The ride will be followed by a steak dinner, cooked by Josh & Gwen Hoy, Flying W Ranch with side dishes courtesy of Reser's Fine Foods, door prize drawings, a silent auction and a spirited live auction featuring items including (but not limited to) Montana Silversmith statues; Ariat, Justin, Tony Lama, Muck and Old West boots; Wall Jackets; Carpenter Farm Supply saddle racks; The Hat Doctor hat renovation certificates; Kansas Horse Council liability sign & membership; Flint Hills Leather custom made chinks; riding lessons from Foxeye Ranch, Cindy Branham, Liz Syverson, Bev King, and Jana Dreasher; Bruce Brock pen & ink art, private guided trail rides at Lake Perry, Saddle & Sirloin, Melvern Lake, Flint Hills Bar U Ranch, and KHC Elk City Ride; half day ride and stay for four in bunkhouse at Flying W Ranch; and a spot for two riders on the Purina/Better Horses Network Fall Dream Ride! Wright Flight, Inc. (www.WrightFlight.org) is named after the Wright brothers. Our mission is to use the inherent motivational power of aviation as a stimulus for students to set and achieve higher goals in their educational and personal development. We teach students, grades 6-12, that through commitment and hard work they can achieve the highest goals, including the opportunity to pilot a light aircraft.

Wright Flight, Inc. stresses the importance of education by requiring each student to sign a contract before beginning the program. This contract requires the students to set an individual self improvement goal, in addition to staying in school, off drugs, and out of gangs. If this requirement is not met, even though the student passes the Wright Flight "History of Flight" test, the child is not allowed to participate in the graduation. Once that requirement is met, then the student may experience the graduation thrill of a hands-on flight in a small aircraft as a co-pilot.

The goal for this trail ride is to help raise money to offset the fuel costs accumulated by the pilots volunteering their aircraft, time and money for these flights. Each year, volunteer pilots fly between 125 and 150 kids from participating schools. 100% of all donations for putting on the event and funds raised at the event go directly to the Kansas/Missouri Wright Flight Chapter. This event is sponsored by Heritage Tractor, Eisenhower State Park, Better Horses Network, Purina, Reser's Fine Foods, Foodcomm International, Flying W Ranch, TFM Communications and Roy Frey Western. Additional support from individuals and corporations would be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

The Wright Flight Program is a non-profit organization. Dewayne Burgess, a retired Air Force fighter pilot, and owner of Roy Frey Western in Topeka, KS, founded the original Kansas Chapter in 1992. He later encouraged friends in Missouri to establish a chapter and currently serves as President of the recently combined Kansas/Missouri Chapter.

Registration begins at 9:00 am on Sunday, May 30, 2010. Ride is from 11 am to 2 pm. Dinner and silent and live auction is immediately following the ride. Cost is $35 for ride and dinner; $15 for dinner and auction. Ride is limited to first 100 riders.

Camping reservations can be made through Eisenhower State Park at 785-528-4102. This event will be held rain or shine.

For more information or to register for the trail ride, contact Dewayne or Jo Turner Burgess at 785-232-0579 (info@royfreywestern.com) or Bob and Brandi Lewis at 785-256-4404 (trailhorses@hotmail.com attn: WFTR). Thank you in advance for your support of this worthy program!

Western Sundresses

Western Flip Flops

The hot new look for cowgirls was started by Taylor Swift last year – sundresses with fashion cowgirl boots. Check out our sundresses, short skirts and knit tops – so cute and comfortable for summer events.

A must have for a great summertime look is
a pair of bejeweled western flip flops.

Western Wild Straw Hats & Short Sleeve Shirt Time

Animal prints – especially Zebra, Leopard and Giraffe – are rocking the western world this year. From tack to boots, be sure to add some western wild to your lifestyle.

Just arrived for the warmer weather, colorful short sleeve shirts and straw hats! Get yours now while the selection is at its best!

Western Capris
I love wearing my western capris when I am running errands or when it is hot out! Check out the vintage denim with tan embroidery on the front pocket and matching jean style jacket. Western denim capris come in tan, brown, denim with circle rhinestones or rhinestone studs. Need a colorful denim jacket – we have them in aqua or lime for you to add your own decorations or monogramming. Check out the new Ύ length sleeve denim snap blouses – cute as a light jacket or over a cameo top.

Grooming Supplies for Spring
Make sure your barn and horse trailer are well supplied with horse grooming products for the spring rides. Here are some of our favorites:
          • All Eqyss products now 50% off! Take advantage of this great savings.
          • Pro-Equine leg protection boots now 25% off – gotta have good leg protection!
          • Pyranha Fly Spray – the best fly spray ever! Quarts or gallon sizes available.
          • Cashel Fly Masks – with or without ear or nose protection – great fitting masks.
          • eZall Total Body Wash – all natural, easy to spray on and just watch the dirt roll off – especially after
this muddy spring. Gives the horses coats a great shine.
          • Cowboy Magic – I just love using them because they make my hands feel good too! The Cowboy
Magic Detangler & Shine is my favorite. Love the Greenspot Remover for on the dogs after they have
            rolled in something smelly.

Stampede Strings For Riding in the Kansas Wind
If you are going to ride in Kansas, you will need a stampede string on your hat! Roy Frey Western is happy to add a stampede string to your hat – either a felt or a straw. Check out the new Atwood straws with built in stampede strings.
Cowgirls, if you like to ride in a visor, try one of the hair-on cowhide visors with the elastic coil. These visors are heavy enough not to blow off. The elastic coil is so comfortable and can be tightened if needed. I ride in one all the time and love it!

4 New Western Dishware Patterns
What do you call a textured turquoise star in the middle of a deep, rich chocolate plate? – western beautiful! Let me introduce the new Western Star dishware pattern. This plate fits perfectly on a turquoise charger for a striking tablescape. It comes in a set of 16 pieces – 4 dinner plates, 4 bowls, 4 salad plates and 4 mugs.

Western Belt is the newest porcelain dinnerware addition to our home dιcor department – but wait – the dishware set won’t be here until late spring. It is a dark saddle brown base color with an image of a tooled western belt encircling the pieces. It is wonderful! But even better are the accessory pieces – which are here now. I especially liked the baking pans that come with a black iron caddy and lids. The baking pans have oven-save removable silicone handles too! It will coordinate perfectly with the Old West and Barbwire pattern we constantly stock. This new pattern is replacing the Buckeroo stoneware dishware that the manufacturer has discontinued.

New from Montana Silversmith are two wonderful western patterns: Barbwire in saddle brown with rust colored wire trim and tooled leather. Tooled leather is rich contrasting brown tones on an ivory base plate. Both patterns come in a set of 16 pieces – 4 dinner plates, 4 bowls, 4 salad plates and 4 mugs. Both patterns will mix and match with the Montana Silversmiths “Brands” dishware pattern. Accessory pieces are also available.

Surprise your Mother with this "Deliciously Simple" Philadelphia Vanilla Mousse Cheesecake for desert at your Mother's Day dinner. Also makes a great dish to take to a graduation celebration or serve at your Memorial Day cook-out with friends and family. My neighbor and dear friend made this cheesecake and brought me a piece last week while I was recovering from pneumonia. It was delicious and made me feel much better! She topped it with fresh strawberries that were wonderful. You can use your favorite fruit or it is yummy just plain. This recipe is from Kraft Foods in the May 2010 "Real Simple" magazine.

Philadelphia Vanilla Mousse Cheesecake
20 NILLA Wafers, crushed (about 1 ½ cups)
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
4 pkg. (8 oz. each) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened, divided
1 cup sugar, divided
1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. vanilla, divided
3 eggs
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed.

Heat oven to 325o F. Mix wafer crumbs and butter; press onto bottom of 9-inch springform pan.

Beat 3 pkg. cream cheese, Ύ cup sugar and 1 Tbsp. vanilla with mixer until well blended. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing on low speed after each just until blended. Pour over crust.

Bake 50 to 55 min. or until center is almost set. Run knife around rim of pan to loosen cake; cool completely in pan.

Beat remaining cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with mixer in large bowl until well blended. Whisk in COOL WHIP; spread over cheesecake. Refrigerate 4 hours. Remove rim of pan before serving cheesecake. Garnish with fresh berries if desired.

Weather Lore for May
          • Hoar frost on May 1st indicates a good harvest.
          • A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay.
          • In the middle of May come the tail of winter.

Full Flower moon – Flowers spring forth in abundance this month. Some Algonquin tribes knew this full moon as the Corn Planting Moorn or the Milk Moon. – from The Old Farmer's Almanac (http://www.almanac.com)

Quote for May
"There is something about riding down the street on a prancing horse that makes you feel like something even when you ain't a thing."
                                                                                                ~ Will Rogers

Liz's Trail Corner – May Trail Tip
I read a great trail riding article about equine vision and how it can impact trail behavior. The article in its entirety can be found at The Horse.com. It was written by Les Sellnow from his book Happy Trails. Here is a synopsis of it:

Sometimes we have a difficult time figuring out our horse's behavior. A good dependable horse who has "been there and done that" might suddenly become skittish in familiar territory. What's going on? Windy days seem to make some horses unsettled with blowing leaves coupled with a flying plastic bag which can terrorize a seasoned horse. But why? It's all in how you look at it. Horses are prey animals. Their vision is very different from ours. Horses have a broad range of view and they are not as able as we are to focus on a particular item. Their vision is both binocular and monocular. Humans (who are predators) have binocular vision with ability to focus. Humans can quickly focus on an object and recognize it and the horse who has a broader field of vision has greater difficulty in focusing on an object. Prey animals are wired to avoid danger, and sometimes a blowing leaf can cause your pony to go into "survivor mode" and avoid that "predator."
