Volume 2, Number 7

Hello, friends!  Thank you for letting me share a picture of our first grandchild, Emma Ann Rodina. We really enjoyed having Nick and Megan up last week and getting a chance to see her. Emma, 9 days old, being held by her Uncle Matt. I wonder why she  looks so concerned???!!!

I hope all is going well. They are printing our Spring Edition this week so you should be receiving it soon.  I think you are going to really enjoy it.

There is still time to get in some riding with the “Ride Smart Clinics” with Craig Cameron coming up. We are pretty filled up on 23rd at the Saddle & Sirloin but have some room in the day clinic at the Rocking V Ranch near Topeka on April 20. Also we have some room in the day clinic on April 21st in Ellsworth. Make sure you look over the calendar for more information.

If you really want to have some fun, you need to consider being an Ambassador for the Flint Hills Rodeo that is being held June 2nd, 3rd & 4th in Strong City, KS.  The neat thing about being an Ambassador is you get to come and participate in the Dream Round-up at the Division Ranch on May 5th, 6th, & 7th near Strong City. It was one of the best times I ever had last year. Information about it is on page 26 in the coming Spring Edition. Give me a call (785) 418-6047 or e-mail me (ernie.rodina@agbusinessmail.net) if you have any questions.

Make sure you attend the 2nd Event of the Northeast Kansas Horse series. It is this Thursday in Tonganoxie, Kansas at the fairgrounds. Living legend, Dean Smith, a Multi-Champion Cutting Horse Trainer is going to share his “sound horsemanship” with the audience. If you need to find out any information about it, call Adam at Vet Vax, (913) 845-3760.

I am going to cut it short because I need to head to Medicine Lodge, Kansas to ride in the Dream Ride In The Gypsum Hills at the Gant-Larson Ranch.  I am really looking forward to it.  Let me know if I can be of help to you.

Happy Trails!

Ernie

Horse Management Tip

The Eyes Have It

Do you think of your horse as a member of your family? You are not alone. Horses bring out the nurturer in many of us. We hug on them. Bath and brush them. Give them treats and bundle them up when it’s cold. In fact, we would like to think that our horses love us, trust us and would never hurt us. But the truth is, he outweighs us by over 1,000 pounds and can severely injure us with a single kick. Sometimes we lose sight of that danger and of a fundamental fact:  he’s wired to behave and react like a horse, not a human.

One major difference between horses and humans is vision. The horse has mostly monocular vision, as he has an eye on each side of his head. Each eye works independently, sending images to separate sides of his brain as he searches for predators. Therefore, the horse’s peripheral vision is excellent. Only when he’s directing both eyes on an object in front of him do his eyes focus together for binocular vision, sending a single image to his brain. However, close up objects are somewhat blurry. He must move his head to focus on them, and this makes the object appear to move. No wonder, sometimes they seem to spook at nothing. So, keep in mind that what he sees is not what you see, and that his spook and run behavior is an equine response to what he might perceive as a threat to his survival.

Horsey Treat Recipe

Try this special Easter treat  for your favorite horse:

          Bunny Cookies

Ingredients:
Dry Mix
10 cups flour
1-2/3 cups instant non-fat dry milk
1/3 cup baking powder
2-1/2 tsp. salt
1-2/3 cups shortening
1 or 2 carrots, coarsely grated
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup sugar (optional)

Combine dry ingredients in a large Tupperware container that can be covered and refrigerated.  Add shortening and mix with a blender until mix looks like fine crumbs.  It will last 3 months in the fridge.  Take 3 cups Dry Mix, 1 or 2 carrots coarsely grated, 2/3 cup water, 1/4 cup sugar (optional).  Preheat oven to 425o.  Combine Dry Mix, carrots and sugar in large bowl; gradually add water to make dough soft, but not sticky.  Knead dough on a floured board about 15 times.  Divide roll in half and roll each section out flat, about 1/4 inch thick.  Cut with a bunny cookie cutter and bake about 10 mins. until lightly browned . . . a special Easter treat for a special horse!
