Hello Friends!
I hope all is well with you. It seems as though my cracked
ribs are finally behind me, and after 30 days I am finally sleeping back
in a bed versus the recliner. We have had a great run of Purina Horse
Owner Workshops, and it was great to see many of you there.
As I am writing this, I am in Marshall, Texas attending
the Martha Josey Junior World Barrel Championships. Since attending last
year, I have looked forward to coming back to see everyone. They have some
great catfish down here also.
There are plenty of horse activities to go to in May. Make
sure you check out
www.betterhorsesnetwork.com and go to the calendar. The National
Versatility Ranch Horse Association is holding a Schooling Clinic on May
22nd & 23rd at the Saddle & Sirloin Club in Kansas City. For more
information call 816/942-6900. It should be a great time.
Also, there are a couple of good sales going on in the
region. The Farmers & Ranchers Livestock Comm. Co. is holding their Spring
Spectacular Horse Sale in Salina, KS on May 15th & 16th. Then the next
week, Mid-America Equine Sales under the new ownership of Jim Watson, will
be holding their Spring Spectacular Performance Horse Sale on Saturday,
May 22nd, at the Lucky J Arena in Carthage, MO.
Have we got a Special Dream Ride Scheduled for you this
Fall! This Sept.24,25, & 26th will be our 11th Annual Dream Ride in the
Flint Hills. It will be held at the Flying W Ranch near Cottonwood Falls,
KS. Purina Mills will be tying an exciting Promotion in with some selected
rides across the country, and our Dream Ride will be one of them. Plans
are to have RFD TV’s Best Of America By Horseback team headed up by Tom
Seay to be our official trail boss. Along with Tom Seay, you will have the
opportunity to ride and learn with RFD TV's Ken McNabb and family. It will
be a great weekend. Make sure you call Suzan Barnes at the Grand Central
Hotel in Cottonwood Falls, KS to get your reservations in early.
There are still a few Horse Owner Workshops planned for
May if you would like to attend. This gets the youth qualified for
Purina's Unbelievable Horse Happening to be held this fall at the American
Royal.
Have you checked out the new Purina Horse Products
developed by their Research Team? Strategy Healthy Edge and Ultium Growth
are sure proving out to be winners. To try them out go to

get in touch with me at
ernie@betterhorsesradio.com.

Horse Management Tip

Patience, Patience, Patience!
Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to hear many great equine
clinicians. Being described by many, as a "Hummingbird On Speed," it has
sometimes been a challenge to me to have patience and take it a step at a time.
Struggling to discipline my self to "slow down," I find it is so helpful to have
patience with my horse and work on little steps to improve their performance.
Whether it is getting my horse softer in response to the bit or moving off
pressure with my leg -- if I can get just the smallest improvement in the my
horse's performance each time I ride, I am training my horse! I think there is
sometimes a fine line between training your horse and constantly picking on your
horse. The important thing to remember in working with your horse is to take it
a step at a time, and stay consistent, be patient, and slow down.
Watching your horse improve consistently is really UNBELIVABLE! So enjoy your
horse, family, and friends and hope to see you soon!

Thoughts To Ponder

Being Called to Ante Up
This one makes me squirm, break out in a cold sweat wanting to duck and
run. It happens when someone of significance in my life holds me accountable
for something I gave my word I was gonna do, or promised to do, then didn't
step up and do it.
As an example, some of us could be telling folks we're committed to
following a dream; getting out of debt, not taking on any more; building a
better relationship with family, friends and cohorts; quit smoking, etc. We
make these kinds of commitments in front of others saying we'll do whatever
it takes to realize our goal and make it happen.
Well, those folks don't forget our talking and after a reasonable amount of
time has passed will ask . . . "How you doing on reaching your goal?"
If we haven't made the effort, this is where the puckering and sweating
begins, 'cause now we're on the spot and the best thing to do is just Cowboy
Up, tell it straight, making no excuses. Most of the times, those folks who
call us on our stuff (sometimes called the Compassionate Kill); don't mean
to be critical or judgmental but are just asking if we got it done. Not that
it's important to them, only because we said it was important to us!
Just be careful your bragging and bluffing don't get in the way of walking
your talk.
