Volume 2, Number 20

Hello Friends!

I hope all is well with all of you. We are right in the middle of our Horse Health Fairs that are being held throughout the district. Make sure you make the ones coming up this week. Oct.17th, Tuesday night at Premier Farm & Ranch in St. Joe. Oct.18th, Wednesday night at Mainstreet Hardware & Farm Supply in Grain Valley, MO. Oct.19th, Thursday night at the VFW Hall in Garnett, KS.

Also, don’t forget the Richard Shrake Clinic coming up on Oct.28 & 29th at the Fairgrounds in Sedalia, MO. There is still room to come in and ride in this two-day clinic. Also there will be a special demonstration and clinic held on Saturday night for the public that we hope you can attend. I am really looking forward to this weekend; it is going to be a very educational and fun time. Even yours truly has signed up to ride. For more information about joining us, call Terri DeLouche at 660/441-1697.

Information about these and more events are in the calendar section.

With hay being short in supply this year, you might want to consider Horse Chow 100 to replace or stretch your hay portion of their diet. You can replace pound for pound with your horses hay portion.

For some folks it might be pheasant, quail, or duck hunting. But I have to tell you I am really looking forward to my trip this November 9 through 11 to the Flying W Ranch in Clements, Kansas. My friends, Josh Hoy and Newt Dodge, have invited me to join them on a two-night and three-day cattle drive from the Flying W to Cassoday, Kansas. We will be driving about 30 head of Longhorn cows to a winter pasture. I have purchased my bedroll and “wild rag” and I can’t hardly wait. They will be bringing their Chuckwagon, and we will be sleeping in our bedrolls in the middle of the Flint Hills. I am sure I will be writing about it. It could be cold, but it will be a great time!

I want to thank all of you who are doing business with us. For those of you who aren’t using Purina feed, we would like to team up with you and try to earn your business. Let me know if we can be of help in anyway.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Take The Brakes Off

Here’s the scenario. You take your horse to the mounting block, get him all squared up, you check your girth and during all this time he is standing quietly with his head level. You put your foot in the stirrup, gather the reins up, start to lift up in the saddle and bingo, his head comes up and he either moves forward or sideways, dragging you with him. There you are half on and half off. This not only looks pretty funny, it’s very dangerous.

This is a habit that we all get into that is so easy to just let it ride, thinking you will deal with it another time. Pick a time when you are not hurried and can spend the time with your horse just working on getting him to stand still. When riding at the walk bring him to a halt then let the reins drop, giving him the signal that it is time to stand still and relax. Many riders sit there holding against the horse’s mouth. In other words the brakes are always on and he can’t lower his head and relax, so he fidgets.

If he is trying to go forward, put him in a small circle with one rein until he comes to a stop, then immediately let go of the rein and don’t pick it up again unless he moves out.  If he does, then do it again waiting for the stop. Pretty soon you can have your horse standing all quiet and relaxed, and then and only then are you ready for the mounting block.
