Volume 4, Number 12

Hello, Friends!

I hope all is well with you. I am right in the middle of getting geared up for the 5th Annual Old West Cowboy Days in Ottawa, Kansas this coming weekend. This past weekend between working the Extreme Cowboy Race at the Saddle and Sirloin Club and putting on the Cowboy Day’s Sponsor Barbeque and Concert, things got pretty busy.

Congratulations goes out to Bill Hull from the Saddle & Sirloin Club and Craig Cameron for putting on a great Extreme Cowboy Race. An added attraction was they held a sale on Saturday evening with horses that competed in the competition. The bottom line is a good broke horse still brings a good price. On Saturday evening before and after the horse sale, buyers and sellers were entertained by cowboy poet, Geff Dawson, and western music singer and songwriter, RW Hampton. The Extreme Cowboy Race and Sale was definitely a great event. I really look forward to seeing it get bigger and bigger.

Don’t miss the 5th Annual Old West Cowboy Days Celebration and Music Show this weekend beginning Friday, June 27th, and going through Sunday, June 29th. The celebration kicks off Friday night with a catered reception and the beginning of the Western Art Show and Sale at the Railroad Depot Museum. Earl Kuhn is the featured artist and will have a great showing of his Western Art. This will run through Sunday afternoon until 3:00pm. Besides the Cattle Drive and Parade on Saturday morning along with two Western Days of Celebration in Forest Park, you will definitely not want to miss the Western Music Show Saturday night at Municipal Auditorium in Ottawa. Western Music great, RW Hampton, will entertain you to the fullest along with Johnny Western and cowboy poet, Geff Dawson. Go to our website at www.oldwestcowboydays.com and find out all about it. I hope to see you in Ottawa this weekend.

Purina’s WellSolve Diets are now out and are working great. Along with our new diets, we are still running Strategy® Horse Feed Challenges. Let me know if I can be of  help to you by either e-mailing me or giving me a call at 785/418-6047.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

Fresh, Clean Water
By Ernie Rodina

Keep the water fresh and clean for your horse or horses this summer. The fresher and cleaner the water, the more your horse or horses will consume.

In using a water tank, I try to top off the water every day to attempt to keep it cooler and cleaner. I also change the tank at least once every other week.

In watering your horse in a bucket in a stall, always give them a fresh bucket each day. Water is the number one nutrient required by your horse, so it is important to attempt to provide the best.

Horsey Treat Recipe

"I Didn't Buck Today" Treats

2 sticks butter or margarine
¾ cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup raisins
2 cups rolled oats or oatmeal
1 cup alfalfa pellets (the little ones that are cylindrical and about a ½" long--not the pressed squares)

Mix butter with sugar and eggs until smooth.  Add dry ingredients slowly.  Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet -- bake for about 8 minutes at 350o.
These have a tendency to go very quickly at horse shows!  The horses love them!

Thoughts To Ponder

By Charley Green

                                           Perception

One time a large construction company hired me as a field superintendent to manage projects.  The management
folks had assigned a difficult job for my crew to take on and, needless to say, the workers began questioning and
grumbling on why management always gave us the dirty work.

I explained to them why we had been assigned the job.
First:  If the project had been fun, the management folks would've done it.
Secondly:  If it'd been easy, they would've had ladies doing it.
Since it was neither fun nor easy, they gave it to us . . .
because we're the best at doing and completing the tough and dirty jobs.    J
