comfort and breathability by wicking away humidity and perspiration. Getting the boots on and off is hands free – easy! CR-foam stretches so the boots are easy to get into and the 10mn kick rim or pull tab makes them easy to take off. There is added support and slipper-soft molded comfort in the foot-bed. The rubber shell and nylon upper clean up with a spray of water or gentle scrubbing. Vulcanization binds the rubber pieces together to form a lightweight durable shell. Nothing compares to the comfort and fit of the Original Muck Boot CompanyTM brand waterproof footwear. But don’t take our word for it – come try one on!

Clinton Anderson is Coming to KC in January

Weather Lore for December
          • Thunder in December presages fine weather
          • A green Christmas, a white Easter
          • As the days lengthen so the cold strengthens
          • If it rains much during the twelve days after Christmas, it will be a wet year.

The December full moon is the  "Full Cold Moon".  December is the month when the winter cold fastens its grip and the night become long and dark.  This full Moon is also called the Long Nights Moon by some Native American tribes.

Liz’s Trail Corner – December Trail Tip

Trail Riders' Gift List

Great gloves in supple leather by Justin sized for ladies and men as well as kids. These are a great item that every rider should have. Great for feeling the reins in your hands and keeping your hands warm in moderate temperatures.

For the warmest gloves in cold weather we recommend the Heatrac glove used by feedlot cowboys. Give surprising dexterity, warmth and durability at a great price - $14.99 per pair. Available in sizes to fit everyone from kids to adults.

Helmets are for every rider. We stock sizes for all riders in fashion colors as well as more conservative hues. Troxel helmets meet the industry's standard for protection and durability. Roy Frey Western is now carrying helmet cases in brown and black.

Saddle packs make great gifts for the trail rider. Stowaway packs are great for those who want a cantle pack complete with water bottles. Cashel makes a great horn bag style for those who prefer their gear on the front. Stowaways are available in a wide selection of colors. Cashel colors include black, tan and camo.

Every trail rider can use a new saddle pad and Christmas is a great time to treat your horse and yourself to a new pad. Thinline's great felt combination pad is available for the square and round skirted saddle. Once you try one you won't be without it.

Hought Trail Tack in beta biothane is without compare for ease of use and practicality. Ease of care--just dunk it in a bucket to clean it, lots of color choices and sizing that fits. Quality speaks for itself. Made in the U.S.A.

Trail riders can always use another bucket--why not pick a favorite color and stock it full of useful items such as grooming equipment (brushes, hoof pick, curry comb), grooming products (detanglers, conditioners, shampoo), neat knick knacks (treat pockets, tie one on, ankle safe, etc.), horse treats, a colorful wild rag, and if you happen to have a picture of that special horse and rider why not frame it in a wonderful western themed frame.

Trail Tip for winter riding.
Due to the rainy weather we have been having, our horses are all in need of special hoof care. All horses regardless of age who live outside are subject to hoof abscesses in these wet conditions. Get on a regular schedule with your farrier year round. During extremely wet weather keep your horses in their stalls with adequate bedding to help their hooves dry out overnight or for at least a few hours each day. Pick their hooves regularly before and after riding. At any sign of lameness contact your veterinarian for evaluation of the situation.

       What’s Cooking?

                      - At Roy Frey Western Lifestyles

New Year's is approaching, and you’ll want to be sure and eat some black-eyed peas on January 1st so you will have good luck all during 2010!
This recipe has become a trail ride favorite.

           "Good Luck Black-Eyed Pea Salsa
4 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped (Roma's are best)
1 pkg (16 oz) frozen corn, thawed
1 can (15 ½ oz) black-eyed peas, rinsed & drained (or use frozen)
          ½ Cup chopped green pepper
          3 green onions
          2 Tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
1 Cup Italian salad dressing (I like the "Zesty" – more kick)
          Assorted tortilla chips

In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Drizzle with dressing and toss to coat. Serve as a salad or salsa with tortilla chips. Good with pork.

KCPD Mounted Patrol Needs 2 Good Geldings
The Kansas City Missouri Mounted Patrol is looking for 2 geldings, 6-18 years of age, at least 15.2 hands, good conformation, good temperament, well trained and overall sound.

Donated horses are accepted for a 90 day trial period. If the horse passes the trial period he would then become the property of the Board of Police Commissioners. Horses that do not pass will be returned to the donating party. If the decision is made to retire a police horse at any time, the original owner would then be contacted to accept return of the horse if they so chose. Visit www.kcmountedpatrol.org for more information or contact Sgt. Joey Roberts at 816-363-1824.

Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding River Girl Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well loved” and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls may only get the opportunity to come to Winding River once a year. They often do not have boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has become quite a challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come to Winding River for the Spring and Fall Program. We would welcome all sizes of used boots. Roy Frey Western in Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve as drop off locations. If you would like more information about Winding River you can go to: www.theranchatloneoak.com or contact Linda Grimmett (816) 914-0490.
