Volume 5, Number 11
Hello Friends!
I apologize for being a couple of days late with this edition. Like always, it seems there is a bunch of stuff going on. By now, many of you have received your summer edition of the Better Horses Network publication. If you are not receiving it, you can go to our website at www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and subscribe. We have started a new segment in our paper called “Horse Bits”. This is for you to let us know different things that have happened or are happening in your area. Send your information to Janice Pack by e-mailing me at ernie@betterhorsesradio.com .
In the Summer Edition of Better Horses Network, we have launched the 2nd Annual Unbelievable Horse Happening at this year’s American Royal. This show is the ULTIMATE OPEN HORSE SHOW, and the kids love it. We had over 1700 entries last year and don’t expect any less this year. We expanded the show to an extra day along with adding the American Royal’s Equine and Ranch Expo during this weekend. All of this will be going on during the American Royal’s PRCA Rodeo Weekend. Make sure you mark the Oct.22nd thru Oct.25th down as the weekend to be at the Royal.
Coming up next weekend at the Show Me Buckskin Association horse show in Cleveland, MO is a chance to attend a Purina HOW event. The Horse Owners Workshop and Exhibitor’s BBQ is Saturday, June 13th, following the show around 7:00 pm. Lone Wolf Arena is in Cleveland, MO. You can go to www.showmebuckskin.tripod.com .
Also, we are presently working on putting together
our Texas Capital Edition of the Better Horses Network publication. This
will be our 2nd edition that we will be sending out to over 10,000
horse owners in the North Texas area. I know some of our readers of this
electronic message are from Texas and would be interested in this. If any would
like to advertise, either call me at 785/418-6047 or e-mail me at
ernie@betterhorsesradio.com .
Coming up next week is the Kansas State High School Rodeo Championship in
Topeka, Kansas. The action starts next Friday, June 12th and runs
through Sunday, June 14th at the Kansas ExpoCentre in Topeka, Kansas.
This is followed by the Missouri State High School Rodeo Championship at Boone
County Fairgrounds in Columbia, MO June 18th thru 20th.
If any of you are around Lone Jack, Missouri this weekend, you can see a great Missouri High School Rodeo at the Ransom Heart Ranch located at 204 East Casey Road. I guarantee it will be a great rodeo with both the Ransom Heart Ranch and Open Range Fellowship putting this on.
I am planning on taking my family this Friday night to Strong City, Kansas to attend the great PRCA Flint Hills Rodeo and have a great dinner at the Grand Central Hotel. This rodeo begins Friday night and runs through Sunday afternoon.
Our Old West Cowboy Days in Ottawa are just around the corner, being held the weekend of June 26, 27, & 28th. I really hope you can join me for this great weekend featuring RW Hampton at the music show on Saturday night. We have many great booths in the park along with some great activities including the colt-starting by Kerry Kuhn. We also plan to hold a Tack Swap on both Saturday and Sunday in the park. For information about getting a booth, call Kristi or Amber at 785/242-1411. There is more information in this edition on the calendar or go to www.oldwestcowboydays.com. I hope that you come to Ottawa Kansas and join us for Cowboy Days.
Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race is coming to Kansas City on June 19th through June 21st at the Saddle & Sirloin Club. The Saddle & Sirloin Club is located at 144th and Holmes Road and is a great setting for this great event. Along with the race, on Saturday night at 6:00 they will be having a special Horse Sale involving horses that have gone through the course.
Join the Better Horses Radio Road Show on June 18th, Thursday night at Cavendars Western Store at the Legends in Kansas City. We are having an Extreme Cowboy Race Weekend Warm-Up at the store. Craig Cameron will be at the store from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm to answer questions and autographs. Stop by and join us for a fun evening filled with entertainment and specials in the store.
If you haven’t tried the new Purina Horse Feeds you need to go to www.purinadifference.com and sign up for a feed trial. The results and response we are getting back are just tremendous. If I can be of help with any of your feed needs, don’t hesitate to give me a call at 785/418-6047.
I hope that we run into each other this Summer at
some of these great events that are coming up. Let me know if I can be of
help.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

You’re an 19-year-old kid. You’re critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8–1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the Medi-Vac helicopters to stop coming in. You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you’re not getting out. Your family is half way around the world—12,000 miles away—and you’ll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Ed Freeman is coming for you. He’s not Medi-Vac, so it’s not his job, but he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He’s coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the doctors and nurses. And, he kept coming back…13 more times…and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died last Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at the age of 80, in Boise, ID… may God rest his soul. Medal of Honor Winner

Do You Ever Forget To Turn Off The Water? by Ernie Rodina Do you ever forget to turn off the water? Well, I used to all the time. I mentioned this before -- but I learned from Nick O'Dell, a cutting horse trainer in southeast Kansas, to always put your cap on backwards to remind you that the water is still on. Try it . . . eventually it works! |
Horsey Treat Recipe
The showers may be over -- we're seeing more and more sunshine these
days here in the Midwest! Time to break out the party mix!
Try this
special treat for your favorite horse -- but good for people to munch on, too!
|
Pony/People Party Mix |
Ingredients:
Corn Chex
Apple Cinnamon Cheerios
Corn Bran
Honey Combs
Any horsey/people treats -- sugar cubes, etc.
Mix together and put in a big bowl in the barn aisle. (Use mostly corn and
oat cereals that are square, large or chunky types --
stay away from wheat cereals.)
People and horses can pick away at this special treat all day!

Challenges Money, horse racing and women are three things the boys just can't figure out. - Will Rogers Most of you will agree -- experience has taught us this plain truth, "If it seems simple, it ain't." That applies to the understanding of money issues, risk and relationships. It doesn't have to be complicated, although you just may need to get someone else's perspective on some of these things before tackling them. Bear in mind when asking someone's advice or opinion -- consider the source and depth of their experience, as professed wisdom isn't always bona fide wisdom. |
