Volume 3, Number 14
Hello, Friends! Last week’s evenings had to be the nicest and most enjoyable so far this summer as far as weather goes. Twice, my son Brent and I had the opportunity to go out to Bichlemeyer Land & Cattle Company’s Ranch at Williamsburg, KS and ride for a couple of hours in the evening. It doesn’t get much better than that. Also, a highlight of my week was maybe getting this lead change thing figured out. I went down on Saturday and rode at Brent Wrights and with his help, I was able to get two in a row! Wow! This lead change thing to me has kind of been like what Organic Chemistry was for me in college -- it has taken me a while to get it figured out.
Just a note if any of you are interested in competing in reining or getting
hooked up, the Kansas Reining Horse Assn. is holding a fun show at Brent Wrights
in Ottawa. The date of the event is Saturday, July 28th. If you would like
information, I would give Art Canright a call at 816/536-2148.
Have you all had
the opportunity to check out “Inside Reining” on RFD TV? I watched it
this morning and saw my buddy, David Solum of Mid America Equine Sales, on the
program. I really enjoy watching that program every Sunday morning.
Due to a cancellation of a Kansas event for Western Music Singers, Belinda Gail and Curly Musgrave, we were able to schedule them on Friday night, July 27th, at the Community Building in Cottonwood Falls, KS. I never get tired of hearing them sing. (Detailed information is included in the calendar section.)
I want to welcome Allyn Mann and Adequan to the Better Horses Corporate Family. We are so excited to team up with Adequan and have them be a part of Better Horses Network. They are a tremendous company and asset to the Equine Industry.
Let’s welcome Landscapers Haven Rock N’ Feed Supply in Grain Valley, MO as our new Purina Dealer in the area. They are located just east of Main by the railroad tracks and their phone number is 816/443-3044. Welcome Shawn and Amanda McNew to our Purina Team.
For those of you loyal listeners of Better Horses Radio in the Topeka, Kansas area, we changed homes. We are on Sunday mornings at 6:00am, but now on Country Legends 106.9 FM. We are really excited to be a part of this great FM station in Topeka. You can always go to www.betterhorsesradio.com and check us out.
If you get a chance, go to the www.betteranimals.com and check out the website. A neat page is “Show & Tell” and click what animal species you want. Also make sure you check out Animal Makeover TV on RFD TV. I think our theme tells it all, “Animals Make Better People, and We Make Better Animals”.
Let me know if I can be of help.
Happy Trails!
Ernie
4 Missing Horse - Located 3
As you know, we made an appeal in the last newsletter for information to help Michelle Orlovetz find her two chestnut horses that were missing since May in Gridley, KS. We are happy to report that Michelle notified us that she was able to find the trainer and retrieve her horse, Christmas Fire. Michelle, we are glad that everything worked out well for you.

Horse Management Tip
One Step at a Time
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
We never want to ask more from our horse than he is ready to give, and we always want to reward him by releasing the pressure, so when we ask him again, he will know to respond positively and the pressure will cease. "This is when learning takes place".
For example, your horse doesn't want to enter the wash rack. He may not feel comfortable entering small spaces. Start by working him through narrow places, between trees, jump stands, anyplace that is narrow where you can help him to follow you anywhere. Then take him back to the wash rack and ask him only to approach it, not enter, then turn and take him away praising him. Come back and again approach the wash area, only this time ask him to get one or two steps further, then leave again, making him think that's all you really wanted him to do. Pretty soon he will realize that you aren't going to take him any further than he's ready to go. If we punish a horse whether he is afraid or just doesn't want to do something, like entering a wash rack, think what he thinks, "well, why would I want to go in there, they smack me every time I stop".
Remember to never start anything unless you have the time to devote to making your horse feel comfortable and safe. If you rush him into something he's not prepared for, you will certainly end up with a bigger problem than when you started.
