Volume 5, Number 9
Hello Friends!
I hope you had a great weekend and were able to dodge some of the rain. We regretfully had to cancel our Spring Dream Ride in the Flint Hills because of all the rain they had and what was forecasted. With the cancellation of the ride, my son Brent, and friends, Mark Burkdoll and Shelly Johnson, headed south to Wayne, Oklahoma to see our horses that were getting trained by Todd Wright. Todd is doing a super job training and out on his own at the beautiful facility owned by David James. If you are looking for a reining horse trainer, I would recommend giving Todd a call at 785/229-7874.
Due to a low number of entries, we have condensed our Million Dollar Reining Clinic scheduled for May 30th & 31st, at the Kansas ExpoCentre in Topeka to using one clinician. Brent Wright will be the clinician at this year’s clinic in Topeka. We presently have 9 signed up and will take 5 more riders. We are still planning on the special HOW Meeting on Friday night, May 29th. We will feature 20 riders in the Jackpot class and Brent will critique each rider after their ride. On Saturday evening, we will have a steak fry along with some great entertainment. The arena will be open for riding for the clinic participants and a limited number of outside riders. Make sure you mark your calendar for May 29,30, & 31st and join us for a weekend of great riding education. For information about the clinic and the Friday night Horse Owner Workshop, give me a call at 785/418-6047 or e-mail me at ernest_rodina@purina-mills.com.
We have a couple of more Horse Owner Workshops (HOW Meetings) coming up. On Tuesday evening, May 12th, at the Clasbey Center in Savannah, MO, Purina Dealers, Bit of The West and UPCO, along with the Extension Office and Boehringer will be putting on an Equine meeting. The information is inside this newsletter. A complimentary hamburger fry before the meeting will be served. For information call Jim Humphrey at the Extension Office in Savannah, MO at 816/324-3147.
Then on Tuesday night, May 19th, CG Ace Hardware in Council Grove along with Reyer’s Country Store in Strong City, KS, will be hosting a HOW event at the Morris County Fairgrounds in Council Grove, KS. A barbeque will be served at 6:00 pm and follow with the meeting. I will be talking about Equine Nutrition and we have also the Ranch Rodeo Team from Lonesome Pine Ranch & Buck Creek Ranch putting on a session on Horse Sense 101. To RSVP give Reyers a call at 620/273-6229.
Don’t forget the Trail Ride that The Family Center is hosting this weekend at Hillsdale Lake near Paola, KS. They have all kinds of prizes, good food, and good riding planned for this weekend. Call Stacey Oney at the store at 816/884-6100.

Meadow Muffins or Cookie Bars |

Ingredients:
4 qts. sweet feed
2 cups bran or bran cereal
2 cups oats (can use Quaker oats from grocery store) (optional)
1 - 12-oz. can frozen apple juice concentrate
5-6 carrots, chopped (use food processor)
3 apples, chopped (optional)
2 cups raisins (optional)
2-3 cups molasses
1-1/2 to 2 cups Karo corn syrup
5 eggs
2-3 cups corn oil
2 tblsp. baking powder
Preheat oven to 350o. In a huge bowl, add flour and water,
alternating until you have a cake-like batter that is very chunky. If the
batter looks too thick, just add a little more water -- or if it looks too thin,
add a little more flour. It just depends on how much of the optional
ingredients you have elected to add.
Spray muffin tins (mini muffins are best) with oil and drop by spoonfuls in
tins. They will rise a little, so don't overfill. Bake at 350o
for 10-15 mins. Cool on a paper towel.
-OR- You can pour batter into a large baking pan (well-greased) and make
cookie bars. Bake until center is dry and firm (probably 30-60 mins.,
depending on pan size. Let cool overnight or for several hours. Cut
into squares. This makes a huge amount (2 grocery bags full) -- so you may
want to cut the recipe in half if you don't want this much.

Thoughts
To Ponder
By Charley Green

Appreciation Those were great old days, Will would say in later years about Vaudeville, but darn it, any old days are great old days. Even the tough ones, after they are over, you can look back on them with great memories. Life is always full of opportunities, challenges and lessons and at times some of those good old days don't seem to be so good. Later on, when looking back, we realize how special most of those times and the people we met along the way were in defining who we are today. Those times and events are what give us a great memories to share, pass on and hopefully bring us a better life today. I asked a friend if he could place a value on his life experiences. He said, "Some of them at the time were ten cent experiences I wouldn't take a million dollars for today." You and I've heard some folks say, and have probably said it ourselves, "If I'd only known then what I know now, my life would be so much different today." Well, what's wrong with us taking all that acquired knowledge from yesterday and make our lives better today? Remember, today can be one of the good ol' days tomorrow. |
