Volume 5, Number 19

Good Morning!

I hope all of you had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather this past weekend. I spent most of the weekend at the America Royal's First Barrel Race. Congratulations to Jana Barcus and team for an excellent show. Also congratulations to the three winners for the three days! Jeannie Anderson on Friday, and Caitlan Benjamin took first place on Saturday and Sunday! I might mention that their horses are powered by Purina Feeds with Jeannie feeding Horseman's Edge and Caitlan feeding Ultium!

Last weekend was the 2009 El Cultura Expo at Kemper Arena which was put on by a Chris Tomas and team for the Hispanic Community in the area. They really focused on the Hispanic Equine Culture and the show was UNBELIEVABLE!  It was a great honor for me to be able to carry the American Flag during the opening ceremony.

You won't want to miss the American Royal Cutting Horse Show beginning this Wednesday and finishing up with the Finals on Saturday night. This Cutting is becoming bigger and better each year. Go to www.americanroyal.com to find out more about this great event.

This weekend we take the trip to Amarillo to attend the WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo.  I am really looking forward to this trip being the host of one of the two buses coming from our area. Mark DiCarlo will be hosting the other bus filled up with our friends from the Saddle & Sirloin Club.  If you happen to be in Amarillo this coming weekend, come by our reception at the Fifth Season Hotel located right on the Interstate. We will be serving a brisket dinner and entertainment sponsored by Jim Bell's in Cottonwood Falls, Boulevard Brewery, and Purina Mills.  The reception will take place on Saturday, Nov.14th, from 3:00 until 5:00pm.  I hope to see you in Amarillo . Good luck to the Buck Creek/Lonesome Pine Ranch Team!!!

DON'T MISS!   You won't want to miss a Purina HOW Event that will be held at JM Quarter Horses on Monday evening, Nov.23rd, at 6:00 pm. Jim Holland and his family will be hosting "The Fundamentals of the Cow Horse" presented by AQHA World Champion Brad Lund. The doors will open at 6:00 pm with a complimentary hamburger fry. The meeting will also include an Equine Nutrition meeting put on by Purina Mills, and a demonstration on Equine Massage Therapy presented by Rhonda Martin. This event is sponsored by Y Bar H Outpost & Pet Supply in Olathe, KS and Purina Mills. Jim Holland's facility is located at 12635 W. 183rd in Bucyrus, Kansas. (5 miles east of 169 Hwy on 183rd). Please RSVP by noon on Monday, Nov. 23rd, at (913) 764-4626. We hope that you can join us!

Horse Property For Sale:  Approx. 2500 Sq. Ft. 3 bedroom ranch home with 3 stall barn on 12 acres. The home is located 3 miles southwest of Ottawa, Kansas on blacktop road. Facility has great frontage road along with horse-safe fencing. $295,000. Call me at 785/418-6047 or email me at ernie@betterhorsesradio.com for more information.

Better Horses Radio is going on TV. Better Horses Radio will be doing a weekly segment, Horse 'N Around, on the new TV program,
AG AM in Kansas. This will be a 4-7 minute segment that will feature the Equine Industry in Kansas. I am a little nervous since my
mother told me I only have a face for radio. This show will begin airing in the Topeka market in the next 60 days.

Please keep our son, Luke, and all of the men and women in the armed forces in your prayers. Luke is presently deployed in Afghanistan with the Marines. Also keep in your prayers Freddie Horn of Harrisonville, MO who is fighting a battle with cancer.

It was great to run into many of you the last couple of weeks. Please let me know if there is any way I can be of  help.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

                              Saddle & Tack Care

November would be a great time to get all
your tack cleaned and oiled. This will preserve
your saddles and tack and also make them
            safer.

The Lexol Program has a great program to
use when cleaning and oiling your saddles
            and tack.

Horsey Treat Recipe

     Try this special Fall Treat
     for your favorite horse --

        "Autumn Oaties"

Dry Ingredients:
2 cups white or yellow corn meal
3 cups old-fashioned oats (not instant)
2 cup flaxseed OR wheat germ OR whole oats OR bran OR horse grain of choice
1 cup non-fat dry milk powder
1 tblsp. baking powder
6 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tblsp. salt

Wet Ingredients
:
2 cups light or dark molasses (one 16-oz. jar) OR corn syrup OR combination
1 cup corn oil
Water to moisten (do this last)

Preheat oven to 275oF.  In a big bowl, mix together the dry ingredients.  Add the wet ingredients and stir thoroughly to blend -- about 2 or 3 minutes.  Add enough water to make a stiff dough, but don't add too much.  Divide the dough between 2 lightly greased jelly-roll pans (looks like a cookie sheet with shallow rims on sides).  Using your hands, pat the dough gently to level it off and fill each pan completed.  Bake at 275oF for one hour.

After an hour, remove from the oven.  Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, score into 1- or 2-inch blocks.  You don't have to cut all the way through -- just make indentations.

Return to the oven and bake until almost all the water has evaporated -- usually around another half hour (depending on humidity, characteristics of ingredients, etc.).  Don't brown the treats -- just dry them out.  Cool in the pan and then break into pieces along the score marks.  Will keep indefinitely in a tightly closed container.

A great autumn treat for your special horse!

Thoughts To Ponder

                       By Charley Green

Ride with the Brand

"You don't get ahead in show business
                                      by being like somebody else."
                                                                            -Will Rogers

One of those marketing gurus told a friend of mine he needed to brand himself.
Well, my friend got right in that guru's face and hollered; "Whoa there partner!
Ain’t nobody going to slap a hot iron to my rump!"

After he settled down a bit this guru explained what this branding business was
all about. "It means you have to think of yourself as a brand name that needs to
be recognized and marketed so folks will buy what you're selling. It's like the
product Wheaties, which is known as the 'Breakfast of Champions.'"

My friend pondered this for a moment and then said he didn't think he wanted to
be known as a breakfast cereal. That guru looked at him in a patronizing way for
a couple of seconds, then told him the "Breakfast of Champions" tag was only to
give him an idea of how effective a brand name can be.

Now, my friend finally understands the purpose of having his own personal brand.
It's to help folks remember what he's about; associating value with what he's
promoting and buying what he's selling; knowing if they're not satisfied he'll make
it good because the integrity of his word is part of his brand.

So choose your brand wisely and live it, because it will become your legacy.
