Midwest Mustang and Burro Saddle
Club – July 11 at RFW
Come see mustangs that have been adopted and learn more about adopting a
Mustang or Burro on Saturday, July 11th at Roy Frey Western. The Midwest
Mustang and Burro group will be available to discuss the August 27-29 BLM
Wild Horse adoption to be held at the Kansas ExpoCentre, Topeka. Talk with
owners about their experiences with their adoptions and see their Mustangs
up close.
The mission of the Midwest Mustang & Burro Saddle Club is to promote and preserve America’s living legends – the American wild horses and burros. We will educate the public and introduce them to the unique attributes of these fine equines. We will support new adopters and assist them to establish a strong relationship with their mustangs and burros. We will work to find loving homes for as many wild horses and burros as possible.
The Midwest Mustang and Burro Saddle Club has worked closely with BLM and
have earned their respect. BLM sponsored the Midwest Mustang and Burro
Saddle Club at the American Royal parade last year. The BLM refers a lot of
people to the Midwest Mustang and Burro Saddle Club who adopt mustangs. The
Midwest Mustang and Burro Saddle Club has an email group with members in
several Midwest states and also a group who does demonstrations, parades,
and promotions for the mustangs. The main goal of this Club is to make sure
people have a positive experience with their mustang and therefore more
successful adoptions. We meet four times a year and usually have an annual
meeting at Lake Shawnee in January. We hold de-spooking practices at
Heartland Ranch to help our member's horses to become better horses when out
in public.
We believe in the mustangs but also respect other breeds of horses.
Mustangs sometimes get negative responses from other breeds because they
have been exposed to the Mustang before all the gentle methods of training
horses were introduced. Thanks to the mustangs, people like John Lyons,
Linda and Pat Parelli, Dennis Reis, Cindy Branham now teach the more horse
whisperer type training. This method started by watching wild horses and
their body language. Thank goodness for this type training verses the old
cowboy way. All horses have become better because of this training. We hope
that one day the mustangs will get the respect they deserve.

Fun Fact for July
When formal grass lawns were first introduced into England in the 1700’s,
they were kept short by grazing animals and workers with hand tools. The
first cylinder mowers were invented in the 1800’s. They were pulled by
horses wearing leather boots to avoid damaging the grass.

Quote for July
“It’s a lot like nuts and bolts – if the rider’s nuts, the
horse bolts!” - Nicholas Evans
Liz’s Trail Corner
This is information we picked up from reading other newsletters and wanted
to share with our good customers. Summer is here and the urge to get out and
ride is stronger than any other time of the year. This is the time of year
to get some of the best training rides in and work up a nice sweat on your
horse. Have you ever wondered why your horse will actually work up into a
lather? That lather is called Latherin, a soap-like protein in horse sweat
and saliva, helps spread sweat over the coat, maximizing evaporation of
water for heat loss, and causing the foam that we see when horses sweat
profusely. Latherin is also found in saliva, which might explain the foam
often seen around a bitted horse's lips. When a horse overheats, the protein
is released, promoting the rapid movement of sweat water from the skin,
through the dense pelt, and to the surface for heat dissipation.
The best type of tack to use with intense training that could produce Latherin is..........BIOTHANE!! BIOTHANE is perfect because of the durability and the ease of upkeep - you can throw it in your dishwasher!
![]() |
BIOTHANE comes in a rainbow of beautiful colors that can be mixed and matched so you can create your own personal style while riding down the trail. Roy Frey Western is offering in-stock BIOTHANE headstalls and reins on sale for 20% off regular pricing thru the end of July. BIOTHANE tack items can be custom made to order. Allow 3 to 5 weeks for orders. Enjoy the beautiful season and ride down the trail in your own colorful style!
Enjoy the ride!

Donate Old Cowboy Boots to Winding
River Girl Scouts
Winding River Camp & Equestrian Center, Dearborn, MO is in need of “well
loved” and in good condition cowboy boots. Many of the 2nd – 8th grade girls
may only get the opportunity to come to Winding River once a year. They
often do not have boots or helmets so Winding River provides them. This has
become quite a challenge as well over a 1,000 young girls come to Winding
River for the Spring and Fall Program. We would welcome all sizes of used
boots. Roy Frey Western in Topeka and Y Bar H in Olathe has offered to serve
as drop off locations. If you would like more information about Winding
River you can go to:
www.theranchatloneoak.com or contact Linda Grimmett (816) 914-0490.
