Volume 2, Number 16
Hello Friends! This past weekend, I just finished up the details of our Fall Issue of Better Horses Network. This marks the passing of the name, Checkerboard Corral that started seven years ago with a tri-fold going out to approximately 2000 horse folks. Electronic- Better Horses Network will replace the name of Electronic Checkerboard Corral beginning Sept. 4th. Today, our publication is mailed out 5 times per year and is mailed to over 21,000 area horse owners. Our electronic newsletter is distributed to over 7000 horse owners twice each month. Our radio show is aired across the country on eleven stations and is growing. Our educational events are going as strong as ever with over 18 Equine Health Fairs scheduled this fall.
We can still make room if you would like to join the Better Horses Network on a trip to our Research Farm in Gray Summit, Mo. We will be leaving from the Holiday Inn parking lot at noon on Monday, Aug.28 and return on Tuesday evening , Aug.29th. . We have around 50 area horse folks joining us on this great trip. Details are in the Calendar section of this newsletter, so give me a call if you would like to join us. Cost is $100 and covers bus trip, meals, and a night at the Holiday Inn near Gray Summit. Once you see what goes on at our Research Farm, you will see why “Research Makes The Difference”.
I did get some fishing is with our son Luke, his girlfriend, Jonel, and his two little brothers this weekend. We caught some fish and had a good time. Our six year old is really getting to develop his fish stories and reasons the fish got off.
If you are around the Topeka, Kansas area this weekend, don’t miss the Sunflower Slide put on by the Kansas Reining Horse Association, Aug.24-27th at the Expocentre. NRHA Classes begin Thursday night and run through Sunday. Saturday is Futurity Day, with $10,000 being added to the Open Futurity. If you get there by noon on Saturday, you will get to see a lot of action!
It was so exciting putting the fall issue together, because of all the area events, good articles, and equine news that is so plentiful. I have been with Purina Mills going on 29 years this fall, and my job is to sell feed. The beautiful thing about Better Horses Network is it adds so much more to the picture than just selling feed. It is about working together with you in “Raising Your Equine Experience To A Higher Level”. With our paper, electronic newsletter, radio and events, we have a great vehicle to work together to make sure we can take it to a higher level. Let me know what we can do to partner up with you.
Happy Trails!
Ernie

Horse Management Tip
Buyer Beware
By: Vicki Rhaesa
I have heard thousands of horror stories from first time horse buyers. I would like to offer some advice to anyone looking to purchase their first horse. Hopefully, these tips will keep you from falling into the “horror category” stories.
In today’s time, I truly feel that you get what you pay for. If you think you are getting the deal of a lifetime, you are probably going to be disappointed. I am not saying that they don’t exist, but it would be like finding a needle in a haystack. What most people don’t think about is that it costs just as much to take care of a good horse as it does a bad horse. The problem is that the good broke horse is going to be more expensive than the not so broke horse. One way or the other, you are going to be spending some money--whether it be up front on a little higher purchase price for a good horse or buy the less expensive one and spend additional money (month to month) for training on a young horse or older horse that has established behavioral issues. If you honestly cannot deal with either of these types of horses, then don’t buy them. These types of horses are less expensive for a reason. You will not be saving any money in the long run.
Take a knowledgeable and honest horse person with you if at all possible. There is usually a charge for this service, but money well spent. You probably wouldn’t buy a used car without taking someone that you knew and trusted with you that had a great deal of knowledge about what was under the hood.
No matter what level of riding experience you have – listen to your sixth sense. If the horse makes you feel uncomfortable – then there is probably a good reason for what you are feeling. Don’t ignore this feeling! Don’t ever assume anything about a horse -- no matter what age the horse is.
Owning a good horse can be a great experience. On the other hand, owning a not so good horse can be a total nightmare for anyone, especially for those first time horse owners. I have been in the horse industry for a lot of years and I have yet to hear a good first time horse owner story when the person did it alone.
Horsey Treat Recipe
Here's an easy to make "granola" treat for your special horse . . .
Horse Granola
2 cups oats
1 cup molasses
1/2 finely chopped apple
1/4 cup water
1 chopped carrot (optional)
First, mix everything together -- it should be sticky. Bake in oven at 425o
for about 10 minutes.
When time is up, leave the grain in the oven until the oven is cool. A
great horse granola treat!
