Fall seems as though it has finally arrived! I hope all of you have been getting along good. We have been busy putting on Equine Health Nights in the different areas and of course getting ready for our 6th Annual Dream Ride In The Flint Hills. The nice thing about holding these events in the fall, I get to see a lot of you again after seeing you last spring during our HOW meetings.

Let's welcome Cindy Foster to the Purina Team. Cindy and her husband live in Emporia, Kansas and has started to work with Purina on Sept.30. She will be working in the Spring Hill, KS, Emporia, KS, Grain Valley, MO. Areas along with helping me in the rest of the district. Welcome Aboard!

By the time you get this letter, our son Luke should be heading back to the United States from his Marine tour in Iraq. We are really looking forward to having him home. What a relief it was when he called and told me he finished his last mission and was heading home.

We just picked up another station for our radio show. KFRM, 550am, out of Clay Center and covers pretty much the Central and Southern parts of Kansas will now start airing our show on Saturday afternoons at 4:00. Make sure you tune in this week to listen to our interview with Jeremy Rose. Of course you know that Jeremy was the jockey who rode Afleet Alex and won the Preakness and Belmont this year. We are really excited about it. A complete schedule of our radio program is in this newsletter.

Be watching the schedule in this newsletter we have some great Equine Health Meetings scheduled for the Higginsville and Odessa markets. On October 25th Higginsville Feed will team up with the John Deere dealer and hold an Equine Health Night in Higginsville, MO. Also, plans are to hold an Equine Health Night on Nov. 8 for Missouri Feed & Tack in Odessa.

Since I talked to you last, I have scheduled Craig Cameron for the week of April 18 thru April 26 in the district. We hope to get an event somewhere close to you so you can attend.

I can continue to collect the proof on Purina Horse products. For those of you who feed our feed, we want to thank you. For those of you who might be feeding something else, we would like to show you “What The Checkerboard Can Do For You.” We would love to have you as our partner. Let us know what we can do.

Feeding Management Tip

Feed horses according to body weight. In order to feed the correct amount to a horse, the owner must know the horse's body weight. Many people look at their horse and estimate the body weight based on their own experience. However, research has proven that “eyeballing” to determine body weight is very inaccurate, even for experienced horse people.

To determine body weight most accurately, one should use a livestock scale. However, the Purina body weight tape is a handy and useful tool for determining a horse’s weight much more accurately than “eyeballing.” Our body weight tapes are based on data from continuing study since 1967 correlating heart girth and body weight measurements at our LongView Animal Nutrition Research Farm. Purina body weight tapes are available through your local Purina Dealer. To use the tape properly, the tape goes over the horse’s back just behind the withers, behind the front legs, and should be snug around the horse’s heartgirth. The end of the tape will fall in one or two boxed areas; read the two weights shown in the boxed areas on both sides of the tape, and the horse’s actual weight lies between the two weight and can be estimated accurately. (These directions are also printed directly on the body weight tapes.) Once the body weight is known, the amount of feed for that horse can be determined using feeding directions on the bag or tag, the feeding calculator on our website, or the Purina slipstick (see your local Purina Dealer).

Keep in mind that with most feeds the horse also needs at least 1-1.5% of its body weight (dry matter basis) of hay or grass (complete feeds with roughage included such as Equine Junior or Equine Senior are exceptions). If the horse is over- or underweight, the amounts fed should be adjusted appropriately from recommendations.
