Volume 3, Number 18
Hello, Friends!
I am sorry I am a few days late, but have a lot going on. It is just a few days before our 8th Annual Dream Ride at the Flying W Ranch, and I am looking forward to seeing everyone. Beginning about this Saturday, I will be watching the long-range forecast. I really don’t know why because it always changes by the time the ride gets here. With the blizzard and frigid weather during my clinics in February and the 17.5 inches of rain during this year’s Cowboy Days, I am bound to have some good luck and weather for the Dream Ride!
If you are in the Harrisonville, MO area on Oct. 5, 6,or 7th, make sure you stop by the Family Center and see Priefert’s Radar, one of the world’s tallest horses. I will be there on Saturday, the 6th, along with the Mendenhall Miniatures.
Also, you will not want to miss the XETC Championships at Kemper Arena during the American Royal Barbeque. They will be held on Friday, Oct. 5th, and Saturday, Oct.6th, at 6:30 pm. Very exciting to watch -- it is “calf roping drag racing”. You will see many of the best calf ropers in the country. Check it out on www.goldbucklenetwork.com. (See Calendar section below for more details.)
If you have not tried Purina’s Strategy® you need to get in touch with your local dealer or rep and get on the Strategy® Challenge. This is an excellent chance to show you what Purina feed can do for your horse or horses. Don’t hesitate to e-mail me or call me at (785) 418-6047.
Better Horses Radio is excited to be picked up by KTJJ FM radio out of Farmington and Festus, MO. We begin airing the first Sunday in October.
I hope that all of you are doing fine, and let me know if I can be of help in any way.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
FEAR OF WATER
by Sally Dwyer
Seven Oaks Ranch
www.sevenoaksranch.com
Have you ever gone on a trail ride with friends and when you come to a creek your horse won't cross? So you either have a big fight with your horse or you go back and wait for your friends to return from their great trail ride.
It's time for you to work on anything but water. Make sure you can lead him over obstacles on the ground such as a tarp or a rubber mat. Your horse should approach the obstacle straight on with his head down, as horses cannot see things directly below their heads and need to have their heads lowered.
Once you have worked with leading him across obstacles, then you can begin riding him over them. Incorporate objects in a ride through the pasture so he will learn that these things can pop up at anytime. After you gained his trust that he will not be harmed in going over numerous items, then introduce him to a water puddle. The bigger the better, as your horse will either try to go around or jump over the puddle. Lead him through first with you walking into the puddle, showing him that it's safe to step into the water. Then, as before, ride him through gradually working up to larger bodies of water such as creeks.
Next time you go on a trail ride, you will be on the other side of the creek with the rest of the group, enjoying the ride.
Horsey Treat Recipe
Here's an easy to make "granola" treat for your special horse . . .
Horse Granola
2 cups oats
1 cup molasses
1/2 finely chopped apple
1/4 cup water
1 chopped carrot (optional)
First, mix everything together -- it should be sticky. Bake in oven at 425o
for about 10 minutes.
When time is up, leave the grain in the oven until the oven is cool. A
great granola treat for your
best buddy!
A good friend of mine, Charley Green, is author of Will Rogers Apropos Thoughts, Quotes & Anecdotes on Elections & Politics and also Will Rogers & Charley which will be coming out in late September. Thoughts To Ponder
By Charley Green
On A.D.D.
With all this talk promoting A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder),
I got to thinking whether or not I might have some of the symptoms of this so
called disease. After a complete and thorough self-examination, I came to
the conclusion that what I really had was M.D.D. -- Money Deficit Disorder!
I didn't need a fancy doctor or high flying pharmaceutical company to
diagnose my condition. All I had to do was look at my checking account and
the bills due to realize I've got a problem.
So I decided to follow the doctor's credo, "Heal Thyself," and get to
work.
